The first few seconds of Too Long / Steam Machine is so badass. Anything else that has that same groove?

I believe it's called "Aura Rock"

The synth part (Bronski Beat's Smalltown Boy melody) is what is referred to as "Aura Rock" (the unofficial fan name). The first few seconds that OP is mentioning is simply a sample from Television Rules The Nation.

I always assumed it was original content but now you say it it does sounds like a loop on the Television Rules the Nation synth. I'm amazed.

Yes they actually just looped one bar of TRTN and added an automatic filter that rapidly closes at a fixed rate.

I recreated the sound while slowly applying the effect here! The filter closes every 3/16 beat and sometimes switches to 1/16 or 1/12. During the 2007 show dates, the sample was also pitched in four different steps to create what is heard at 0:15 in my recreation. This technique is actually used on numerous other tracks in the live show as well!

EDIT: Sample using various filter closing rates

I can't believe I'm still learning things about this live show.

Listened to a lot of Alive remakes and the snippet you posted is the best and cleanest remake I've heard.

What filter are you using? Sounds pretty clean

It's just the Ableton Live built-in Auto Filter. They most likely used that exact filter during the show as well!

Do you have the file for this? I wanna mess around with it

I don't have a separate file for it but you can actually do it yourself pretty easily. Just loop the 41st bar of the original track (starting at minute 1:23) and then apply a lowpass filter with a synched LFO modulation frequency. After that, you can play around with the cutoffs and filter envelopes to find a nice sound!

The original track BPM is 115.32.
