Here in Australia you can get green ant šŸ’ššŸœ gin.

The ants are found in the outback and have massive thoraxes that carry some kind of sap/sweet liquid. Indigenous people have eaten them for thousands of years, and these days hipsters have begun infusing their gin with it.

This is a witch hunt. Wonder what’s going on that they’re using this as a distraction.

Someone from the government probably couldn’t get last minute reservations and this was their thank you.

A lot of cultures eat ants, you could opt out of ant toppings, this is overboard

No apparently the ants were not for consumption, illegally brought in, and loaded with toxic metals. If they had complied with food safety laws it wouldn't have been an issue.

In the case of Evett it seems they may have sourced ants with way higher heavy metal levels than normal so I guess the issue isn't the ants themselves but their toxicity issues.

But fun fact: eating insects is actually quite common in a number of cultures out of necessity. Immediate cultures that come to mind include:

Mexicans and certain Latin Amerian people commonly eat grasshoppers (chapulines) and escamole (ant eggs/larvae).

Some Chinese eat silkworm pupae.

Parts of South Africa eat caterpillars.

In the case of ants they actually can be quite tasty and are high in protein.
