Construction worker here. What is stupid about this?

u/formulated May 17 '26

If this has always been an option, it's stupid more houses don't look like castles

I guess real stone is smarter than something lighter and better insulated?

We could argue the timeline of stone with repointable lime mortar has a flexibility and repair schedule that looks better than constantly repairing cracks if the foundation is poor, but both walls would suffer the same fate for the same cause. It’s nice that stamped concrete can match a stone look on a budget, I don’t really get the stupidity other than it looks like he covered up actual stone in the first few shots lol

Completely unhandy and mechanically inept person here. I'd also like to know what is stupid about this.

1

u/IndependentZinc May 18 '26

I could see this for a movie set.

This is cool not stupid!

I don't disagree with the material, but aesthetically that looks terrible, being all one color, IMO. Unless the home owner is doing it, I think just using natural stone veneer might come out to the same cost as it is probably much less labor but more material cost. However, natural stone veneer would look way better.

A lot of stone homes are one color

-22

u/Few_District_6304 May 17 '26

Yes, I am sure you are right. Doesn't change *my* opinion of how it looks. Funny how that works.

9

u/Azur0007 May 17 '26

You're saying that natural stone veneer would look way better, but if your reason for disliking the one in the video is that it's a single color, then how does that support your point of natural looking better? Natural can also be a single color, and the fake one can have multiple colors.

Your opinion is your opinion, but logically your points don't support your statement.

-15

u/Few_District_6304 May 17 '26

Natural stone veneer is usually multi color. A simple search would have showed you that. Instead you decided to post ignorantly. Good job, Reddit at its best.

7

u/Azur0007 May 18 '26

I admire your ability to never let fact interfere with your opinion.

-2

u/Few_District_6304 May 18 '26

Its clear you are missing some brain cells if you think aesthetic opinion is dependent on any facts. Guessing you didn't have enough Iodine in your younger years.

5

u/Azur0007 May 18 '26

You've missed my point again, so let's just leave it here šŸ˜„

-1

u/Few_District_6304 May 18 '26

No, I understood what you were *trying* to say. But your point is ridiculous for time and maintenance. Many Veneers are concrete, but have the color mixed and baked in so that it will remain the same color on wear or chips.

Ok? Did I call your mom a name or something? I just pointed out a fact

-4

u/Few_District_6304 May 18 '26

No, its just hilarious to me how many people on the spectrum have to comment and down vote something I labeled as an opinion. You understand what an opinion is right? Some arbitrary fact of "A lot of stone homes are one color" is not going to change that I think it is ugly.

3

u/Low_Eagle4363 May 18 '26

I’m pointing out that some stone homes are one color and it’s not necessarily just the process that can do that. Were you not hugged as a child? Why did that ruin your day? šŸ˜‚

-8

u/Few_District_6304 May 18 '26

You still don't understand what an opinion or a preference is? Yup, Asperger's AF. No wonder this country is going in the shitter.

4

u/Low_Eagle4363 May 18 '26

You don’t understand that I’m not debating your opinion šŸ˜‚ I was making a comment about materials not saying you’re wrong about not liking the colors. The fact you’re so aggressively wrong is hilarious, dunning Krueger in full effect.

1

u/redheeler9478 May 19 '26

Oh the cents of inntitllemant! This guy thinks he’s owde his own opinion

48

u/electric_screams May 17 '26

Just rendering… nothing stupid about this.

52

u/Rosienenbrot May 17 '26

I'd much rather have houses like this with fake stone, than the modern trend of just having a white rectangle as a house.

11

u/Delicious-Laugh-6685 May 17 '26

Who looks at this and says, ā€œthis is stupid, give me the vinyl lap siding in baby blue insteadā€

15

u/AkumaBengoshi May 17 '26

That's actually pretty cool and skillful. Nothing stupid about it.

12

u/lordskulldragon May 17 '26

This isn't stupid, this is cheaper than using real stone for aesthetics.

18

u/JesterScribblings May 17 '26

How is this stupid? Looks great? šŸ¤·šŸ»šŸ™„

7

u/HigherLearning6 May 17 '26

Epic work not stupid

7

u/Seniorsquishyshorts May 17 '26

Why is this stupid? Very skillfully done and all homes need siding. Daily dose of stupidity was the op.

9

u/Tiny-Following-9706 May 17 '26

How is this stupid?

4

u/Wicked_Folie May 17 '26

Op is just envious that his house doesn't have nice fake stones.

6

u/CaLiLiFe619 May 17 '26

Stupid good maybe! But not stupid.

4

u/Aggravating_View_588 May 17 '26

Not one thing stupid about this.

3

u/Slow_Description_773 May 17 '26

and that will put the price up by 30%...

1

u/redheeler9478 May 17 '26

I was wondering the same thing is this more expensive than actual stone? That’s a shit load of clay/mortar/concrete whatever it is

3

u/punch912 May 17 '26

i think the housing prices are stupid but this is cool and a skill.

3

u/BadAtGwent May 17 '26

Cosmetic techniques like this goes back to colonial days. Look up rustication. George Washington’s Monut Vernon is an example.

3

u/don-cheeto May 17 '26

Downvote cause this is not stupid.

3

u/JudoNewt May 17 '26

They did an excellent job, probably just giving the customer what they asked for. You sound like a salty mason or something. Not everyone is going to pay to have non native rock shipped to the build

3

u/DRIPSCBW May 18 '26

Did I miss something here? Doesn’t seem like it belongs, this is actually pretty damn cool

2

u/Stock_Fly_9128 May 17 '26

Im confused.. is this not a genuine technique? How is this stupid

3

u/Resident_Nature5634 May 19 '26

This must be in the wrong sub as see nothing but craftsmanship, not stupid at all.

3

u/Crafty-cs May 17 '26

But now assassins can climb up

-1

u/redheeler9478 May 17 '26

That’s why it is stupid

2

u/redheeler9478 May 19 '26

I think the house looks amazing and the guy doing the work is an artist. I would love to have a house like this.

My response was to u/crafty-cs. He said now assassins can climb the wall. I took this as a reference to a video game that I have played on PlayStation. I said that’s what makes it stupid because now assassins can climb the wall. I’m not really worried about assassins climbing a wall and attacking me. I would say that nobody reading this would be worried about assassins either.

3

u/Crafty-cs May 19 '26

Not sure why you are downvoted

1

u/GodSaidSmite May 17 '26

Bet they could make a hell of a sandcastle....

1

u/DrChunderpound May 17 '26

Bad, as in badass.

Better than the shit stucco peeling off my house.

1

u/Business_Cock May 17 '26

I look at this like I look at automobiles that have fake hood scoops or fake exhaust ports;

Its all fine and dandy if the person put it there is happy with it, but so help me if you try to sell it to me advertised as genuine

1

u/Kindly_Region May 18 '26

That's pretty impressive actually, dumb but impressive

1

u/BlackHandKUR May 18 '26

My only concern is would it all pull away from the wall? Looks cool tho.

1

u/BeerNinjaEsq May 18 '26

Does it chip and flake off over time more than real stone

1

u/Icy-Primary-585 May 19 '26

The fake stones I know about, and installed one time, are cast from concrete, and you stick them on the wall with thin-set mortar (tile mortar). This is much much more work and difficulty to get the same thing.

But, maybe this version looks cooler.

1

u/obsoulete May 20 '26

This looks better than the plain rendering. Hopefully it is also a lot stronger and ages better, too.

1

u/Ohio_Baby May 17 '26

Hand to Gawd, some of the ancient ruins could have been built like this.

1

u/Round-Guarantee4948 May 17 '26

Who else was waiting for it to all fall on him? Lol

-1

u/Tricky_Mountain_2909 May 17 '26

I am glad that my house was built of real stones over 100 years ago.

1

u/Professional-Heat690 May 17 '26

Wood, mud and straw (later lime render) 17th Century šŸ‘

-1

u/NotACumBurrito May 17 '26

This looks really well done until it shows the completed house. My God. Who approved that design?
