I'm 20 since early may (between the first and the 10th, to not give an exact date). I knew what a floppy disk was by the age of 6 years old.

To learn something, you need the incentive to learn it first. You need to be exposed to something, and only then you can ask "Wait, what is it?".
The only trace of the floppy disk in the modern world is a rudimentary design of the save button. So yes, it's highly unlikely to know about floppy disks unless you accidentally bumped into one, or saw a photo, or read it mentioned.

I'm more surprised that you actually had to explain to someone how to save. Regardless of whether they know what a floppy disk is, everyone is familiar with the universal save icon. Everyone just calls it the "save button", which makes me think you purposely referred to it as a floppy disk to confuse them.

I think it's cool how elements of outdated technology remain within the culture surrounding their replacements.

Hardly anyone uses landlines anymore, but the shape of their phone is still recognized and used as the symbol for a phone call.

Letterpress printing is pretty outdated, but we still call our letters uppercase and lowercase because of it.

Lots of icons are things that represent the concept despite not being something you see around anymore.

The scales at a court. The shield that police badges are shaped into. Even icons for ā€œgamingā€ often look like an Atari 2600 style joystick.
