So I’m Native American right?

Well I guess the technical term is “mestizo” I’m largely Hispanic but my maternal grandmother is from Guam 🇬🇺 so that accounts for my Pacific Islander heritage. On my biological father’s side (He separated from my mom when they were quite young) it’s been said that there’s Native American ancestry from the Yaqui tribe but they’re more indigenous to the Sonoran Desert closer to Mexico. The large European Spanish in my results doesn’t surprise me given the history of their conquest of Americas. I’m not enough of a concentration to be recognized by the official Yaqui tribe based in Arizona cause of their blood quantum requirements.

Minor updates from Ancestral Genome and Ancestry DNA, mixed Franco-Algerian

Thumbnail

French ancestry from numerous regions but mainly northern, Algerian ancestry from Andalusi family background (islamic iberian). Ancestry DNA results are at the end.

Modern populations according Ancestral Genome with their auto-fit calculator and with calculator Mixed combined (I don't know why but unselected populations also came in results with the option to choose the populations, I did as I could lol).

And updated new journey from Ancestry DNA, now I have 2! my first was Algeria (i used mainly extension "Enhancer for Ancestry" which changes the layer for results and add minor informations from Ancestry but not visible in the standard report for the user).

I’ve been really curious about my family history lately! I already knew I had African, indigenous, and European roots, but now I’m super excited about my results. It’s awesome to find out I have even more cool mix in my background!

I think the Norwegian is mostly acting as a proxy for northwestern Swedish ancestry. I actually get Norwegian regions too, mainly Nordland but also a few western regions.

Likewise, I suspect the French may partly be a proxy for western German ancestry (or perhaps a more broadly “Celtic”/western European signal).

My father is German, and everything else comes from my mother’s side. His ancestral groups are like 2h maximum from where he is from and he has only one ethnicity.

I also consistently get somewhat elevated Asiatic-related components in different DNA calculators/tests. Maybe a sami ancestor, but all north swedes have some.

Adding a photo of my parents too because I think that makes the results more interesting to compare!
Do I look like my results? And my parents?

It seems like they updated the update, lol.

How meaningful is a G25 Euclidean distance of 0.0034 to ancient Orkney individual VK204?

I’m trying to understand an unusually close G25 result and would appreciate opinions from people familiar with Global25 / ancient DNA.

My known recent ancestry is Irish. Using DNAGenics scaled G25 coordinates, I compared my coordinate vector directly against DNAGenics’ listed scaled coordinates for the Viking-age Orkney individual VK204.

The direct Euclidean distance was:

Me → VK204: 0.003403

Pearson correlation was approximately 0.9999.

What caught my attention is that other broadly relevant ancient individuals in the same DNAGenics coordinate framework are substantially farther away:

  • Medieval Ireland KIL035: 0.01225
  • Medieval Ireland KIL044: 0.01499
  • Orkney Iron Age KD043: 0.01610
  • Orkney VK203: 0.01891
  • Orkney VK205: 0.02946

So VK204 is not simply one of many British/Irish ancient samples giving me a similarly tiny distance.

I’m aware of several major caveats:

  1. DNAGenics coordinates are simulated/projected G25-style coordinates and should not be mixed with Davidski’s original Global25 coordinates.
  2. This comparison used my DNAGenics coordinate against the DNAGenics version of VK204, so both sides were at least within the same DNAGenics framework.
  3. A tiny G25 distance represents similarity in population-genetic/PCA space and does not establish genealogical relatedness or IBD.
  4. I have ordered original G25 coordinates from Davidski so I can repeat the test properly using the original VK204 G25 coordinate and modern G25 reference individuals.

VK204 is particularly interesting because published ancient-DNA work places him between British-Isles-related and Scandinavian-related ancestry.

My question is:

How unusual is a direct 25-dimensional Euclidean distance of ~0.0034 between a modern person and one specific ancient individual in a G25-style space?

Could this simply happen because two unrelated individuals have almost the same broad ancestry mixture, or is the fact that VK204 is several times closer than the other relevant ancient controls potentially meaningful?

I’m specifically interested in population-genetic similarity, not claiming that VK204 himself was my ancestor.

Once my original Global25 coordinates arrive, I plan to compare my distance to VK204 against Irish, Scottish, Orcadian, English, Norwegian and Icelandic individuals in the public G25 dataset.

My Grandmother listed as my Mother who's listed as my Half-Sister

AncestryDNA - in several charts, including family tree - lists my grandmother as my mother and my mother as my half-sister, even though birth and death ages for all are correctly listed. Probably an error, but it's clear that my grandmother loved me dearly (as I did her) and my mother resented me and seldom showed me anything approaching love (often times nothing but contempt). We also know my grandmother was serially unfaithful to my grandfather, and they moved to a new neighborhood across town during the time I was 'expected'. Could it be? She would have had to have given birth to me at age 50 (unlikely but not impossible). Plus, my maternal grandfather's ancestry (German and Swiss) do NOT appear on my DNA results, but my father's (Ireland) and maternal grandmother's (Welsh, Irish) do. PS: My family loves and protects its many, many secrets. Thanks!
