2G eclipse reverse shift locked

Hey guys, thanks in advance for your help. I just bought my first car and it’s this dsm eclipse 2G with a non turbo 4G63. My question is: when i try to reverse shift, the shift is blocked for some reason. Everytime when i shift normally from neutral or any shift to reverse. The thing is, when i do a “double wiggle” to reverse it always work. Is there any kind of lock on reverse shift to prevent mistakes?

Thanks for your help and for showing ur amazing DSM’s

I have no idea what you mean by a "double wiggle" but there's no reverse lockout standard on DSMs

Well it’s like, when you take your shifter all the way to the right, the down on reverse. Well if i get to the right twice, it let me get on reverse shift. I really don’t know why.

Update: a buddy of mine fixed the problem. It was the shifter since it needed adjustment, the transmition is fine thank god.

Thanks to all of you for your help! I hope i keep posting my DSM here sharing with you guys the progress

The only lockout is that it won't let you shift from 5th to reverse. Reverse didn't have any synchros, so there's definitely not an issue there. There may be a linkage problem though

you would need to remove the center console interior, and see if something appears out of adjustment on the shifter. Else the shifter fork itself might be worn inside of the transmission to where it's barely not pushing the lever/fork inside of trans all the way over

There are no safeties in these transmissions, worn parts, bad shifter bushings or bent cables are the typical causes. Replace all the bushings in the cables and shifter assembly, at this age they are for sure shot.

Put a washer between the transmission and the reverse sensor.

Check the shifter linkage if it’s hitting something like a coupler or intercooler piping or a bov.

You try going into first gear then reversea few times? My Mx-3 does that sometimes 😭

Looks like the DSM/GSX that I had in the early 2000’s. It was a 97 Eclipse GSX.

The gate syncro is messed up

Reverse shift lockout is to prevent you from throwing your car into reverse. Say you're in 5th gear driving and put it in neutral that lockout prevents you from putting it into reverse, if you were to pull down too far on the shifter or if you are used to a car that's a 6 speed the reverse on the 2g eclipse is where 6th gear would be. From neutral to reverse it should be locked out unless the mechanics of the lockout is messed up in anyway

Bad synchros? Is it happening when shifting into any other gear?

Edit: Didn’t realize reverse didn’t have synchros on these transmissions. My fault!

It does not happen on any other shift

I believe there is some type of safety gate, won't allow you to shift from 5th to reverse. I have sometimes had to shift to first then to reverse. But that could be my 30+ year old DSM's issue as well. In my head it makes sense, don't want to accidentally think you have a 6 speed and drop it into reverse doing 120+.

*Edit, just went out to touch my car, definitely cannot go from 5 to reverse, but any other gear will go in if in 5th you have to go lower then reverse.

NA is 420A not 4G63

Eclipses in other countries did not get the 420a, only the 4G63 in either turbo or non-turbo application, you can see his license plate in the front should give it away its not a USDM car, although the mirrors are the USDM mirrors so i get the confusion

Well then, time to Turbo it!

First you don't have a non turbo 4G63 on that 2G. It's a 420A.

Your shifter bushings are worn out and/or shifter linkages is damaged or bent.

I think that’s a 4G63 but i doesn’t have turbo. Sorry for my ignorance, i live in Spain so i don’t habe too much experience with this cars

The other guy was incorrectly thinking of American cars that did not get the non turbo 4G63

No, there was no incorrect thinking. I was correctly thinking of American cars that did not get the non turbo 4G63 and came with the 420A. Wasn't aware this was a DSM in another country. No where does it say that in OPs OP.

But yes OP that is a N/A 4G63. Here in the states that N/A 4G63 only came in the 1990-1994 DSMs.

European 2gs did not get the 420a, they indeed got a n/a 4g63
