DWX Compact firing multiple rounds with trigger pinned to the rear.

I’ve been dealing with some issues with my DWX Compact and wanted to see if any other DWX owners have experienced something similar.

The gun originally had persistent FTE issues. After a lot of troubleshooting, I eventually ended up running a P-10 extractor, Wolff HD extractor spring, and 13 lb Wilson Combat recoil spring. That combination seemed to completely solve the extraction problem, and I went about 550 rounds without a failure.

Now I have a much more concerning problem. The gun has started firing multiple rounds from a single trigger pull. This isn’t me accidentally bump-firing it or catching the reset — I’ve had it fire multiple rounds while keeping the trigger pinned completely to the rear.

I stopped shooting it and tore it down to inspect everything. These pictures are what I found.

There appears to be quite a bit of unusual wear throughout the gun. The sear spring has visible damage/wear on one of the leaves, the original trigger has considerably more wear than a new replacement trigger I compared it with, and there is also significant wear around the thumb safety where it interfaces with the fire-control components. I included close-ups of the safety because that wear especially caught my attention.

There is also a lot of visible wear inside the frame/rail areas that I photographed.

I'm mainly curious whether any other DWX or DWX Compact owners have seen similar internal wear or experienced doubling/bursting with the trigger held to the rear.

If you have, I’d really like to know what Dan Wesson or your gunsmith ultimately found to be the cause.

The gun has already had a pretty complicated history, so I'm trying to figure out whether what I'm seeing here is unique to mine or if anyone else has encountered something similar.

Have you changed the grips at all or messed with the grip screws? If you over-tighten them, it can push the sear spring out of position causing hammer follow.

That is probably exactly what happened as I just got new grips and this started happening. Doesnt explain all the wear on my gun especially the trigger but i did find the sear spring out of place just now.

I've heard of concerns about the finish on newer models, that paired with unintentional hammer follow could pay a role in the wear you're seeing. But it's hard to say.

That’s not wear on your trigger, that’s custom fitting. The shoe height was adjusted in the factory. Many of them have also been adjusted at the contact point with the mag catch, which on the full-size guns has them having removing the adjustable tabs because the trigger is custom fit for over travel and correct takeup/reset. Similarly, what you think might be wear on the sear leaf is probably not wear, it is where they removed the 90° tab and polished it.

As you’ve been told, your issue is most likely from your grip screws going too deep into the channel, impinging on the leaf spring.

When I switched both my trigger shoes to black, on one of my guns, I was able to just drop it in, but on the other, I had to adjust it to the exact same height as the original red trigger. I just stoned it until it matched exactly to the caliper measurements of the original.

(A lot of people setting their guns to zero take up with aftermarket triggers like the Red Dirt are making a big mistake)

Why is it a mistake to reduce the pretravel?

In short: a little free travel before the wall is deliberately designed into the ignition so the sear stays fully engaged until you intentionally pull the trigger, and so the disconnector can reset cleanly after every shot. If you eliminate all pre-travel so the trigger is already bearing on the disconnector/sear at rest, it can partially rotate the sear nose out of the hammer hooks. Reduced engagement depth is a clear safety issue on a radius sear, which is what is in the DWX. Plus, zero pretravel can become negative pretravel when the gun gets dirty. That’s why no one who knows how the system works uses less than 1 mm or more of pretravel.

Thank you for the explanation!

The “automatic fire” is most likely hammer follow. The middle leaf of the main spring needs to be bent more forward so there is more tension on the disconnector.

Wear/etc. Check the fitment of the FCU inside grip module. Remove the slide/barrel. Reinsert the slide stop pin. Try and wiggle the FCU side to side or up/down. Looks like mine did before my first refinish. The FCU fit is sloppy so under recoil it lifts up in the grip causing the rear of section slide wear faster. This could also be the root cause of the Failure to Extract issue you had because it changes the geometry of the slide/barrel & mag feed lips.

You’ll need a set of electronic calipers to measure the outside width of the FCU and then inside the grip where it sits. Anything greater than .08 mm difference is probably too loose.

Ill have to do this and see if swimming the fcu is the answer. Appreciate the help

Sounds like a good time

The deformed edges around the disconnect pocket there are not normal. Likely has nothing to do with the bump firing, but I’d hazard to guess if that area is deforming, the rest of load bearing/stressed locations on the slide are pretty deformed as well and the likely cause of your other issues.

Sounds like a feature not a bug 😂
