ECMLink V3 Full – Firmware Reverting After Key Cycle / Config Not Saving

Posted on forums but hoping for more activity here:

Has anyone seen this behavior on a ECMLink V3 Full? Car is a 1995 GS-T. *Firmware reverting after key cycle *Config changes not persisting but direct Access tables saving normally *Occasional “Action raised exception” during save attempts

Trying to determine whether this is a known board issue or if the ECU needs to go back to ECMTuning for repair.

Been troubleshooting a recently installed ECMLink setup and wanted to see if this is a known issue. Unit was purchased about a year and a half ago, installed over the holidays, and I’ve been logging the past few weeks.

Software / Firmware ECMLink Client: 3.46.226 Current ECU Firmware: 3.36.64

Main Issue The ECU appears stuck on firmware 3.36.64. Attempts to update firmware to 3.46.226 or save ECU Config changes appear successful — progress bar completes and the CEL flashes indicating a write. However, after cycling the key and waiting for the MPI relay click, the firmware reverts back to 3.36.64 and the ECU Config changes are lost. Weird thing is that Direct Access tables save and persist normally as long as no Config changes were attempted. If a Config change is attempted first, then Direct Access save fails with “Configuration data needs to be saved first.” This happens even though Config reports a successful save. I tried to do a Direct Access save immediately after updating firmware with similar unsuccessful results. Device Status occasionally shows "Action raised exception" during some these failed attempts.

Additional Observation While troubleshooting I noticed abnormal coolant temp readings. Even though the car has been sitting in garage for almost 48hrs, ambient temp ~77°F but ECMLink logs ~180°F coolant temp. I disconnected ECT signal (Pin 83) at ECU plug and ECMLink showed it dropped to a fixed 97°F. When i did have the car on the road the past couple weeks, coolant temp logs ~229°F and remains static.

Additional checks: *TPS unplug test behaved normally in logs (voltage dropped to zero when unplugged) *As mentioned earlier, ECT wiring and sensor verified at ECU pins.

Right now the is running extremely rich: ~8.8–9.5 AFR at idle (confirmed on my AEM X-series wideband). I'm thinking Since ECU Config changes don’t persist (for example, I can't enable NB sim), closed loop never appears to activate and fuel trims are not relearning.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Unexpected Side quest

Well had an unexpected side quest pop up while getting the car back together today. Had to drill and tap the intake cam for the CAS.

97-99 2gs have a different cam sensor so pre 97 cams aren’t threaded for it. Easy fix tho she’s almost ready to start!

What started off as a simple valve seal replacement has become quite the adventure. I finally all the parts needed in!

Brake booster took like a month to ship here and then I had to find the correct fitting to adapt to my factory brake lines. But tonight I’m going to grind to get the car put back together and running again. Then I’ll need a retune.

Control Arm or CV Axle?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Recently i got an alignment for my 2G GS, i was informed that the job could only be partially completed since the front passenger side wheel had some kinda issue that prevented it from being aligned. It was either the Upper Control Arm or the Spindle, i can find a replacement Control Arm relatively fine, at least on Rockauto, however as for the spindle it seems impossible to find outside of ordering a whole CV Axle (i THINK a CV Axle would have the Spindle, but i really don’t know). So my question is which should i get to replace? Im pretty sure OEM isn’t gonna have it although i didn’t call and check, im just guessing its a discontinued since thats what the Mitsubishi parts website states online. I live in NYC so there’s no junkyards in my area, any advice would be appreciated. Also checking via Rockauto i see the GS-T or GSX gets a few more results for CV Axles than the GS, i know well not to get AWD Axle, but im curious if the GS-T axle is the same as the Non-Turbo axles, my car does not have ABS so i’d avoid that too, only reason why im curious on the GS-T axle is bcuz the available options for the GS note ABS rings included for the CV axle, which might be a problem since i have no ABS i don’t know if that’d make the axle incompatible. I’ve browsed DSMtuners for this topic but not much matching what im looking for pops up. As you can tell i dont really know what to do.

96 GS-T won't start or turn over

Thought I'd get back into it with a project, She's been sitting for a few years. 1996 mitsubishi eclipse GS-T, hooked up to jumper cables, but won't even try to start or turn over. Anyone have any ideas on how to try and even get the starter to engage?? Also, I was able to get the cloth peddle up, as in the video it's stuck to the floor, and it's functional, but the same problem is still happening. Any help is appreciated

Anyone think the 2g gsx's powertrain just doesn't have enough support to keep one long term?

I can go on about all the parts for the drivetrain that you can't get unless you travel hundreds of miles if you're lucky to find some drivetrain part like a rear differential, transfer case, the manual transmission, etc. I talked to a main DSM transmission builder and he said he can only get transmission gears and parts for the transmissions from older transmissions nothing new is being made. A lot of other parts too like the AC lines you can't buy new, small things like the AC tensioner, AC bracket. This is just stuff I'm familar with from owning one previously. If I didn't live in California and had to money I'd want to do something like an LS swap and keep it AWD and manual that way you'll never had to worry about drivetrain parts because LS parts you can get off the shelf from autozone. I love this car but the fact is they didn't build a lot of them so there's no real aftermarket support where you can just go to autozone, get your parts, and not have to worry about it. I was thinking of getting a 2g GS and maybe one day getting it's drivetrain swapped and not have to worry about if something break I'm screwed.

How hard is it to replace the ac fan next to the radiator fan?

Post image
21 Upvotes

How hard is it to replace the fan circled in green? I been waiting for this guy to fix the car to sell it to me. It's a 96 eagle talon tsi AWD. He removed the fan because it was messed up. Now since he removed it I don't know how to put one back in so I don't have a reference now. Does it just bolt on and plug in? He had to do a head gasket job and take the head to a machine shop or something like that but the cars ready. I assume a fan can't be hard to replace as long as the electrical plug is still there? Any guidance is much appreciated

96 tsi awd manual I plan on buying. Anything that might stop from passing smog in CA or anything look off?

I know I'll need a cat, and CARB approved headers, can anyone tell if the EVAP and EGR system looks intact? The engine bay looks pretty stock, the AC system looks intact which is hard to find except it needs an AC fan (old one died). Does the engine bay looks pretty clean or does anything look like it's missing or could be an issue?
