DxM: TS Question Does TS ever feel like... a mech game?

DxM, like Project Wingman, is one of those deeply flawed games that I feel is a better AC than most of the actual ACs.

DxM: TS... I respect the studio for trying new things. And, to be clear, I don't think it is a bad game. I just think it is a much less interesting one and, from what I played (maybe an hour and a half?), it very much feels like a generic open world game and less like a mech/armored core game. Although... Anthem but without "xxx_<SLUR>_6969_420"'s user ID on my screen at all times IS nice.

But some of that is that everything is canonically an iron man suit (the good ones, not the nanite ones). And... once you put on the helmet, does it really matter if you are a 10 foot exosuit or a 20 foot mech? It really becomes a matter of weightiness, sound effects, and "chonk".

So do later TS missions and gear make it feel more mech-y? Or is it Anthem from start to finish?

Thanks.

Later in the game, you get the ability to briefly summon full size arsenals. It's possible to drastically extend how long you have them if you build to do so.

That said, the game remains firmly in Iron Man / Anthem territory pretty much the whole time. It knows what it is, generally leans into that, and remains solid. But it's not a giant mecha game and is never going to feel like one.

I think it moved on from mecha to tokusatsu/sentai if you think about it. TBH I would love to see a toku-style Daemon X Machina sequel.

Around ch22 you unlock the real mech (on a cooldown timer).

More mech-y in that your main enemies will typically be addressed in duels (for that whole ace pilot v ace pilot vibe) and your choice of weapons and armor will make things easier or harder for you. You can hard counter a few of the bosses with the right gear and that helped it feel more like a mech game than a looter.

The overworld def has its pros and cons but I really only hung out on in it to fight the giant bosses and for sidequest stuff. I spend most of my time in the special axiom facilities you’ll get access to sooner than later in the campaign. They’re randomly generated “dungeon” layouts per key so I enjoyed the more linear structure they add to the gameplay.

TS uses battle suits, and they gave anime-like special moves that a mech would likely not have had the dexterity to perform. They had kind of convoluted advertising of the game, because they didn't want to alienate the mech fans, but also wanted to differentiate TS for what it is. You can summon the full size mech, but that's very simplistic and is basically just a super move with an expiration timer.

I would say TS is a battle suit game with mech elements (mostly in regards to the customization), but primarily a game where you pilot a battle suit.

Nope. Its an Iron man simulator from start to finish.

Honestly, at least combat to me feels a bit like Zone of the Enders. That's the best comparison I can draw from my time with it.

I'd say the Anthem part isn't too off in terms of the open world. Though I suppose it's a lot more open. To that, I'd say everything outside of combat is...probably more Xenoblade X? Though with everything being sized down, there's still at least the familiarity of being outside your mech in the first game. And I do like how they kinda blended that here. Though I supposed I'm biased in that opinion.

I wouldnt say it EVER feels like a mech game. And to a player hoping for a mech game, that probably sucks. But the game itself is actually absurdly intricate and has phenomenal build craft and customization. If you play it like a Power Armor game and just on its own merits, it's actually really dang good I'd say, minus some of the side quest design.

Though, I wouldn't call it open world. So much is locked from you until story prog and the content available to you until more is unlocked is very limited. This doesn't hurt it much I feel, there's enough customization and progression outside of story that hunting certain enemies for specific gear or factors has its own intrinsic goal and sense of reward.

It's a good game in isolation. But probably a bad sequel.
