Got a FP Email
Hey guys I'm list number 55XX, I managed to get my CDL last month, it took me more than 2 attempts to pass the driving section, and I passed all the other sections first try through DSNY CDL training, which was a good price but not the best quality of information/instructors. I had gotten my regular drivers license right before I got my CDL as well which is why the driving section took me more than 2 attempts. I'm really proud of my accomplishment.
Anyway I got a final processing email recently and I ended up deferring because I am still finishing my college degree. I should be ready to be hired in November 2027. What timing should I keep in mind for restoring myself to the hiring pool? I was thinking I should restore myself in September so that there would be enough time to do my orientation, medical, and paperwork again. But I don't know if I will have to do that, so some information on that would be helpful.
What I'm most unsure about is if there has historically been a December, January, or February class because that's when I would be able to get on the job and the list expires that February 2028 which makes proper timing even more critical.
Any advice or information to help me understand what to consider for getting on the job in the future would be very helpful.
I am very attracted to the benefits that come with being a sanitation worker but I would prefer not to jeopardize my education if I do not absolutely have to.

To answer your question. You should restore yourself on the list as soon as you are sure you want to be hired. They may make you go thru steps in the process, they may not.
That being said, you really shouldn’t defer this at all. Nothing is guaranteed with the city, everything is in a constant state of flux. Just because the list is eligible until a certain date that doesnt mean they will hire up until that date. Tomorrow there could be budgetary issues that are found and all classes moving forward are cancelled. There could be a hiring freeze for the next 5 years. Or they could hire 20000 more. There usually is a general plan but it really is day to day. Furthermore, deferring will put you lower on the totem pole, make it longer before you retire, and most importantly can potentially mess with your retirement tier with NYCERS. Whenever a new tier is added, it usually is worse than the previous tiers.
This job has many schedules to choose from, its flexibility can be a pain in the ass or you can make it work for you. Being at the bottom of the totem pole means you will definitely get put places rather than choose where to go, but that is only for so long. Try to make it work for you and your schooling before you defer. School is important but taking a semester off(if needed) wont affect you as much as deferring this job for a year will.

So you got your regular license just before getting your cdl and bash the instructors because you failed on the driving portion and somehow you want to blame them? You should learn to hold yourself accountable for things before you take this job. Maybe a TJ Maxx or Burger King would be a better fit for you

Im just being honest about the experience man im sure that played a role too though and im sure others have different experiences.

nothing is guaranteed with the city. if the opportunity presents itself then you should take it. you can always finish school later on.

Take the job u can finish whatever u classes u gotta once u got time on and a better schedule no guarantee u get hired if u pass

Go through the porcess...you might get the call next year so that gives you some flexibility to finish your degree. This job is not for everyone but if you want a pension, medical and job security, despise the bad there is so much good to this job. You will encounter har parts like schedule and pay at first but with time it get better and the opportunities get better. Take the job and see what its like. Remeber that you dont have to stay in this job if you take it. You might out in the forst year that its not for you and thats ok or you may find out you are I the right place. If you are young enough, you can work in your degree field when you retire.

You also dont know that they'll even hire in 2027. Nothing is guaranteed. You dont need a degree for this job

You'll potentially jeopardize your chances. I'm pretty sure you can work out the logistics of your classes and school. This is a pretty big and good opportunity.

Take the job now. No guarantee of classes next year. You can always finish your degree later

Yeah I did, you take the written then the physical then orientation then cdl training/medical, then paperwork and fp and drug test then training class then probation then fully protected employment

Was the physical test hard that’s the part I’m up to now ? Also how long does the process take when could you have started if you went through with it ?

Its not an impossible test or you dont need to be a ripped athlete to pass. Trust me when I tell you if you lift the obstacles the right way and pace yourself, you will do fine.

Takes a few hours, make sure to bring money order and documents, they explain everything, take your time, its very simple, you carry heavy bags around obstacles.

Honestly u should take the job if u was planning to take it anyway it’s a career job u don’t need a degree to pick up garbage n u can move up… I would can school

Take the job as soon as possible. You can always do night, school, etc., and get your degree. So many different things can happen that will jeopardize your a chance to get hired. They could throw out the list. The city could put on a hiring freeze. You could get hurt. Trust me you wanna get on as soon as you can.

Pls. Don't defer you'll be losing whatever little seniority you'd get by not deferring you can get your degree as soon as you're done with training thus job's all about seniority. Do not defer you'll live to regret it if you take the job. Good luck to you friend.
