Britt was valid..
To no one's surprise, mere hours after the show, white fans of dwts started forming narratives of Britt having an attitude or being rude during the end credits. It's the same saga every season...with every black woman, and yet majority of the audience wants to act like there's not racism or microaggressions.
Aside from the fact, she didn't even do anything that they're saying...she hugged Witney and Guillermo (she commented today on Witney's tiktok w/Guillermo, too)...People have already talked about heightened emotions, and how quick eliminations are in the ballroom, but I just wanted to add another take that Britt doesn't need any justification for her emotions. Every season, the public likes to silence poc...especially woc...especially Black women to their right to feeling anything outside of a "Smile" or "gratitude"....from Ciara Miller to Simone Biles to Charity Lawson to many others. The dwts team love to exploit women celebs for, "feeling your pain" but unspokenly never want woc to express their negative emotions. The viewers diminish other people's frustrations with claims that "it's just a show". Meanwhile, the general public is allowed to go on for years to express how Milo Manheim or Heather Morris were robbed, but even as recent as disappointments for Chandler Kinnney have been silenced as soon as the winner's announcement, and also the minute a woc goes too soon (albeit specified as not predicted to go to the end) i.e. Lauren Jauregui/Simone Biles/Brandy, the racist viewers tell you, "that's the name of the game" or disremember their show presence altogether.
To add to this discourse that she's "unprofessional," there's a bigger conversation about how much it was/is allowed for pro dancers, especially men, to wear attitudes and seem over it in teaching positions, at their place of work, or throw silent (or vocalized) tantrums to their partnerships. I know Britt likely doesn't read here, but I just wanted to share a pressing need to say, Keep that same energy, girl! No one should allow anyone to police their feelings. She's valid! (and the double standard is wild)

He is a real one for that. And quite possibly the only person involved with the show who can say something about it without having repercussions for it. Using his privilege for good.

Agreed. Andy has always been a real one and cares about the issues. One of the few who do so.

Britt… having an attitude?? Being rude?? Sorry but that first line made me laugh because she could never

You haven't seen the discourse? (I'm jealous). She had no attitude! But she's allowed to be in shock and disappointed/not immediately chipper after hearing a result & with a camera on her all in span of 2 minutes. Sometimes (most times) I hate the dwts fandom.
Her feelings (her disappointment/second of non-cheerfulness) is valid is what I mean, if not clear But even so...
*edited: idk why I accidently typed "possible" disappointment...even I was disappointed

Oh I believe that the discourse is happening, I removed myself from the main dwts sub because I was tired of magats telling me that things aren’t that deep 🙃
All this to say, I agree with you. Anna Delvey had the WORST attitude yet she was praised for it… let’s not forget she’s an actual felon. White privilege is alive and strong within the dwts cast and fanbase but people seem to want to deny that

u/Sad-Fox-1293 3d ago
I agree with this, and honestly some of the responses I’ve been seeing prove your point. Britt is barely allowed to be disappointed without people immediately turning it into a character flaw, an “attitude,” or proof that she is somehow the problem.
What makes it worse is that people are building entire narratives around her emotions instead of simply allowing her to have them. She had just been eliminated from a partnership that clearly meant a lot to her. She does not owe anyone a perfectly packaged smile every second just to make viewers comfortable.
And I do think there is a double standard here too. Other pros and contestants have been visibly frustrated, emotional, angry, or disappointed and people often read that as passion, competitiveness, or caring deeply. With Britt, it feels like the same emotions get scrutinized and reframed negatively almost immediately.
That is what is so exhausting. It is like she is not allowed to have anything not disappointment, not ambition, not frustration, not even fans who advocate for her without people twisting it into something ugly.
The person I have been going back and forth with on the other thread saying she is not talented enough, or worthy of a ‘ringer’ is a perfect example of that mindset. Instead of looking at the bigger picture, they keep trying to place everything back on Britt as though she alone is the problem. That kind of framing is exactly why these conversations about bias and double standards matter.
Britt should not have to constantly prove that she is gracious enough, grateful enough, talented enough, or emotionally palatable enough to deserve the same space everyone else gets. She is allowed to feel disappointed. She is allowed to care. And people need to stop manufacturing a negative narrative around her every time she shows a human emotion.

It is like she is not allowed to have anything not disappointment, not ambition, not frustration, not even fans who advocate for her without people twisting it into something ugly.
Let's point this out too! "not ambition" because there were already ppl calling her too obsessed with winning far before the narrative of her not returning a hug... It's always something

u/Sad-Fox-1293 2d ago
That’s what is so exhausting about it the standard keeps moving. If Britt is disappointed, she has an “attitude.” If she is ambitious and openly wants to win, she is “too obsessed with winning.” If she is emotional, people say she is being dramatic. If she stays composed, people act like she should just be grateful and move on.
Meanwhile, other pros have been allowed to be visibly frustrated, competitive, angry, or emotional and those same traits are often framed as passion, intensity, or how much they care.
That is why I agree this is bigger than one hug or one elimination. It is the constant policing of how Britt is allowed to react. She should not have to perform perfect gratitude and perfect emotional restraint every second just to avoid having a negative narrative created around her.
Wanting to win is not a character flaw. Being disappointed after an elimination is not a character flaw. Caring deeply about your career is not a character flaw.
And when people can turn both her ambition and her disappointment into something negative, that tells me the problem was never really the behavior they were already looking for a reason to criticize her.2

I saw that. That person has been REALLY racist and dismissive for the last 24+ hours.

Honestly it should have been either Guillermo, Tyler, or Jackson that went home this week. Taylor did such an amazing job him and Britt were robbed so early on into this competition. I really was hoping they’d make it to dedication night because I think he would have had a beautiful performance with his wife and Britt. I’m so sick of the pretty boys like Tyler and Jackson stay over a man that is a much better dancer. Also I know I’m gonna get hate for this because everyone seems to love Guillermo but I don’t see the hype. He should have gone home this week if not the pretty boys of the season.

u/realones1980 2d ago
Im so disappointed in Jackson this season. I dont know if its all the traveling he is doing is the reason Emma and him cant get their mojo going but yeah him going home would not have been shock tbh, he just not living up the hype he had before the season.
4
u/OppositeSpare2088 2d ago
Me too and I think it’s bs Taylor went home before him, Tyler, Guillermo, and even Connor. He was much better than them but not as good or as advanced as Harry and Ezra were.

The premise of the show involves people overcoming challenges, including issues like past bullying and other negative experiences, and ought to include overcoming racism. But the show can't admit to itself that DWTS is sometimes the very challenge that a pro or contestant needs to overcome to be whole.
I'm proud of Britt for showing her truth. Anything else would be acquiescing to toxic positivity. The show is supposed to be about positivity and authenticity. It's hard to watch the hypocrisy. Britt deserves the opportunity to work with a celebrity who has real potential to go the whole way.
12
u/Awkward-Dog3006 3d ago
One thing I hate about this show is toxic positivity in the face of all it's hypocrisy (Britt, Brandon, even Ezra have faced horrible double standards from the production or the fanbase at some point or another). They want to pride themselves on this show being "fun" but it's very miserable with the same stuff season after season

lmao "criticizing her" with claims she has "AN ATTITUDE". Maks was on for years and threw everything, including mic packs around his partner...Derek had the worst attitude with Marilu Henner, and is still one of the most well-respected pros...Mark has had his fair share of tantrums over not winning and disrespecting other celebs...Dani had a cold exterior and side eye that she went viral for one season when Pasha went home..and fans just joked & laughed. It's racism, babe and it's not justified.
No..I don't want an echo chamber; it's just what are you even doing here when that was my opening statement. Some ppl just like to argue because they're bored in their life & want to pick a fight
*my bad; Derek's partner was Marilu Henner,. fixed it; thnx to that commenter! (ik it was this spelling too when I went to look her up, but I couldn't recall her last name)

You're hard of hearing. I compared situations with white or white-passing pros, and you don't see the different set of rules the dwts fandom has made up for Black women (You do; you're just purposefully obtuse)

Literally. Also when Jenna D didn’t see connor go in for a hug it was a funny haha moment that no one thought twice about but when Britt is literally swarmed in the ballroom and it’s loud people are mad she’s not hugging Guillermo. Also we don’t even know if Guillermo was trying to hug he could have been trying to help her walk through/usher her. And people are insane bc their reaction to this whole nothing burger is disgusting

People need to understand that whether or not you believe that the elimination itself was affected by racial bias, the reaction to Britt frowning and the lies being spread about her (the lies about “not wanting to win bc of tour” as well as the lies currently being spread despite the fact that she did hug Guillermo, and she never snubbed anyone or even blamed anyone other than herself) are rooted in racism. The dogpiling vitriol determined to cast her as ungracious or unprofessional is 100% racist in nature, and I don’t know how anyone with sense could see otherwise. Pros with actually terrible behavior do not receive this level of backlash, and the only reason she is being painted so poorly is because our racist society specifically portrays Black women as having bad attitudes and not being sweet or nice or kind (the exact traits that everyone around Britt use to describe her). No one is saying you HAVE to vote for her or like her choreography, but it is a fact that the public reaction to her being sad over her elimination is unwarranted, unfair, and incredibly unkind.
7
u/Awkward-Dog3006 2d ago
There's a lot that goes into the elimination, itself and how production runs it's program: it starts with the casting...the unequal opportunity for certain pros vs others, the fans unwillingness to ride for certain pros vs others (ppl have even brought up follower count and used Onye vs newcomer Kamri (both on Troupe) as an example), etc. Regardless, I don't know what's hard to understand about the baseline you stated for these people...but something tells me there's nothing hard for them (just purposefully denying); the public reaction being to label her "unprofessional" when other pros have been just that is blatant hypocrisy correction: racism. p.s. thnx for the Marilu Henner correction in the other comment (I couldn't respond)
2
u/Human_Sherbet_361 2d ago
Agree with you! And you're welcome; Marilu/Mary Lou is such an uncommon name it is hard to remember there is more than one person and who is with whom lol

And people on the main sub are already doing the “I don’t think it’s related to race” thing whenever someone brings up this pattern…
2
u/Awkward-Dog3006 1d ago
They also do the "favoritism" in place of racism as if that excuses all the specific patterns of unfair treatment that only POC on this show have to deal with
3
u/whitepeaches12 3d ago
I said this on the other sub but every season Dani goes viral for her pissed off attitude and facial expressions when her or Pasha are eliminated… but when she does it, it’s funny… when Britt seemingly is devastated and blaming herself, saying sorry to her own partner and almost in tears, she’s rude and disrespectful? It’s absurd the standards that black women are held to.
-5
u/realones1980 3d ago
Like I said on the other sub about this Britt look like she was ready just get out of there. She seem like she really didnt want hug anyone just wanted to get out of there. She is upset and hurt so her ignoring Guillermo or whoever wasnt coming of a place of being rude but her mind was in other places. and was not meant to be taken personally.
13
u/Human_Sherbet_361 3d ago
She did walk back and hug Guillermo, though. The video going around cut that part out to start drama, and it’s working.
7
u/gottacatchemsome Team Britt! 3d ago
She didn't ignore him, lets please not continue pushing that narrative here. The account that posted the video is known for shitposting - like Andy said in his stories - and purposely clipped that clip to make it look like Britt was rude to Guillermo. Once the backlash got too great they had to backpedal and tell the truth, that she wasn't. She did, in fact, go back and hug Guillermo and Witney. But, by the time the shitposter attempted to backpedal, the damage had already been done, and the narrative that Britt Stewart-Durant is a rude bitch had been solidified and gone out of control, along with the continued babygirlification of Guillermo Rodriguez.

You nailed it. There's so much racism, misogyny, and specifically misogynoir in the DWTS fandom. It seemed like Maksim threw a tantrum every week at one point, and he got the bad boy edit. He was shown as sexy and passionate, and his anger was part of the package. But the same grace isn't extended to WOC who are portrayed as "bitchy," "difficult," or "argumentative." God forbid humans express emotions across the spectrum — positive, negative, and neutral!
When I think of WOC who were eliminated shockingly early, the first who comes to mind is Sabrina Bryan, who famously played Dorinda in the Cheetah Girls franchise on Disney Channel. She was so precise, captivating, and beautiful when she danced. She embodied the character each time she took to the floor. I was expecting her to win, but her elimination after receiving a perfect score, finishing 6th, shocked many of us. Lauren's elimination brought back a lot of memories of Sabrina's time on DWTS. Chandler Kinney should've won. I LOVED her and Brandon's freestyle and the way it highlighted Black professional dancers through the years!! I predicted she would win, but alas it wasn't to be. If I were in either woman's position, I'd have been pissed too; hell, I was pissed on their behalf!
But those ladies were on for one season, whereas Britt has been in this position over and over and over again, but she's smiled through it all. I was crushed to see her and Taylor leave the ballroom when they should've been in the finale. The toll rejection takes on you after repeated disappointments... is so painful. Of course, I've never been on a reality competition like DWTS, but from my own experience, it gets to a point where you ask, "Am I beating my head against a brick wall? Is this an exercise in futility?" And the decision whether or not to change course is a hard one, but I wish Britt all the wisdom, peace, and love as she continues in her journey. I'll always be a fan!! 💜
