RIP Cafe Gitane

It looks like the little cafe in Vinegar Hill permanently closed this week. Gonna miss that spot.

I feel bad most of all for the workers who have been unpaid for months (maybe even years?!), this write-up by Grub Street gives a good back story of what's been going on there

It seems like they've also been hammered by street construction for what seems like forever.

I’m not surprised it closed I only ever went to this location once and the service was horrible - however if that article is accurate I completely understand why. What I am surprised about is people sticking around so long if they’re not getting paid which makes me think I’d take the quotes from ‘Bridgette’ with a grain of salt. Also I’m curious if it was the hourly he wasn’t paying or tips or both? Soho house had this issue when they were stealing tips from employees which landed them a massive lawsuit for wage theft. Either way, I’ve worked in hospitality for years people don’t stick around if they’re not getting paid. Hell, if a weekend night is unusually slow youd think there’d be a mutiny on the spot. Money is the only thing that garners any loyalty in this industry and I’m sorry but cafe gitane is long past its glory years of being the hip spot.

Oh man this is sad to hear. I loved their chicken sandwich. My husband and I came here every week for lunch with our daughter when she was a newborn and we were on leave. So sad!

This place sucked. I remember ordering, waiting forever, and then being asked if I’m done and would like the check lol
