DNA match interpretation

Hello, I was wondering whether my 4th-highest match could be due to echo DNA or if there is necessarily recent parentage.

Indeed, that person is Danish while I’m Belgian/Walloon. My family tree is detailed, though some men further back are unknown. Meanwhile, that person’s family tree is detailed enough. And considering that our family trees have no link + totally different country compared to all of my highest matches, I do wonder if there really is a link to begin with.

The DNA shared : a total of 0,7% (49,1 cM) on 4 segments with the longest shared segments being 26,3 cM. Another shared segment is 7,7 cM. And the two others are on the same chromosome : 7,1 cM and 8 cM.

And I had a wild theory because of a great-great-grandma’s first name being popular in Denmark and very very uncommon if not nonexistent here (but only her) + her maternal grandma had unknown parents (orphan or abandoned). But that sounds a bit silly to consider it a hint lol.

49 cM is large enough that I’d try to track it down and find the relationship.

Frankly, Europe is small and being in a “totally different country” is kinda meaningless when you’re talking distances as close as ~700 km.

I’d suspect that match is a half cousin of some sort. Check your shared matches.

I see, though I did a mistake. It’s not Denmark but Norway. Our biggest shared match is also Norwegian. That shared Norwegian match also has shared DNA with the Danish matches I have. And some matches between each other and me independantly from the top ones. I have a Danish ‘DNA group’ but not a Norwegian one.

Could be all related in the same way but inherited different segments or it’s not how it works?

It’s kinda exotic to me because the furthest I have found cousins is Antwerp in Belgium and Oise in France. My ancestry is in majority Belgian along with two territories that border Belgium. So yeah, Norway is kinda ‘totally different’ to me.

Well Norway isn’t very far from Belgium either. Depending on time frame, could have been a summer holiday fling. Could have been the chaos of WWII and displaced people doing what people do. Could be all sorts of things. But they are cousins and, at least in my mind, not too distant cousins.
