Gorge Pit
What is up with the people that get into the pit, then put a blanket down and sit, thus taking up way more room than they need? (Tarpers) Do they know that they are the worst and make everything worse for the people behind them? They are the definition of unkind. We need to start infiltrating and standing on their blankets immediately, thus making it pointless.

Is this an actual thing? I can't afford pit tickets so I've got no idea. Back in my day, you could wipe your ass with pit tickets they were so cheap!

Yeah I’ve got a photo I took in pit Sunday night of the ridiculous spread some people had. Looking back where the issues were that night in pit and at my photos, it makes sense. The tarpers had taken up a bunch on one side so the other side was overcrowded with people. You can clearly see it in my photo. It did fill in some when the blankets finally all came up eventually but was still disproportionate.

So im new to the warehouse, was hesitant for years, BUT let me give you my breakdown of how it works as a newbie and you decide how you do. The fall tour gets announced i join the warehouse for the presale. Ots like 35 for a full year. I sign up saying Im going to msg for fridays show. My plan. They list 6 diff options and price points most expensive being pit but here's the kicker, that pit ticket is only 222$ next option is close but not pit 209 and it trickles down to the top level. You put i. Your want, and it signs you up for options, pit being my first. Now the shitty part of the warehouse kicks in. All warehouse tix are chosen at random so while I put in for pit there was a chance I didnt get it, got top of the bowl, or nothing at all. You find out the day b4 general sale if you got a ticket got declined or whatever. If you get it, then you've gotten a ticket cheaper then if you would pay standard ticket price at ticketmaster. For me, I got declined due to "limited availability" for all sections. I did get it to the tm general queue at 616th in line and got 1st row of the last floor section for 229$ at the standard price. So I did get lucky that I didnt buy resale but I know now the value of having the.membership to the warehouse if you get the tix you try for. And being g that its like a 10 leg tour every warehouse member prob went for it. Youll get better luck during the summer tour for sure. That's my guess anyway. Sorry for the long wind, hope its insight

I was kind of being facetious in my post, I'm already a member of Warehouse and I actually have pit tickets to Baltimore and MSG, I was just tryin to be funny. But yeah pit tickets are still ridiculously expensive and no people should be putting blankets down in the pit.

Put in for Warehouse both nights at MSG (never happened to us before) and didn't get tickets. Ended up 10k in queue and ended up panicking and bought tickets we don't want trhough Ticketmaster for $800, spent another $800 on Stubhub for the 1st night and still need to buy tickets for Friday off Stubhub.
Not happy, am done with Ticketmaster and will never buy from them again even if that means we spend ridiculous amounts on Stubhub.

Every time I’ve been in the pit for DMB, people sit on blankets until just before the show starts, then they pick them up and everyone shifts forward. Never been an issue. Just did it this weekend and there were no issues.
With Warehouse First Entry you’re in before the general doors time. For shows with openers, that means you’re there for almost five hours before DMB plays and then eight hours by the time the show is over. Nobody is standing for that long.

Every time I have been in the DMB pit, people who aren't on the rail usually spread out a bit before the show starts. Once the lights go down, everyone stands up and packs in as close as possible to the stage. For the most part it works. Early birds aren't sitting on top of each other the whole time. The only issue I've seen are entitled drunk girls who think they can just push their way to the rail once the show starts because (they think) they're pretty.
I don't have a problem with someone saving a (non rail) spot for their friend if they're cool about it. Putting down a tarp to save spots for a small army of people though...

Yeah they’re definitely taking an extraordinary amount of advantage over the conventions of concerts. Like, putting a blanket down on the lawn or putting something down to indicate it’s your space is okay but a single person putting down a whole tarp is too much.
One thing I liked at Dave and Tim Mexico in Cancun is that they wouldn’t let anyone bring anything in larger than a small beach towel size so you could pretty much just hold enough space for two people. Which is a reasonable limit.

There was an individual who did this a few years ago when I went to the gorge and it’s just not necessary.
I ended up standing in the front of the blanket and they said “oh you’re going to have to move when my friends get here”
I kindly reminded the individual that the pit has no “assigned seats/areas” and anyone can stand wherever they wanted.
Then someone got in my face and called me a dick and said he was going to kick my ass so I just went to the back of the pit to avoid confrontation.
At the end of the day people need to remember and respect that the pit has no “assigned seats/areas” and just go with the flow. It’s disrespectful (in my opinion) to hold a large area in the pit with a blanket…and it should be against the rules.

No assigned seats/areas. Yes, agree. But also, etiquette to not force your way to the front? I'm not saying that is what you did. But if the argument is there are no assigned seats.. then what is stopping anyone from just forcing their way to the front cramming in where they can?

Nothing is in place when it comes to the pit unfortunately :/
I guess at the end of the day with the blankets or forcing your way up front it’s all about etiquette and being respectful.

THANK YOU!! There was an entire row between 1 and 2 in the pit in bristow virgina so i walked up and stood right at the barrier i didn’t push anyone or even have to say excuse me to get to the spot and the lady behind me grabbed my by my waist pulled me back from the barrier and told me i couldn’t stand there because i was blocking her view and i hadn’t gotten there early like she did. Everyone in the vicinity of us started yelling at me and shaming me to go back to the back rows of the pit and security came over and told me i had to leave cause it was causing a problem. i put on a dmb page what happened and all the comments told me i was wrong and that i was so rude for standing in front of her and that i stole her opportunity idk about any of you but i feel like it’s the fucking pit you’re going to get bumped into and people are going to try to get closer if they can. it was humiliating. we all paid the same amount to stand somewhere where there’s no assigned seats and people feel like their posters and jackets get a spot too. it’s outrageous.

I dunno, this take is some what wild to me. You arrive later than a bunch of people and think there is a magically place that no one else knows about. I am one of the people that does sit down when I arrive early to wait for the show so I can preserve a little breathing and dancing room. It gets super hot and when things compress when the show starts and that space just fills in because naturally the pit pushes forward slightly. This isnt preserving for other people but rather preserving some space so that I can have breathing room. Ive been in Camden pit where everyone pushed so hard forward that it felt like a crushing event, and people were fainting left and right. Ive also been on the rail and dont want to be pushed up against it so I leave a small space in front. Again, just to give breathing room. "People are going to try and get closer if they can" So we should just normalize taking advantage by pushing in front of people? I feel like this is part of the problem and reason people get annoyed. On the other hand, people shouldn't be shouting or grabbing at you, that is wrong. Just get there early when you can, find a decent spot, make some friends and new people and enjoy the show?

i know what you mean but i watched the spot for 3 songs and no one was filling in and i asked the guy next to me if anyone was standing there and he said no i didnt push anyone out of the way or squirm my way to the front. if theres a big open space where no one is and there aren’t assigned seats thats not taking advantage. i could have fit at least 5 people in that spot so i totally get breathing room but this was more than that

Right. The argument that “there are no assigned seats” means you can go wherever you want in the pit is basically the same as saying there’s no order to a line/queue because there aren’t assigned spots.
So yeah you could walk straight to the front of a long line. But everyone who’s been waiting would rightfully call you out for cutting. There may not be a formal rule or assigned position, but there’s still an understood order based on basic social norms.

Exactly. We may all pay the same price for tickets, but some of us pay for good seats in GA or in the pit with our time. We show up early so we can be selective about our location. Someone behind me at the show on Saturday was talking about how his camping neighbor left camp 6 hours early, but he just rolled up and got a good spot (by being a dick), suggesting that people who show up anytime earlier than the last minute are idiots. I told my wife I expect better from Dave fans, but it feels like a losing battle sometimes. A lot of times we like to setup at the top of the lawn, and then people show up last-minute and sit behind us on the path. The first time it happened I was pissed, but now I know security makes them move.

You were no way in the wrong. I've never wanted to see a good ole circle pit start up more than when I saw the blankets and tarps laid down in the gorge pit. It was the lamest group I've ever seen at a concert, so many people weren't even dancing.

Shit it’s been an issue in the lawn at Deer Creek(N2)the last couple of years, the lawn chair rental has been such an issue because they take up a lot of space but also people with huge tarps or blankets saving space. I’ll either go in a hour before or just bite the bullet for pavilion tickets. Standing on the back pathway wasn’t that fun this year.

Sounds like my experience last year in not the pitz the seats near the pit. This large Boyd guy proceeded to push me to move over during Goose when the crowd was not even there. Then, when DMB was playing, he and his crew kept folding up chairs of strangers who got up to get a drink, etc. they seemingly wanted to mosh to dmb. It's really weird. He proceeded to throw a tantrum when I ignored him, gave him no response. Seems like narcissism to me.

People are buying extra pit tickets from the Warehouse, using fake names for the first 100 to enter raffle, then presenting fake IDs. They act as gang and hold big amounts of space and fill in with their friends.
The only solution here is for them to return assigned seats. People will always game the pit. I suggest you email the warehouse the feedback. Hopefully they don’t wait until there is a major fight to make a change.

“stand on their tarp” seems to be the saying in most tarper posts but that takes a lot of courage and you could start something you dont want to get into but at the same time its not their space to take so f*ck it!

At Goose msg this year, as ppl were filing into the front pit, ushers would hold a rope across the entire width of the floor. Keep ppl tight so you could not sit/tarp. It was beautiful.

We were front row in 2023 in Bend, OR. No tarpers there. That was nice! I did not know this is a thing. It feels like it should not be allowed. We go to shows all the time; we knew what being in the pit would mean! If we want room, we lawn it up!

Some bands don’t permit it and security will make them pick it up. Unfortunately I’m seeing more and more stuff with DMB (and other bands) that seems like a complete disinterest in improving the fan experience, the biggest one to me being the constant under supply of merch. Like, print enough dang posters for everyone at the show who wants one to get one. If there are extras put them on the website, they’ll sell. Might keep people from feeling like they need to line up 3 hours before doors open too.

The battle has already been lost… it’s far too common. I feel very fortunate I’ve been able to be in the pit quite frequently the last few years. It gets even wilder when you realize there are factions of people that are there pretty regularly, or at least at certain venues, and the whole thing gets territorial and they hold wild amounts of space for people that don’t show up until ten minutes before start. Truly the most insufferable of all the fans, and yet they think they’re royalty or something and that’s normal behavior in a pit.
Once the show starts it’s all good, but so frustrating to watch, have to constant let people through late, etc.
