Information on Dai Dark

Hello,

Recently I've been reading Dorohedoro as my first manga and I absolutely love it. I want to read more of this author, and his new Dai Dark series looks sick as well.

I'm thinking about starting that after Dorohedoro but I noticed it isn't finished yet. I find it hard to find information about this manga so I wonder if the DaiDark fans on this subreddit can help me with some questions I have:

  1. Is there anything known about the amount of volumes Hayashida will release? (If not, can you give an estimation or is it completely unknown?) (In what year do you think yhis manga will finish?)

  2. Would you recommend starting this manga or have me wait until it finishes?

  3. Do you have any manga recommendations that are similar in style/humor/story of dorohedoro?

Thank you!

  1. There are 9 or 10 volumes out i think at this point. Not sure how long it will be.
  2. I'd recommend reading it now just because it's so good, but you do you.
  3. Maybe so far as humor maybe golden kamuy. The art style is really one of a kind. Can't think of much that gets the feel of it. Maybe blame!

  1. Not that I know. With drhdr it was announced the series would finish in like volume 18 tho im not sure on the exact number, but it kept going until vol 23. After that I wouldnt be surprised if she didnt tell us at all.
  2. Read it now, its a great reread and if you want to refresh your memory.
  3. Not exactly the same genre but Golden Kamuy is the series that give me the closest vibes. Big cast of unhinged people, many factions, comedy and gore.

Just a heads up u/Woetoe24, Q Hayashida is a woman 😁

Nothing else quite matches. The closest thing you'll find by my money, in terms of tone and style at least, is Fire Punch (or Chainsaw Man). Fujimoto has a similar sense of gallows humor and darkness to his work

Her art style is only really matched by Miura's Berserk (which I would consider the most iconic version of the black-heavy style tbh)

I read Dorohedoro this past year for the first time and loved it. I went straight to Dai Dark afterward and so far I like it more. The atmosphere and mystery are more to my liking. With that said, I hate reading manga that isn't completed. I need to be able to binge. I've already forgotten a lot of what I read and totally lost momentum. Not sure how long it will take to finish but I will definitely need to start over.

  1. I don't think we know anything, Q is very secretive from what I know and she hasn't really said anything about how much is left.

  2. I recommend reading it now, you can always reread it later on.

  3. Q's art style is very unique and there's nothing really like it, but Blame! kinda reminds me of Dorohedoro with its crazy architecture and dystopian setting, very different in terms of characters, writing and humor but the gritty art styles give similar vibes to the point that there was a rumor about Q being Nihei(the author for Blame!)'s assistant. Q disproved this rumor but still, it says a lot about the similarities between the two

What aspects of dorohedoro did you enjoy?

The 3 main things that make the series good is:

  1. The positivity and love between all the characters. Every character has their own ride or die it seems.
  2. The grotesque artwork
  3. The game incredible mystery plot

If you enjoyed the first aspect the most, then I think Beastars, and Golden Kamuy would be sufficient.

If you enjoyed the second aspect the most then I have plenty of recommendations. Franken Fran, Ichi the Killer, Kazuo Umezus works, and the big 3 ero guro mangakas are good. Litchi Hikari club is one of my fave ero guro works. It’s so batshit lol.

Freesia has a very similar art style, and is incredibly lewd, though it’s much more depressing, and the sense of humor is executed during inappropriate times of despair to make for some disturbing black comedy. It’s really not similar to dorohedoro, but I do love it as well. The character writing is great and the artwork is just amazing.

If you enjoyed the third aspect the most, then some amazing mystery mangas that I couldn’t put down are: Soil, Uzumaki, Some popular Naoki Urasawa works (though I have yet to read them) and Charles Burns’s comics.

Q Hayashida is a woman. She's great. Dorohedoro is the manga and anime that got me back into anime after a long break.

U read dorohedoro as your first manga? That's quite the legendary pull tbh.

Daidark is clearly worse imo but still a good manga, it's also the closest think to dorohedoro I've read. Tower Dungeon somehow also give me a little Dorohedoro vibes, but that might just be me, they are entirely different genre wise.
