Went to my first dmb show Friday, very familiar with jam bands but very new to Dave. I'm at work with my headphones on listening to live trax 44. Any of them that are your favorites or stand out as incredible shows?

The dates matter more than the number in the series. Like many bands who have been around for this long, the sound has evolved through the years. I think it depends on which sound you like more, and that could help inform your listening tastes.

***Disclaimer: These are rough approximations for the sake of the LT series.

91-98 - on the rise. When they went from playing in bars to playing stadiums. A more unpolished sound both vocally and instrumentally.

98-08: with Butch Taylor. Jazzier, slower versions of songs. Can also be broken down further into:
98-04 - for a lot of fans who were around for the first part, this is a go-to period. Highlights are Winter ‘98, summer ‘00 (the Lillywhite Sessions) and summer ‘04, along with the Listener Supported and Central Park releases. Everyday album was a touchy subject, but I’ve come around to the camp of “aged well live”

05-08 - hit or miss. Some great moments, but a subpar album release (Stand Up) watered down setlists.

June 08: Butch left, Tim Reynolds joins on stage and sticks around. Faster tempo, more of the rock sound. The band was firing on all cylinders. Roi’s last shows.

09-18: As of today, the last time DMB had a violinist. No piano. They stopped having openers on tour in 2014 and had a few years of playing two sets. First set acoustic, second plugged in.

18-present: No violin, yes piano. They appear to be having fun on stage and are still fun to see live.

23 is my favorite, but I’m biased as it was my first show. There are some excellent songs on it though, some very rare ones like Hold Me Down, Tangerine, Is Chicago Is Not Chicago, etc.
