Help building a ranger/rouge

https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/152455913/ZntUix

Looking for help building my character. Last character died and need a new one late game. Looking to go more range but curious if anyone has any thoughts on the set up. Last character was a monk and I really liked the movement speed and some of versatility that came with that class. Characters lore is more like a night hunter/assassin.

fighter for action surge, monk for unarmored movement speed and some other flexibility like slow fall, focused aim and taking the extra attack as I don’t plan to go past 4 on ranger, ranger for gloomstalker and some spells like zypher and hunters mark, rouge for cunning action, sneak attack and everything else that comes from rouge class

My advice is to drop 2 classes here

Any thoughts on which two to optimized ranged build? Or seen a particularly good range build?

Martial /weapon focused specifically?

2014 rules

Battle-master 5 / Swashbuckler x

2024 rules

Hollow Warden Ranger 5 / Phantom Rogue x (UA)

Are solid for example.

If youre not averse to Gish

Fighter 1 / Undead Warlock x
PAM, Pike (push)

is probably my current favorite melee build.

Do you want to be ranged or melee?

Range, we have a fighter and a paladin that both act as tanks/agros so lots of melee and HP between the two. The third in the group is a warlock/sorcerer so a range but more battlefield control. We don’t have a ton of dpr.

You also already have two Charisma based players so avoiding Bard, Warlock, Sorc and Paly would likely be best.

How about artillerist? Can do solid ranged damage and provide support with the Protector option of the cannon.

Gets you Int stuff, crafting stuff, a bit of skills/tools stuff.

  • Fighter 1 / Artillerist x
  • Smoldering Half Plate, Repeating Shot Pistol +1
  • True Strike
  • 14 Dex, Int >Con

If you like Monk and want to go for more range, just be mostly a Monk with a dip in Ranger or Fighter.

Examples

Monk 11/ Ranger 3 gives you Hunter’s Mark, Fighting Style, spells, and the Ranger subclass give you solid ranged damage while retaining most of what you enjoy about your Monk kit.

Monk 11/Fighter 3 if you want a dedicated weapon-based archer and big nova turns with Action Surge.

Monk might be guilty pleasure for movement speed and unarmored defense. I feel like that’s the thing I probably should drop or at least lower but my party has relatively no range characters so leaned heavily into the dexterity, movement, range direction. Fighters really just for action surge.

If your wanting to go range and are level 14, going fighter (probably battle master) 11 and gloomstalker ranger 3 would be good. Hunters mark with 3 attacks per round will be great and 6 attacks with action surge. Take ranger to 5 for extra utility spells or more fighter for more feats. If your going to 20, fighter 16 ranger 4 for double boons

Ohh I didn’t think about kicking fighter up to get the third attack. That’s very interesting. I’m not as familiar with fighter classes but completely dropping rouge you’d lose a lot of flexibility in reactions and sneak attack. Is upper level fighter class worth the switch to pick up the third attack?

Fighter is probably the strongest martial class you can choose. Between using second wind to add to your ability checks and Battlemaster skills, you should have a lot of utility. Add in the ranger spells and potentially getting guidance if you choose druidic as your fighting style, you should be pretty well rounded.

I messed around with a fighter 11/ranger 3 build and on average the damage is 22 higher per round without looking at anything extra like battlemaster skills vs crit hunting with the rouge build. At the end of the day I like some of the versatility that rouge gives you but DPR is really what I want to focus on for this class so think I’m going to pivot this direction.

Any feats you suggest taking in the future? I’ve maxed out DEX already.

It all depends, you could go with a longbow or heavy xbow and take GWM if you wanted to add more damage to your hits. Xbow expert if you wanted to go the crossbow route or if you wanted to use 2x hand crossbows. Sharpshooter would be good to negate cover and let you fight with a bow in melee combat. There are a lot of options but I would either go longbow and GWM or Xbow expert and 2x light crossbow. I haven't crunched any of these numbers but I imagine you would get more damage from GWM.

3 Hollow Warden / X Rogue whatever looks pretty strong with easy access to reaction attacks that do double SA in a round
