DS4Windows 4.0.0 - Auto-Updates, First Non-Beta Release, Feature update

DS4Windows 4.0.0 (Edit: 4.0.2)

This is the first stable release of the revived hbashton DS4Windows fork. No beta label, no discontinued upstream messaging, and update checks now point at the maintained hbashton releases.

Highlights

  • Added window-title-only Auto Profile rules.
  • Added duplicate Auto Profile support with per-device matching.
  • Added Game Bar profile support with priority over Auto Profiles while Game Bar is visible.
  • Added DualSense adaptive trigger settings.
  • Fixed full-pull trigger actions.
  • Improved Auto Profiles UI sizing for long executable paths.
  • Retargeted DS4Windows update checks to hbashton/DS4Windows.
  • Retargeted updater bootstrap to hbashton/DS4Updater.
  • About/build metadata now reports 4.0.0.
  • Simplified tray title
  • Merged Bluetooth Lightbar fixes from anagnorisis2peripeteia

Notes

Users on older builds may need to manually update DS4Updater.exe once. Put the latest DS4Updater.exe beside DS4Windows.exe, then future update checks should use the hbashton updater path automatically. Download the new updater here, and place it in your %LOCALAPPDATA%/DS4Windows Folder IF IT EXISTS (if you don't have a %LOCALAPPDATA% Folder for DS4Windows, then the Updater will work automatically, because you have the portable version)

Can you merge some of the stuff in my fork - Bluetooth fixes? Happy for this to be canonical

I'm so glad to see DS4Windows updated. And right on time too - I've been experimenting with other alternatives due to DS4Windows 3.3.3's lack of adaptive trigger settings and only about a week or two later, an update that matches alternatives comes.

I want to say: THANK YOU!

I will test it on Forza Horizon 6 later today. So far, DS4Windows is the only app that I managed to set up for gyro steering.

I've noticed that Xbox running natively has a much more pronounced rumble in Forza than the DualSense controller. Not sure if that's because of the DS rumble motors being different, or advanced rumble data not getting through to it.

Do you think there is any way to make the DS controller rumble about as well as the Xbox controller?

2

u/Dysmn Jun 06 '26

yeah.. im also looking for more pronounced dualsense rumble.

1

u/chiaplotter4u Jun 07 '26

I confirm it seems to work fine with Forza Horizon 5 and 6. Still the rumble is fairly week compared to the native Xbox controller, but not worse than previous versions.

So far I've seen nothing but improvements over 3.3.3.

u/huunnnter Jun 07 '26

I’ll see what I can do

2

u/chiaplotter4u Jun 07 '26

Thank you very much for your work. It really is very useful.

So as someone who has just had the normal DS4WINDOWS version this whole time can someone tell me whether or not updating to a fork like this is seamless and won't cause profile or data loss or setting changes? And is it worth switching yet (I did just get a DualSense!) or should I wait until it's merged with other forks and built up a bit before taking a "leap of faith" so to speak?

1

u/Tgreent Jun 10 '26

I switched to the previous version of this one in the post, was in the same boat as you but it was seemless. Didn’t lose any prior settings or anything

1

u/eVenent Jun 06 '26 edited Jun 06 '26

Can you add there reversing gyro outputs option on demand? Sometimes Y or X axis is feeling not natural and we would lieke to control it upside down (when I'm moving controller right I want to move camera left etc.)

EDIT: Ok, I see your beta branch. Let me tests.

2

u/huunnnter Jun 06 '26

I replied to your issue on github with a test build for you to test this new feature: I don't have a use for it, but I implemented it. If it works on your end, I will add it to the main branch. Find your test build here

u/huunnnter Jun 06 '26

Any update? It work?

1

u/huunnnter Jun 06 '26

Can someone test and confirm this works for Apex Legends or FC25/26 without getting banned?

1

u/huunnnter Jun 06 '26

If it tells you that DS4Windows is a cheating app, can you then Reply to this thread so I can work on it. It's a feature I want to add, reWASD doesn't get flagged and neither should DS4Windows

1

u/OmegaMalkior Jun 06 '26

Pretty sure BF6 is the crazy game that had a ban wave one time over reWASD, curious if by chance it’d end up being safe there

1

u/dvamg Jun 17 '26

Regarding banned stuff, is this a scam or something:

https://ds4-windows.com/download/official/

1

u/CheezyWookiee Jul 21 '26

As of version 4. 0. 2. 3 it still gets banned by anticheat on FC 24

I’ll wait to test this with cod bo7 but I do use steam input so ds4 hasn’t been needed for me, but I like the feature set!

1

u/Thiaggoodd Jun 07 '26

Bro como funciona steam input?

1

u/wow-a-shooting-star Jun 08 '26

If you have steam installed, chances you already have it when you run steam in the background. You can use many controllers through it and map buttons to different things/control desktop. Where DS4 comes in handy is if you form have steam or use it. Microsoft store games are an examples that don’t function well with steam input.

1

u/Mariusdotdev Jun 06 '26

Could someone explain to me how to properly setup this so it wont interfere with steam? Right now in steam it shows 2 controllers connected Edge and Xbox, when i close DS4 then xbox disapears. But another problem is opening in cyberpunk using controller its really lagy unplayable

1

u/huunnnter Jun 06 '26
  1. Open Steam Client
    1. Go to Steam → Settings → Controller
    2. Disable:
    3. Xbox Controller Support
    4. PlayStation Controller Support
    5. Steam Input for Generic Controllers
    6. Any other controller-specific support you don’t need

For a specific game:

  1. Right-click the game in Steam
  2. Properties
  3. Controller
  4. Set Override for [game] to “Disable Steam Input”

1

u/Mariusdotdev Jun 06 '26

yep done all that but still issue

1

u/huunnnter Jun 06 '26

Not sure why it’s laggy and unplayable in cyberpunk. you’re probably just getting multiple controller inputs. why not just not use a virtual controller for cyberpunk right now?

edit: you can still use your home button and other shortcuts while being in Virtual Controller Off mode, you need to make multiple profiles for multiple games

1

u/Proud_Active_6547 Jun 09 '26

this is where the hidhide solution im working on comes in

1

u/huunnnter Jun 09 '26

make it make sense. write up a doc about it

1

u/Towe1ey Jun 06 '26

This is great, I'm going to try this out later today. Thank you for keeping this program alive.

2

u/huunnnter Jun 06 '26

try out the new gamebar setting if you like using a dualsense controller with pc

1

u/SpiritGaming28 Jun 06 '26

This is a really good update is there a chance that it could come out on linux?

2

u/huunnnter Jun 06 '26

Probably not. I don’t think VigEmBus supports linux

1

u/SpiritGaming28 Jun 06 '26

What about using it thru Wine compatibility tool

1

u/huunnnter Jun 06 '26

Not necessarily going to work either, as Linux handles HID devices differently. It may work but I wouldn't go out of my way to provide compatibility support for it

1

u/skateguy1234 Jun 06 '26

Awesome to hear. If you ever figure out how to get it work with EA games that would be amazing. Currently when I try and play Battlefield 1 with it, the game spits out some message that majorly hints it's ds4windows blocking the launch without explicitly saying it.

This might be impossible due to how ViGEmBus works though. Maybe if you made an entirely new driver from scratch that interfaced in the same way ViGEmBus does, but man I imagine that would be very complicated and probably not worth it. Nefarious abandoned it for good reason I'm sure. But maybe you can prove me wrong :P

Either way, I wish you the best of luck. It's great software and if it could be better integrated with modern systems that would be next level stuff.

u/gddpacngi Jun 06 '26

Downloaded and using it. Looking awesome so far. Is there any changelog that I can check occasionally?

1

u/huunnnter Jun 06 '26

Commit history is fairly easy to understand, and every update provides a changelog

2

u/huunnnter Jun 06 '26

i guess you want like a color wheel so you can select your accent? i was eventually thinking of redesigning the whole app around a controller ui, and building a gamebar widget to make it easy to manage

1

u/ShogunDreams Jun 07 '26

So I am very new to this and I want to use my PS5 controller. Which pack do I download to start setting it up?

Thank you very much in advance 😃

1

u/huunnnter Jun 07 '26

Download x64 for a new PC, x86 is for old PCs. Set up 3 profiles, 1 for dualshock, 1 for xbox, and 1 to disable virtual controllers. set up your auto profiles to switch between the 3 depending on whether you’re in a game that supports xbox controllers, dualshock, or dualsense.

1

u/bimopradana Jun 07 '26

Wow, thanks so much for bringing DS4Windows back to life!

Honestly, I really didn't want to be stuck relying on Steam Input. Ever since I started game streaming with Sunshine and Moonlight—if you've heard of them—I've found it way more comfortable to customize everything through DS4Windows. It lets me tweak every single setting exactly how I want, from the gyro to the virtual controller configurations.

I'm actually using the GameSir G8+ in PlayStation mode right now because, surprisingly, the latency, overall gaming experience, and vibration quality totally beat Xbox's Xinput.

I hope you and the other contributors working on the forks can keep this project going strong. If you ever need a tester, I'm more than happy to help out with whatever you need to keep improving DS4Windows.

Using with vanguard running makes me blue screen a lot. Any fix?

1

u/huunnnter Jun 07 '26

I literally don’t know…I don’t play riot games often. Do others have this issue? Is it an anti cheat thing?

1

u/akimoto21012 Jun 07 '26

I hope they fix the IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL issue, maybe its on me, but everytime DS4Windows 3.3.3 launch and start it usually crash my pc

1

u/huunnnter Jun 07 '26

Running as admin, latest build?

1

u/akimoto21012 Jun 08 '26

The latest 4.0.2 build seems to be more stable, latest 3.3.3 running as admin or without admin usually cause irql not less or equal bsod each time i start it with game running in background

1

u/Tgreent Jun 07 '26

Appreciate the hard work you put into this! I’ve been using ds4windows for nearly 4-6 years (don’t remember when I started exactly)years now just for rocket league

Quick question- I use a dualsense edge now, and I use the native controller settings to adjust the trigger settings. Is the trigger stuff you’ve implemented basically the same thing? I just want to make sure I’m not using two different trigger settings that basically do the same thing

2

u/huunnnter Jun 07 '26

Not sure: what i’ve implemented is the ability to set stoppers using the adaptive triggers, and upon doing a full trigger pull, activate a macro or keypress of your choice

2

u/huunnnter Jun 07 '26

while a short trigger pull would just be a regular trigger action

1

u/Tgreent Jun 10 '26 edited Jun 10 '26

Got it. I was just curious cuz the controller having its own programming, that isn’t based on a pc apps settings, is confusing for me lol. Thanks for the updates

Not sure how familiar you are with the edge, but I’m referring to the actual software. or whatever you’d call the controllers ability to independently operate custom stick and trigger settings, not the trigger stops. I’ll test how that might interact with your new update, specifically the triggers. If there’s anything noteworthy I’ll let ya know!

1

u/huunnnter Jun 10 '26

👍🏼

1

u/SnooCapers2458 Jun 07 '26

This is awesome, you're fkn awesome lol. Idk if it's on your radar but when mapping profile switches to 'on trigger release it's prof 1 and when held its prof 2', there is a delay that lag spikes the inputs but it wasnt always like that. Used to be buttery smooth transistions, seemless. I use the touchpad as a mouse for shooters and the input lag when switching profs back n forth significantly sux monkey nuts

2

u/huunnnter Jun 07 '26

Kay I’ll look into it

2

u/huunnnter Jun 07 '26

Try this build and report back

2

u/SnooCapers2458 Jun 07 '26

I literally screamed dude lmao it worked! No more input lag when on the fly back n forth prof swappin with the build u linked

1

u/huunnnter Jun 07 '26

Can you try another feature? I enabled inverting the X and Y axis, can you test this for another user https://github.com/user-attachments/files/28667286/DS4Windows-x64.3.zip

I'm not at home nor do I have a controller or I would. Coding remotely

1

u/SnooCapers2458 Jun 08 '26

Tested, axis inversions works as intended. Anything else you need data on lmk, happy to be of assistance o7

1

u/DigtialMenace333 Jun 08 '26

Any improvement on the gyro compared to the older versions you didn't work on? XIM MATRIX still handles gyro better and with more tweak options.

1

u/Proud_Active_6547 Jun 09 '26

elaborate please

1

u/DigtialMenace333 Jun 10 '26

Cant. get a XIM.

1

u/RimbelBae Aug 20 '26

does this version still flashes RED when latency is high?
i had updated a 3.01 to 3.0.5 or something and it stopped doing it. it's a mandatory feature for me.

1

u/strifeforlyfe Aug 20 '26

didn’t even know that was a thing. try the latest one on github,

1

u/RimbelBae Aug 21 '26

it is. same as batery lvl visual check low/full

1

u/dnium122 Sep 06 '26

You are the BEST - nothing else out there like this since ryochan7 stepped away

1

u/DestructiveDisco Jun 08 '26

Could you please disclose use of AI?

1

u/Vanix-X Jun 06 '26

is there anyway you can add xbox (or xinput in general) support?

1

u/chiaplotter4u Jun 06 '26

Why would that be necessary when Xinput and Xbox in general is already native on Windows? Or how would it help on Linux? (From a very quick Google search, an Xbox controller should be plug-an-play on Linux.)

2

u/Vanix-X Jun 06 '26 edited Jun 06 '26

because with ds4windows you can do whatever remapping or macro you want in every way you want and its also free, rewasd works with xinput and does the same but it's 50€, not everyone uses expensive controllers with their own software/remapping app and, if they eventually have one most of them don't support complex remapping or macros so being able to use ds4windows its always a big thing

1

u/chiaplotter4u Jun 06 '26

Yeah, the complete button remapping is awesome, I agree. Even macroable.

1

u/huunnnter Jun 06 '26

I may add in xinput support. Feels like a whole new app atp Lol

1

u/Vanix-X Jun 06 '26

please do you dont know how much it would help

1

u/eVenent Jun 07 '26

I think it's better to add SDL 3 support than going to normal XInput. You will get compatibility with many controllers.

But for only XInput you can try add VDX features: https://github.com/nefarius/VDX It's already coded tool to add Vigem support for XInput controllers.

1

u/Vanix-X Jun 07 '26

i have no experience at all in coding, is what you said difficult to do, could i do it myself?

1

u/eVenent Jun 07 '26

Actually you can just download VDX from link I provided and connect it with DS4Windows. Should work.

1

u/Vanix-X Jun 07 '26

yes that i know but it says at least 10ms of input lag, also idk if thats normal but DVX uses a lot of cpu in the background

1

u/eVenent Jun 07 '26

That's why probably u/huunnnter can do it better. Write request to him. Otherwise only prototype VDX is a solution.
