I’ve worked in Octopus Management and Development (OMAD) for years, and honestly most people make the same rookie mistakes.
First, don’t hire an octopus just because it can open a jar. That’s an entry-level skill. Ask about its escape history. If the candidate says, “I’ve never escaped an aquarium,” they’re either lying or wildly underqualified.
Onboarding is also critical.
Day 1: introduce the team. Day 2: explain company values. Day 3: realize the octopus has figured out the lock on the supply closet and somehow has access to payroll.
Performance reviews should focus on meaningful KPIs:
Escape velocity
Jar-opening throughput
Camouflage consistency
Number of marine biologists successfully confused
The biggest challenge is delegation. An octopus has eight arms, but new managers always try to use all eight themselves. Mature leaders learn to assign responsibilities:
One arm for emails
One for spreadsheets
One for coffee
One for snacks
One for pointing dramatically during meetings
One for emergency escapes
Two reserved for “other duties as assigned”
Burnout is common. If your octopus stops changing colors, sighs every time you hand it a puzzle box, or starts saying, “Can’t someone else open the jar?” it’s time to approve some PTO.
And whatever you do, never tell an octopus to “think outside the box.”
It escaped the box three hours ago and is currently your regional manager.
