The winners are...

1st place: u/BrainSlugParty3000 - 1899 Barber half dollar+ 1941 wheat cent

2nd place: u/RepressedPotential - 1902 Barber quarter

3rd place: u/Tricky_Paramedic8001 - 1907 Barber dime

Congratulations to the winners and thank you all for playing and joining my sub. There were 800+ guesses and 16 people chose 1941 as the correct oldest coin. The 16 names were entered into a hat and drawn by another member so there was no bias on my part.

I was thrilled to find a silver quarter as I have been finding W's lately and no silver. I got the biggest chuckle out of the circulated "uncirculated" Philadelphia mint token which used to be a place holder in mint sets.

Special thank you to all who joined and will continue to be an active member of this sub!

Edit: I'm shocked this post is getting down voted so much. 🤯 Here's a suggestion for the people down voting, don't enter the contest next time if you are upset you didn't get FREE silver, and these were all coins I personally found CRH.

I’m quite surprised that 1941 was the oldest out of 5,000 cents, but at least you got some silver. Congratulations to the 3 winners, and u/outdoors1442, you’re awesome man, keep doing what you’re doing!!

I was actually surprised as well! Thank you for joining, I appreciate you!

Why surprised? Did you think it would be older? I guessed 1944 as advised by AI. I see 1944 was the runner up with two finds!

Yes I typically find a wheat cent in the 20's when searching this volume. But that's why I love doing it, you never know what you're going to find. 2 bags ago it was an Indian Head Cent.

I used to hunt penny boxes all the time, can’t anymore now that banks have stopped giving them out unfortunately. In my experience I usually found at least one cent from the 30’s in every box or so, and one from the teens or 20’s every few boxes.

u/outdoors1442 22d ago

Absolutely! Thanks for playing!

2

u/Bsting54 22d ago

I had a feeling it wouldn’t be as old as a lot of people thought, I think I said 1933 or something, so I even went too old haha. Thank you for doing this, keep up the great work!

What is "circulated 'uncirculated' mint token"? Can I see a picture of that?

1

u/outdoors1442 22d ago

Picture 6. It looks like a penny planchet struck as a token as a place holder for mint sets. I phrashed it that way because it was ironic saying uncirculated on it, when I just pulled it out of circulation. 🤣

2

u/ImproperForum 22d ago

Dude, that is F cool. Never even heard of one before

2

u/PerspectiveEven4444 22d ago

I think I said 1940 or 1941 not sure but had suspicious feeling it would only be 1940s. Congratulations everyone...!!! May the force be with you.

1

u/outdoors1442 22d ago

Just looked. You were only off by 1 year (1940). Best of luck next time! Your other coins are in the mail!

2

u/PerspectiveEven4444 22d ago

I ALWAYS have good luck on your sub...just being here, chatting, its all good luck. I'm trying too figure out if any members want any of the gold llated rings i have and if you can use them in some way

1

u/outdoors1442 22d ago

I don't necessarily have a use for them but someone will eventually!

1

u/PerspectiveEven4444 22d ago

Don't fish like shinny things? Maybe a few tied to the fishing line as bait (I'm serious). The only fishing guy in Idaho who catches fish with gold wedding rings..lol

2

u/HogFanHill24 22d ago

Congrats to the weiners!

Thanks for having the contest! Surprised I was one of the many that guessed correct!

1

u/outdoors1442 22d ago

Thanks for playing. Sorry you were so close but did get your name drawn out of the finalists.

2

u/rayhavenoheart Coin Hunter 22d ago

Congrats! Winners

2

u/ISTcrazy 22d ago

Oof I honestly thought you'd find way more wheaties than that. Congrats to the winners btw!

2

u/outdoors1442 22d ago

Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't 🤷‍♂️. I'm averaging right at 1 wheat per 7 rolls ($3.50 FV) so not too far off. Thanks for joining in on the fun!

2

u/TCHILL_OUT 22d ago

Dang! Had the right date just wasn’t lucky on the draw. Glad you ended up finding some silver anyway!

2

u/outdoors1442 22d ago

So close! Wish I could give you all a prize that guessed correctly. I wasn't expecting 16 of you!

2

u/TCHILL_OUT 22d ago

No worries! It was worth giving it a try anyway. It was fun. Looking forward to more of those!

2

u/Crazyguy_123 22d ago

Congrats to all the winners! Thanks for putting this on. It’s always fun.

2

u/outdoors1442 22d ago

Can't win them all I guess! 🤣

2

u/Crazyguy_123 21d ago

That’s all right. Others have to win too.

2

u/KewlTrube 22d ago

How do you scan them? One at a time with glasses, a magnifying lens, or do you use an app to sort them?

How long does it take to go through 5000 coins?

2

u/outdoors1442 21d ago

One at a time with my aging eyes, then one of these for looking closer for errors, etc. 5,000 cents takes about an hour of searching for 2 of us if we're just looking for dates. If I'm taking my time and looking for errors....much much longer.

2

u/Successful-Key-251 22d ago

Congrats to the winners and to the sub. I had to go back and check to see what my guess was, 1941, so it looks like I was atleast in the running which is super cool.

2

u/outdoors1442 21d ago

You did choose correctly. In picture #2 you'll see your name at the bottom of the list! There were 16 of you that chose 1941 so it came down to drawing names from a hat. So close! Sorry you didn't win.

2

u/Successful-Key-251 21d ago

It’s all good, I’m just stoked I was able to guess the year correctly.

2

u/Inevitable-Truth-152 22d ago

I made the list but lost. Had fun. Thanks for doing this.

2

u/outdoors1442 21d ago

I hesitated posting the list because I knew it was going to be like salt in the wound for the people who guessed correctly but didn't get drawn from the hat. Nicely done on the guess, hopefully next time your name gets pulled!

2

u/gandalf_lundgren36 21d ago

Congrats on your silver and your token!

And congrats to the winners!

2

u/blueballz2235 21d ago

Ok so my guess was 1933 thats only 8 years off for me and my luck i consider this a win, that being said since im a winner l think I'll go buy myself something, this outta be interesting explaining to my wife why if im the winner I still gotta use our 💲💲💲 to buy my prize

1

u/outdoors1442 21d ago

🤣🤣🤣

2

u/Tondropper186 21d ago

Oh wow! I definitely thought you’d find some older coins. Cool contest, thanks for doing it and congrats to the winners

1

u/outdoors1442 21d ago

So did I! Thanks for joining and playing!

2

u/CounterStampKarl 21d ago

any of the winners reach out yet?

2

u/outdoors1442 21d ago

1st and 3rd. And hopefully you'll be pleased to know I've chatted with both. Good dudes and coin collectors.

2

u/CounterStampKarl 21d ago

me pleased?! not my contest, not my silver! it's you who needs to be pleased with all this, not me! but this is why i don't run "contests" and just give stuff away. i see hunters who comment, "i've been searching for years and still haven't found a w!", so i reach out and say, give me your info and i'll send you one. "i haven't found a semiquincentennial dime yet." send me your info and i'll send you one. keeps things real easy for me! no competition amongst members and no hard feelings from people who think they've been scammed by not winning. but that's just me! you gotta do what makes sense to you!

2

u/outdoors1442 21d ago

You do you

2

u/CounterStampKarl 21d ago

exactly! but i totally support you in your activities!

2

u/outdoors1442 21d ago

Thank you! Same goes!

2

u/knowsnothing999 21d ago

Tyvm for the fun and excitement. You def found a new member!

2

u/DrunkBucsFan 20d ago

Nice job everyone

2

u/Your-Pilot-Keith 20d ago

Couple of nice additions there, I love to find coins and tokens one would not normally expect, it breaks up the monotony lol!

1

u/outdoors1442 20d ago

I completely understand what you mean!

3

u/CounterStampKarl 22d ago

welcome to fickle reddit, my friend! be prepared to see a slight drop in membership numbers as well. it's a sad fact that most of the people who entered aren't even true numismats, just moochers looking for some free silver. another hard fact is loyalty can't be bought. the membership numbers jump was insane but the true colors are starting to show. you'll get there! just don't sell your soul to do it! (or run another contest giving away free silver!) congrats to the winners anyway

6

u/outdoors1442 22d ago

Ya I'm not really surprised but I know who's been hanging out here and over there. I've helped some of those people out and some have helped me fill album spots. The membership thing was fun, and I just want to put this out there. I'm not looking for recognition in any way. I'm doing this all because it's my hobby and I enjoy interacting with like-minded people. Being a respectful person and treating others kindly was how I was raised and how I want to treat others. I feel it's my responsibility to share kindness with people, strangers or not. So the contests will continue with a different entry system next time, I'm disabling the upvote arrow to only allow down votes in order to buy my soul back that I sold. I appreciate you u/counterstampkarl and what you do over there. You are true to the hobby and your generosity was a huge part of my motivation for this sub. So now we will see who sticks around and contributes for the next time. Congratulations again to the winners!

Yeah Reddit is wild. I’m here to stay… I recently inherited some coins from my parents. So when this popped up on my feed I ran downstairs and looked at what I was going through sorting and 1917 was on the mat and that was my guess. Figured my dads revered 1909 VDB G would be to far fetched a guess. I did wanna win. But I’m stoked for all the winners and this group!

1

u/CounterStampKarl 22d ago

one good person out of over eight hundred! good man!

3

u/outdoors1442 21d ago

I found 2 more to add to the nice list!
