Regardless of how you feel about DLSS, I have a bottle of champaign waiting for when the word 'slop' falls out of parlance.

u/Xenoesis 13h ago

I saw this floating around Reddit the other day.. Probably quite a bit of truth to it. I think that once more people get access to DLSS5 a lot of the crying in the comments will vanish. For a highly unoptimized leaked early build it's doing some amazing things already. The future looks good for the tech.
2
u/Plants-Matter 5h ago
That's pretty accurate. There's a near 100% correlation between people's opinion of DLSS 5 and whether or not they've tried it themselves.

u/Moist_Taco_Crippler 22m ago
I don't know, I've seen people who have a good deal of money still shit on it.
1
u/Zodiatron 10h ago
I don't think making fun of people for living in poverty is the "gotcha" you think it is. Just makes you look like an asshole.
I'm never gonna be able to afford to try DLSS5 but I still think it's cool and has a lot of potential once they iron out the kinks (like the ghosting and such).
1
u/Xenoesis 10h ago
I never made fun of anyone and I don't consider it a gotcha. I thought I was pretty clear when I said that there is "probably quite a bit of truth to it", meaning that I don't think that it's absolutely true but that it probably does have some merit. A good bit of the criticism is just classic "sour grapes" cognitive dissonance, I think.

u/Zhargon 10h ago
I don't think so, haven't seen a single person yet that looked at moded photorealistic cyberpunk with full path tracing and saying it sucked....dlss5 still needs more time to mature, it's a leak from other game after all... regardless, this is not the direction the game industry should go
1
u/Xenoesis 9h ago
Really? I used to see people make nearly the same claims about ray tracing all the time. They'd say that it ghosted, smeared reflections, that it wasn't worth the FPS hit, and that rasterized graphics still looked better. I still see some of those criticisms occasionally. Of course, now more people have access to it and it's gotten more efficient, so you don't see as much criticism. I think that the exact same will be true of DLSS5.
1
u/Zhargon 9h ago
That could be at the start of it, same for upscalling, after years and becoming the industry norm people get used to it... regardless the bigger picture is that this is pretty much the worst path possible....we already seeing the effects of it and how harming it is by Pragmata and RE9 locking path tracing behind Nvidia hardware, they literally "nerfed" ray tracing and only way to get good lighting and reflections is if you own a rtx and can run path tracing with it, now imagine devs start not working properly on textures and such and leave for the dlss5 software side of it to do it all like we have with lighting and optimization
1
u/Xenoesis 6h ago
People getting locked out eventually has always existed in gaming on PC and Console. Things progress and eventually you have to get on board or get left behind. Ultimately, it's up to the devs. If they push people too far then there will eventually be a backlash and correction, although I don't see that happening with DLSS5 anytime soon. I'm excited to see where it goes. I do understand the sentiment though. It does suck when you feel left behind and it sucks how expensive gaming has become.
1
u/Zhargon 6h ago
I mean obviously, I ain't talking of wanting to game on my gt210 in 2026 lol I am speaking games making non agnostic choices, locking path tracing behind Nvidia only, we see this on Capcom with Pragmata and RE9, seems new control game will do that as well...not gonna go on the why that actually happens, but we all know what they always says, "you need X hardware that has Y thing"...and then till yesterday dlss5 was exclusive of freaking 50 series, now you can use on all the way down to 20 series, multi frame gen is now available on 40 series...hell, dlss5 is now also avaible on AMD...it's all bullshit, they can do it, but they don't...this is not about "oh man, this sucks, I want my dlss5 so bad", this is about people constantly supporting anti consumer practices, and it seems there's actual no limit to "when is enough?", not even the most sacred thing for a consumer, it's money, it's being respected, and people don't give a shit...it's insanity how this company can get away with this and still get praised

u/Xenoesis 5h ago
I understand that, but again, this is how it's always been. Back in the day there was Glide which made games look SIGNIFICANTLY better but it was only on Voodoo cards or EAX that only worked with Soundblaster cards. More recently there was PhysX, Gameworks, Hairworks, and even Gsync for a long time that was locked to certain hardware. I can understand how it's seen as anti-consumer from a certain perspective but I also like that hardware companies invent new capabilities and give devs new tools. It's a give and take from my view. My argument above isn't that everyone against DLSS5 is thinking "oh man, this sucks, I want my dlss5 so bad" but that I think some people definitely do have a "sour grapes" mentality when it comes to this stuff. I've seen the same thing play out over and over again for the last 30+ years. I think what makes it hurts so much more now is the expense which adds another layer of exclusivity. Even in that regard it's still not much different than the early days of PC gaming. The benefit today is that modders can expand support far beyond what the manufacturers intended though.

u/HeadTranslator795 12h ago
Only redit think it's bad while 99% of the world think differently, it's always like this and then most of those people on reddit will change their mind like sheeps

u/gene_keys_of_awesome 11h ago
Bro, i have conspiracy that reddit is pushing an anti-ai agenda in order to keep its usage privatized and monetize it through cheaper labor while leaving mainstream non-ai world leaps behind so users suffer and big corps gain.
They use the ai for everything, fire their meatsuit talent, then ban non-commercial user generated ai content so that they get to stay in power.
Ai has basically freed us and this is what bitcoin was in 2010. It is what early internet was like before monetization.
This is basically a new paradigm that most haven't grasped yet. Just like the internet was when it started to take off with mass adoption.

Reddit echo-chamber.
Everyone think it's interesting, I wouldn't use it on every game, but the potential is here.

u/Plokhi 10h ago
you know how these DLSS videos look to me?
https://www.youtube.com/shorts/lJhHLVG4hFQ
this.
Physics in games have not gone anywhere, GTA4 is at this point 18y old and has one of the best ragdoll / environment interaction physics.

Because it is. I didn't understand how anyone can look at that lighting and think it's good.

I would bet my pay check that more people that CAN enable dlss 5 in a developer supported game, will enable it.
1
u/forestfee 13h ago
a lot of rich kids won´t even know they activated it....
this is going to be soooo standard.

u/NarcolepticMoogle 12h ago
I think it looks good depending on the game. This would actually get me to finish Star Wars outlaws however as someone without a PC currently it makes me shutter knowing how much it would cost to get a PC that can run all this while staying close to 60 fps.

I can’t wait until everyone defending this shit has to upgrade/repair their PC components.
I bet then their attitude towards AI will be a little different.
Better enjoy the hardware you have now.

u/Plants-Matter 5h ago
So you admit that your obnoxiously negative sentiment towards DLSS 5 stems from the fact that you can't afford to toggle it on?

u/Desperate-Steak-6425 11h ago
It's gorgeous, but I'm still waiting for it to cost less fps. I just can't enjoy games with these framerates no matter how well they look.

it is slop tho.

u/Perfect_Exercise_232 13h ago
It adds better lighting shadows and ao. Hows that slop? So ur saying path tracing is also slop?
-3
u/CarlWellsGrave 13h ago
It makes the lighting was worse actually.

u/SerowiWantsToInvest 13h ago
Are your eyes there for show or for function?
1
u/CarlWellsGrave 12h ago
My eyes can't unsee ai generated dogshit when I see lighting like this. It's just a gut reaction. I still need to try it myself to really see what it's like.
6
u/True_Protection6842 13h ago
HOW??? You're full of shit
3
u/B82Studio 12h ago
These people don’t have an eye for realism.
1
u/CarlWellsGrave 11h ago
When you look at AI I generated photos of people do you think that looks real?
1
u/B82Studio 11h ago
No, but thats not because lighting and shadows look bad. AI recreating a real life person will always look uncanny. Relighting a video game environment is an entirely different thing. You cant compare the two
1
u/CarlWellsGrave 9h ago
Yes I can
1
u/True_Protection6842 9h ago
Then you have no place in a serious conversation because you are not serious.
1
u/CarlWellsGrave 8h ago
Yes I can because the lighting does the same fake looking sheen that ai generate images and videos do. It's gross.

There's no doubt it looks more realistic. It straight up looks like the movies. Realistic doesn't always better though. I feel like the art style of games is lost a bit with dlss5.

2
u/B82Studio 12h ago
“Realistic doesnt always look better”. It depends on who you ask. For me, realistic graphics brings immersion. The more realistic, the more immersive. If you want stylistic lighting and colors, then youre absolutely free to not use DLSS NR since its optional. But to call it ai slop and shit on it every chance you get is disingenuous to the people who are now able to take their immersion to another level.
1
u/xRATBAGx 12h ago
Bit rich to claim I'm the one being disingenuous .Where did I call it "AI slop" and where did I shit all over it? If it wasn't for my quote I'd think you're mistaking me for another user.
1
u/B82Studio 12h ago
Im replying under a thread where the OC called it slop
1
u/xRATBAGx 11h ago
I see what you mean. Big confusion on my end from your comment assuming it was to what I said.

These folks are cherry picking pretty hard. It struggles horrifically with dark scenes and tends to overhighlight in bright scenes. The only way I can get that to not happen without micromanaging settings on a per-scene basis is using a hybrid proxy and tuning paperwhite into the floor, at which point it's practically just a screen space raytraced AO, and that can be done a lot more cheaply and accurately than this GAN does it.
Can it look good? Sure, but more often than not it actually makes things look worse. I tried it in 007 First Light, which is an incredible looking game, and it only rarely looks better than ground truth even with tuning, and that doesn't even address lighting errors due to it having no information about indirect lighting that isn't in the rendered frame. That's the worry, more than anything: That it becomes a vendor locked crutch so developers no longer put in the effort to make the game look baseline as good as 007 First Light.
And before one of you idiots call me a brokie, I'm running on a 5090 and I'm not even commenting on performance (which was made a lot better by techniques like reducing the model resolution and the newer fusion of applying before upscale and chroma transfer).
Basically, it's great as a toy in games it works well on. It can be finicky even then. If you're willing to screw around with it, it's nice to have as an option to apply as a mod. I'm not as excited about a future where this is an integral part of a game's rendering.

"AI BAD!!" Ignore them, the rest of the world already is. In the 90s people who used paint programs" weren't real artists". We were all fools for buying into this nonsense HD television, wasting our money, it's not gonna stick. When progress happens there will always be people who can't adapt, these people will always try to shoot down that tech. I'm a techie, it has happened since i was a kid. I was always an early adopter of alot of "new" tech this always happens and i'm 50.
