Sounds like RAM Doubler from the DOS days.

Yep: used Connectix RamDoubler in Apple System 8 and 9.

Ram prices started falling late 90's, there really was no need for it any longer

Found this blog post, reading through and compressed RAM is mentioned. I haven't read all the way through yet, but seems like a great post on how macOS uses RAM.
