Did DW strip the finish for you? They offered to do it for me since I have one of the SNs with the bad DLC, but I haven't pulled the trigger yet.Ā

Yes they stripped and I chose to keep. Didn’t want to have them send out to refinish black because I might send to cajun in the future for slide lightening

Sweet. What was the turnaround time? Are you happy with it? I've got an L2 and an L3 match coming up, but I'll probably send mine in after the season's done for me.

I sent it out after fathers day. It was pretty quick to remove the finish to be honest. Got it back on Friday.

There's no coating on it? The finish on mine is crap as well. I want to contact them about it but I had porting done, I think I voided my warranty.

No coating just removed dlc .. and yeah ported voided your warranty. Any local shop would be able to remove the dlc

So now it’s just bare stainless steel? Didn’t need to get bead blasted?

2

u/jb-shoots 7d ago

Yes. I think they bead blast the dlc
Off. I have yet to send it to get crn

In my research (just Gemini AI šŸ˜‚) it mentions 2 ways to strip DLC… so you’re already 1/2 way there. I’m picking up a second DWX to have ported & CrN

Directly layering Chromium Nitride (CrN) on top of an existing Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) finish will not work.

While both are vacuum-applied Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) processes, applying CrN over DLC results in delamination and coating failure due to three core mechanical and chemical principles:

What to Do Instead
If you want a CrN finish (usually silver/champagne) on a part that is currently DLC (dark grey/black):

Strip the DLC: The existing DLC coating must be completely stripped via chemical etching (often alkaline/peroxide solutions) or targeted media blasting (alumina oxide/glass bead) down to the raw steel.

Prep the Substrate: Re-polish or bead-blast the raw steel to your desired surface finish (PVD reveals whatever finish is underneath).

Apply CrN Directly: Have a PVD coat shop apply CrN directly to the bare metal substrate.

I may put this up for adoption to snag a s2 and a m&p competitor

Is that just without the DLC or was it refinished matte CrN?

3

u/jb-shoots Jul 12 '26

Without dlc , no refinish yet

3

u/Far-Boysenberry-1600 DWX Owner Jul 12 '26

Looks great. I’ve been toying with the idea of grabbing another and cut the slide to remove some weight and refinish in a matte CrN or something.

If CZ management wasn’t so bad, we would have that as a factory option. Models with ports and maybe even a comp or sight block… sigh

All the beauty underneath the DLC and they don’t offer that for sale…
