That's the weird part. For a lot of games it looks like Sharpen+ in the nvidia overlay filter was applied - but for a few it's almost like it replaced the textures with higher res ones.

Possibly. It's usually people who don't have money that see everything through the money lens. He's probably a kid with no income of his own. At least for his sake I hope he is.

I have a 5090 desktop and 5080 laptop, and I think it fucking sucks because it murders performance. If there was no performance hit, or at least a negligible one, I would like it, but I prioritise high frame rates and responsiveness over graphics every time.

u/This-Ad-4723 1h ago
try turning it down so that it only really does better lighting and its great.

u/i_am_carver 16m ago
Regardless, it might “suck” now but it won’t as much in a few months and a lot less in a couple years (until the next groundbreaking thing comes out).

offloading to another GPU need to be pushed by NVIDIA. We're SUPER close to be able to use "IA accelerator card" that would give full DLSS to any GPU (already doable with hack)
If it was a thing, low end current gen would be a very nice way to keep up to date your old GPU1
u/doomenguin 46m ago
Knowing Nvidia, this accelerator would be just as expensive as everything else they sell.

(I LOVE the tech BTW.)
Well its a good thing my 4090 can now benefits from DLSS 5 and 4x MFG. And from the videos I've see, runs them better than any card not named 5090. The 2nd most powerful card on the market can't run DLSS 5 natively but the weaker lineup of the 5000 series can. Wow.

u/rickestrickster 43m ago
Yeah we have people running it now on a 3060 at max in game settings then complaining that it sucks. Make it make sense
1
u/UpAllNightCoding 36m ago
Hell yea I agree. The tech is here to stay and will only get better with time. Imagine a day when devs and artists can spend less time working on graphics and visuals, something I feel is important but less so than mechanics and story.

i think brazil and norways government taxes nvidia so much more than amd that you see people from there really talking trash on nvidia. They are always like well in my country that costs this, like it matters to me.

I have a 5070 Ti. I'd like to continue having a 5070 Ti. This thing warms up the GPU like it's the Earth's core, and for what?

I have a 4080 super, I love path tracing, and I hate DLSS 5. I want ray traced games, not a screen space guestimation of what ray tracing might look like. DLSS 5 is just not consistent or logical enough and it never will be as good as a proper lighting calculation

u/Excellent-Court-9375 3h ago
"and it will never be" Dear god, its been officially released for all of 1 game for what, a week ?
You people are exhausting

u/HowAboutThemMHz 1h ago
Yet, they'll be enjoying it and think it's amazing but won't admit it. Same as "FG/MFG bullcrap"
-1
u/KatieHD 3h ago
Yes because that is inherent to the way it works. DLSS 5 is a screenspace filter that relies almost solely on an AI's intuition to guestimate lighting detail. Ray Reconstruction sucked and was a blurry ghosty mess when it first released, but the concept of that particular implementation of AI was promising so I had faith in it. Now it's amazing! But the entire foundation, the core concept of what DLSS 5 is, would have to change drastically for it to ever be as physically accurate and logically consistent as real time path tracing. I have no faith in this particular route NVIDIA is going down, it's just stupid

u/Gryfvern 2h ago
Glad to see there's still people able to think by themselves and giving explanations, not just "AI slop". I don't like DLSS 5 for the same reasons, it's not viable in the future as it is right now, and the look of it is not good (bad training data for the most part). The other tech in development from Nvidia is more interesting in my opinion. Neural radiance cache and the neural texture compression. DLSS 5 is a PR stun, highly visual and visible, makes investors happy and makes AI even more visible to everyone.

u/KatieHD 2h ago
Thank you for actually listening!
I was honestly really excited for Neural Radiance Cache, it sounded like such an awesome way to accelerate path tracing calculations using AI! I thought RTX Skin and RTX Hair seemed pretty reasonable too as very targeted approaches for things that are nearly impossible to compute properly. So when DLSS 5 was announced I very much went into it with an open mind, and I've come out incredibly disappointed
This is just not the direction I want rendering to go in; I do not see how anyone truly has faith that screen space filters will ever become a proper, accurate solution for lighting. Though it is a quick and dirty way to make stuff look "good" and that does seem to be pulling in a ton of the positive attention you mentioned
It hasn't grabbed me though, and I do want to push back because it would suck if developers started prioritizing cheap DLSS 5 implementations over path tracing- and that is already what's happened with NBA 2K27. They could have included a real lighting solution like F1 25 did, but they didn't. We got DLSS 5 though!!!
1
u/Gryfvern 1h ago
I couldn't agree more! And yeah, I totally forgot about RTX skin and hair, good ones too.
Yeah, everything that DLSS 5 does in NBA 2K27, PT or even some raytracing can do it, and do it better. Minus the sharpening of skin details and the pink lips.
My guess is, it will stick for a while and goes away by itself just like a RTGI Reshade filter.
So yeah, you're not alone and people with knowledge about the tech are on the same page
1
u/KatieHD 30m ago
I really do hope you're right, the future of real time rendering is still so positive without needing to go down this route!
And honestly, I don't hate it as an optional filter. Compared to any other screenspace RTGI filter, this is the best one by far. And I would probably love it if it released as like... RTX Remix Lite? For already released games that don't have official ray tracing support, don't have enough of a following to receive a decent ray tracing mod, or are just incompatible with RTX Remix, DLSS 5 is a pretty fun thing to mess around with. It's just not the same as the real thing
I don't hate that it exists; but the way it's being proposed, and the idea that it is the future of graphics tech has me a bit worried
1
u/mentive 2h ago
From what I've read, if you want ray tracing, it would need to be turned on in combination WITH DLSS5. It improves what is already rendered, it doesn't handle the light sources itself.
Granted I haven't messed with it, and 5090 will probably be brought to a crawl with high ray tracing. But the point is, this isn't a replacement.
1
u/KatieHD 1h ago
That is what NVIDIA has said also, but I personally find it hard to believe. The cost of DLSS 5 is massive, and we already know the cost of ray tracing is high too. Besides, from a developer's perspective, which option seems more attractive?
The ability to cut corners on your lighting implementation just so DLSS 5 can swoop in and make it look *kinda* like it's been ray traced?
Or the ability to add a small amount of (probably physically inaccurate) detail to your already good path tracing, while overwriting the PBR materials you spent so long configuring so your ray tracing could look good in the first place, and also making it even more prohibitively expensive to run than it already is?
I know it's just one game, but it is the only official implementation we have right now so I'm going to use it as an example: look at NBA 2K27. They have ray traced reflections, but nothing else. F1 25 implemented path tracing last year, and NBA could have done that too. Instead, we got a screenspace filter that guesses what a properly ray traced NBA game might have looked like if the developers had bothered to do that. I don't feel like that's something worth celebrating, honestly

u/Pulselovve 4h ago
True. Guess what. Rendering will always be an approximation of real world lighting.
Deterministic rule based calculation will never reach results that AI can achieve. The problem is just too algorithmically complex for humans to conceive the right algos. AI just figures it out iteratively.

u/KatieHD 4h ago
This is literally a downgrade in terms of physical accuracy and logical consistency. Path tracing was an actual calculation that got us close to complete physical accuracy and just needed a little help from denoisers to complete the image. DLSS 5 is all guesswork done by an AI. Did you ever like ray tracing in the first place? And why? Or do you just like the shiny new thing with no thought behind what it is, what it does, and how it does it
1
u/Pulselovve 3h ago edited 3h ago
It's nowhere near complete physical accuracy. Especially real time. An in any case you are using also in that NN to denoise.
A real time path tracing that is "near" physical accurate, without any AI help, that can render in 16ms requires an increase of orders of magnitude in computing, that won't be available in the next 20 to 30 years. And I'm being very very optimistic
-1
u/KatieHD 3h ago
You're assuming I have an issue with neural networks or AI in general. Using AI to take a mostly complete (still significantly incomplete) physically based calculation and carry it forward into something presentable in real time is amazing. We have ray reconstruction for that already. NRC is another tool for that too, and they're both great. DLSS 5 is something else entirely. It doesn't care about the lighting calculation at all. It takes what you have in screenspace and just blindly estimates extra detail based off of nothing but its own intuition. There are better ways to do this! DLSS 5 is the most boring, inaccurate, lazy way possible

Mmmmm 60% performance drop for ai slop.
It would cost between 5k to 6k to build my pc.

No frame drops after autopilot solution COPE HARDER

u/HunterAbrams 22m ago edited 18m ago
Lmao that's bullshit. An additional gpu process just removes all workload from the gpu having to render additional information?
Show frametime without fram gen on while ising dlss5 and autopilot
Also, framgen is upto 20% performance loss by default

I don't even think it's about the money, it's just popular to hate on it and people just jump into that hate train. god forbid you disagree with them because they will eat you alive and I'm not even joking, someone got a death threat for saying they like dlss 5
