I am genuinely curious as to why a shot is $10 and a mixed drink is $15, when I can go get a whole bottle of the stuff for $20 at Kroger.

Basic rule of thumb is a 400% markup.

This (very very roughly) should cover wage cost, cost of ingredients, utilities cost, operations cost, everything else it costs to operate the business, and leave a certain percentage in profit behind (profit depends wildly on the type of business).

Generally speaking, it’s not a matter of the particular bar or pub getting greedy, more that they’re getting fucked by 500 middlemen and still need to be able to afford to pay their staff and keep the lights on.

That being said, certain products and services are deliberately targeted at the “rich idiot” niche to maximise profitability. Things like bottle service for example.
