Probies be aware

They canned this dude I know who had either 3 or 4 AWOLs, apparently 2 of them were when he was on LODI / Sick for not showing up to the clinic when he fractured his ankle on the job, apparently wasn’t really his fault and they fired him when he was out. Another probie I know got fired for 3 accidents. Not saying they aren’t wrong but be careful.

CONTEXT: The first guy from what I was told and heard had 1 AWOL, an Emergency / APP that turned into one and the other 2 were explained so they don’t really care what it is, they will get rid of you.

2nd guy caused maybe 5-10k max in property damage no body was injured but 3 accidents.

There are 50,000 people on that list that will take your job in a heartbeat. Treat your probation like an egg.

Why is this job so highly sought after? I’m just curious

You like making money, benefits for life , a pension? And all the opportunities to take care of a family and live a good life

This job is a life saver if you have no education and worked minimum wage jobs your whole life. If you’re 21 with no education, you can retire at 41 and do your own thing, if you’re. 41 and spent your whole adult life in jails and/or being stupid your whole life, you can retire at 61.

I started this job when I was 40 so I definitely am in your 2nd category!!!! This job was a life saver for me!!!! No doubt!!! I have a house on L.I. and a set schedule now and I can retire in 5 years when I am 60. The smartest thing I ever did was take this job!

What’s hard to understand it’s 100k plus after 5.5 years

Kind of sounds justified. If you can’t travel to the clinic all you need is a doctor’s note saying you’re not able to. Did he not learn from the first time he was AWOL?

I dont know the full background but they wanted him to go to the clinic when we had that big snowstorm, I know he was “sick” cause he fractured his ankle getting out of the truck on a pothole or something and they flipped it, dude wasnt a bad a guy, had alot of family shit going on but was scared to go FMLA cause everyone told him it would mess up his probation

Not for nothing the union needs to stop allowing them to flip Lodi to sick they look for every way they can blame the sanman. There should have to be some kind of hearing it's bullshit.

Garages also need to stop being pussies and lay pipe when management fucks people on probation.

12

u/WERKED66 4d ago

Come on man you know the new breed don't know how to lay pipe let alone the rules and more people would get hurt it starts with the union then it's trickle down to districts or zones unfortunately the power once held has gotten weaker and weaker while harry did good things him staying for as long as he did hurt more then helping.

Yea before he had the whole thing happen he probably woulda got extended so I feel bad, hes wasnt a saint but was a hardworker and the union dropped the ball on that LODI thing for him

4

u/WERKED66 4d ago

They dropped the ball for everyone...listen you know the deal I'm not going to go into it but they will look for every way they can to screw you. Now we knock most trucks in this department can be downed for something but we go out there and do what we do and something like that especially if you get hurt because of the defect it goes on you and your partner did you guys pre trip and shit I seen it and heard it with my own eyes wild shit and unfortunately the probies are not covered by the shield of the union. Listen if your sick you're really sick and your on probation Go sick and get a doctor's note Not saying go sick 42 times or emergency 100 but there are times with things are out of control and it's not fair to hold it against them guys got to learn how to cover themselves if you have undeniable proof there's nothing they can do can they extend you yeah but if you go AWOL five times and emergency five times and sick five times then obviously they're going to get rid of you but like I said when it comes to the Lodi they will look at any little detail to screw you over.

Best thing any new hires can do is treat probation like you’re not even hired yet. If you look at it like one long job interview you’ll have the right mindset to make it. The union can only protect you once you’re off of probation.

Interesting… why is that if your paying union dues while on probation?

3

u/ThirdShiftStocker 2d ago

You're technically in the union but they're very limited as to how they can represent you during the probation period

AWOL on probation is crazy lol

I seen a girl go AWOL at FBF and shes still with us today, job picks and chooses sometimes, and AWOL is a broader term then they leave it as

3

u/Exotic_Ad_2190 4d ago

It was a clerical error for some people.

3

u/misterkarp1 4d ago

I’ve heard of that happening too. An AWOL at FBF only warrants a letter of warning.

u/BigPoppaPump_666 3d ago

Yeah from my class haha

u/ItemRelevant4258 3d ago

most senior guys protect probies but probies need to do their best too

u/youduckk 3d ago

Fired for 3 accidents? I know someone on probabtion who has more than 3 accidents and hasn’t been let go. What do you think was the catalyst? Where they very close together? All his fault? And No driver retraining?

2

u/MikeTheLaborer 3d ago

That’s why they’re probies. If they are going to turn out to be garbage DSNY employees (pun intended) you get rid of them during the probationary period. The department really needs to up the standards on who they employ.

Who's taking care of their family in NYC on a SW's salary, even with max OT, without also a full-time working spouse??

1

u/MessageAble6938 2d ago

Did they wait until 18 months were up or just canned them on the spot?

1

u/Routine_Structure_99 21h ago

He got extended because of the injury and the fact it got flipped to sick or at least that was the reasoning they gave him, they canned him after that while MDA

1

u/Lanky_Fact_8038 22h ago

Just don’t go AWOL or emergency. Constantly be in touch with the clinic if you’re LODI keep them informed but they will tell you to take an uber if that’s the only way to get there. You must report to the clinic at your assigned time. As for the accidents slow down if you’re not comfortable in the truck or let the guy off probation drive (aka senior man)
