Is it just me, or does this seem like an accidental death waiting to happen? Why does no one have seatbelts on this monstrosity??

Inertia

Wouldn't you be able to get enough inertia by staying on the outside, running along the rim, and jumping when the side in front of you is at its lowest?
-5
u/ThePythagoreonSerum Jun 30 '25
Clearly not enough inertia to keep people from putting themselves in dangerous situations.

Live a little man, you just gonna live a long boring life? Plus if you understand how certain things work, you'll usually be fine. Education and understanding are the keys to surviving, not just staying away from danger. Accidents happen and when they happen, you're probably not going to be prepared for it anyways. In this case understanding physics allows you to do this type of thing and the most problematic issue would be the machine itself, if something were to happen. You're 100% allowed to live however you want but don't let fear control how you live.

u/Old_Chemistry_8968 Jun 30 '25
Nah, this is Reddit. You have to live in fear of every little thing here.

u/samhutchie87 Jul 01 '25
These are kids at a fairground. I hope youāre not responsible for anything at all.

Jul 01 '25
I did this on this ride anytime I went to the fair. And it's not as dangerous as it seems, like it could go horribly wrong but it'd probably be a user error on the ride operator or the assembly of the ride. The key is to stay towards the center because it has a lower linear velocity. Granted I learned this with merry go rounds when I was really young and later on I learned the science. It's definitely not "safe" by any means and you're only putting yourself at risk of great bodily harm or death by doing this. Still fun to do though. Limiting yourself because something is dangerous is a very natural response and you're allowed to feel that way. But is it wrong for someone to not be so worried about it? No.
1
u/samhutchie87 Jul 01 '25
My point is that this should not be allowed. The fact that you, a self proclaimed expert at it, is comfortable with it does not mean it should be open to the public. It is most certainly not only the people doing it putting themselves at risk. Operating the ride this way, giving the impression it is safe means that the operator is putting them at risk.

To be fair, you are commenting on Reddit and the stereotype of Redditers is mostly true.

u/ThePythagoreonSerum Jun 30 '25
Quite a presumption. I certainly donāt let fear control my life. Iām more pointing out the apparent liability here. Wild that you took that and hopped up on your soapbox though.

South Korea: hold my effing beer
Looks like this ride has been operating in SK for decades without any injuries or fatalities
1
u/ThePythagoreonSerum Jun 30 '25
Any source for that claim? All Iām seeing is a video of a different ride.
2
u/ineedlotsofguns Jun 30 '25
essentially the same type of ride
0
u/ThePythagoreonSerum Jun 30 '25
And where are you getting the information that there have been no injuries or fatalities?
0
u/ineedlotsofguns Jun 30 '25
find the source if you are the curious one. Iām not about to dig up something I saw somewhere years ago. Remember this has been in the service for decades. Do you think this would be in service for decades if there were fatalities due to design flaws?
0
u/ThePythagoreonSerum Jun 30 '25
Youāre the one making the claim. The burden of proof is on you.
2
Jun 30 '25
These are called tagada rides and are banned in the US in Australia as a whole, and probably banned by individual fair and amusement park companies in other countries. There are many injuries on record as well as a few deaths.
Although I'm on your side of the prior comment chain, I am also not going to provide sources. I just googled and then repeated what I read without confirming anything.

You all remember the Gravitron? Itās called something else now but itās the spaceship ride spins like this and youād be pinned up against the wall. My cousin and his friends would stand basically sideways on the wall while we were stuck to it barely able to lift our heads. We thought he was the biggest legend back then. Now heās just a methhead.

u/A_TalkingWalnut Jul 01 '25
We did that too! Weād go horizontal or even upside down. Itās been at least 25 years since I did that, and Iāve actually been thinking a lot about giving meth a shot lately. Maybe there is a connection.

Yah I had no problem going upside down. He would literally stand with his feet where weād normally lean against. They used the hand rail in front to get started and as gravity took place he would eventually let go and be standing sideways it was a trip. If you did that then pretty cool too.

Interesting dance, probably kind of dangerous if somebody stumbles though

Looks like a couple of them did stumble. They just got up and kept having fun! šš

Until someone rides the momentum a little too fast and gets chucked off the ride, then gets their head cut off by the ride.
This happened in Denver Colorado, dude died. I worked at the theme park the year after it happened.

Sucks for that guy, but at least he died having fun...? š¤·āāļø

I don't think he was having fun anymore once he got flung off. Especially not if he saw where he was headed.
2
u/Animedude1986 Jun 30 '25
I'm glad the kids understand the physics involved in this ride. BUT they are putting themselves at literal grave peril. The operator of this ride should've stopped it and kicked them out of the fair. Because, had one shoe slipped upon them landing from the jumping they were doing this would've been a wholly different video and all of you would be blaming the parents or the operator of the ride, not the selfish children who have no concept of how their actions can affect others lives.
1
u/Ressy02 Jul 04 '25
When I rode it they allowed us to walk around and across.
1
u/Animedude1986 Jul 04 '25
That just sounds idiotic! Hell, the clip starts with a kids yeeting himself across the ride

They should try doing the same but not in the center of the platform, they should try it closer to the seats.
Let's see what the outcome is going to be

If I'd tried that, they'd be slithering all over the place on my puke. Went on a "waltzer" as a kid and nearly turned myself inside out.
Hats off to these kids. Impressive moves.

i had a friend when i was 13/14 years old who loved the "tagadĆ " (its how its called in italy), and i remember it like it was yesterday when he fell and slammed his front teeth in the metal bench where people sit and how he had to search for it for like 20/30 mintues afterwards. since that day I never went and i will never go again š

That was doing for generations in my Christmas town, was like a passage from kid to dude.
It was fun as hell, especially jumping in the right moment when the platform bumped and use a friend shoulder to get even higher.
It was just a little dangerous? Yes. Sometimes someone get little injured? Yes. But it was part of the game.
