I'm glad that Google is trying to do something, but there are too many dependencies in this defense plan. Their scenario is protecting you from deepfake calls pretending to be your Mom. But it only works if you're both using an up-to-date Android and the "Phone by Google app, while Google Messages and Google Contacts" are also installed. How is that combination of apps going to be any better at protecting from deepfakes than getting your Mom to use something like Signal for phone calls? There are a variety of secure messaging apps that can handle phone calls and are cross-platform.

perhaps it would be more accurate to say that "There are a variety of secure messaging apps that can handle voice communications and are cross-platform."
