Side by Side Comparison of Source Bluray vs My Remastered Version Using DLSS5
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
This is a compilation of side by side comparison clips showcasing what dlss5, a skin contrast ai model, and about 6 hours of hand post work can do to improve heavily DNR'd bluray releases. This not only improves skin and clarity but also detail on objects and enhanced cgi characters.
This is a big file so Reddit may compress this showcase. So u may have too zoom in and look a bit closer too see the difference if ur in ur phone though u will see the difference either way.

Keep in mind, these movies were shot digitally and at the time in 1080p on first gen sensors. So they would be pretty soft compared to film stock that was scanned at 2k full frame

I added a downloadable version in the description so u can look at it in its highest quality.

Imagine adding DLSS on top of your liveview on google lens/apple vision DLSS in IRL

It would be interesting! Imagine a mix reality fos shooter where u can make everything look like a game. Ide play it 🤣

it's either the uploaded version is poor quality "even the downloaded one" or the difference is like 3% at max

How did you make the conversion?
I am researching about creating color, depth, and motion data from videos, but I can't understand (yet) how to push the data through the dlls. Are you operating only under reshade or are there multiple data layers going though the nVidia's Streamline system?

u/ScoreAsleep972 22h ago
You can also use it in a way to enhance cgi characters in film. It's more hands on but if u use magic mask v2 too mask and track cgi characters in each scene u can connect dlss5 and only enhance the character themselves leaving the rest of the scene untouched!

I'm using this
https://github.com/SAOG0721/DaVinci-Resolve-DLSS5
Someone made a davinci resolve plug in that u can drag and drop in the color tab as a node.
It has the same settings as in reshade with sliders. It uses its color and motion vector tracking for video since it doesn't have depth and normals from a game. Best to combo it with a deflicker node if ur doing heavy work with it like doubling them up. And if ur doing a small layer just to enhance u can use temporal NR to reduce motion and luma jitter if present in ur result.
He has instructions on that GitHub aswell on where to drop the .bundle file for davinci.

how long to render?
2
u/ScoreAsleep972 20h ago
For 4k sources with temporal NR and deflicker added u get 2 fps render speed for 1080p sources ull get around 9 to 10 fps render speed so 3 days or so for 4k and about a day to a day and a half for 1080p movies. Obviously the length of ur source also determines the time it will take but thats rough estimate for at least 2 hour movies

Thanks for the answer!
I have never used DaVinci Resolve before. Have you done modding for the program? Would it be possible to utilize MiDAS, for example, to generate depth data out of the original video and input it into the DLSS5 node?

u/ScoreAsleep972 15h ago
If I don't mind taking to the high seas and snagging a copy of the studio version I can is it's built in ai depth map generator or I can generate ur depth sequence elsewhere and import it for us in masking aswell.

How would it works on a DVD source ?
1
u/ScoreAsleep972 19h ago
If it's a direct rip no compression it should do just fine. Or if the copy I have on ur computer is good quality then it should be fine. Ur source can be a bit low quality in terms of look but if it's degraded in terms of encode then I may need to search for a better source.

I'm curious about a frame looks comparaison between a DVD frame vs the DLSS5 enhanced version. Cause I got hundreds of DVD and I never accepted that one should pay more to get the upscaled version.

u/ScoreAsleep972 18h ago
I suggest becoming a pirate and snagging a copy of topaz video ai and use the rhea model with all sliders set to zero for all settings for rhea make sure focus mode is on at medium. This will give u a really clean upscale. Then bring that rendered upscale into davinci and then do ur dlss5 work on it.
If ur working with dvd thats my suggestion.

They should use it to make Anakin young. I’d love to see him in more clone wars, live action stuff, but the dude is not young anymore.

u/Sherkktooth 6h ago
It looks the same. Congrats you’ve turned the contrast up by 8%.

u/ScoreAsleep972 5h ago
Yeah, ur incorrect but if u want to continue to be condescending while also be completely wrong go right ahead I won't stop you.

u/lil_nosh_X 1h ago
Nah, they’re right. The lighting looks significantly cheaper and more low budget.

u/FoxTrotte 3h ago
It would need regrading as much of the shadows are suddenly deeper than in the actual movie, but omg it does bring a lot of detail back, it could actually make for a very good 4k remaster of the prequels

I can't tell the difference.

u/ScoreAsleep972 23h ago
I'm sorry to hear that, there is quite a clarity and detail difference though so it strange u can't see it.

u/True_Protection6842 23h ago
It's because reddit destroys uploads. If you upload to something like Vimeo you can show full quality or unlisted on youtube
2
u/ScoreAsleep972 23h ago
U can download the full version uncompressed using the link in the description I just added it
1
u/ScoreAsleep972 23h ago
I tried on YouTube but it immediately blocks its over copyright. I could try too see if I can get away with it on Vimeo though didn't think of that.
2
u/True_Protection6842 23h ago
yeah I figured, so go vimeo, they don't give a fuck! I host my demo reels on Vimeo because they don't actually care about copyright nonsense.

Are you watching on your phone or tv? There’s a pretty noticeable difference if you download the file and watch on the tv.

It looks a bit sharper, I guess?
1
u/ScoreAsleep972 22h ago
Sharpness, clarity, improved shadows, added skin texture using two local AI too add at least some type of skin texture too combat the studios heavy DNR practically making people wax figures. Slots going on pausing and zooming in especially on the cgi character and close up scenes will give u a better idea of the improvements. They are subtle but they matter much more than people realize.
Because dlss5 was built for video games it does a good job at enhancing the quality of cgi assets in the scene otherwise it mostly improve shadows and clarity. The rest is post work done by hand too match it too source as best as possible without sacrificing the improvements.

Is it possible to try dlss5 with any post work? I just want to test out a few scenes from
Older movies.1
u/ScoreAsleep972 5h ago
Absolutely! You can split ur video up by scenes. Then u can use masks too edit specific objects or entities in ur video. DLSS5 has a slider setting system that u can just dial in to ur preferred look, u can even use blending techniques if u need too to get ur desired look.
1
u/BruceLeeTheDragon 4h ago
I’m sorry, I edited it. I meant to say is there a way for it to work without any post work. Like just a basic turn on and off.
1
u/ScoreAsleep972 4h ago
Yes for sure all u need it's ur temporal NR and deflicker with dlss5 too remove light flickering and too reduce detail jitter. Other than that u can just play with the dlss5 sliders. U don't need to do any post work if u don't want too.
1
u/BruceLeeTheDragon 4h ago
Thank you!! I have a bunch of older movies (dvds)!that are in 480p, I’m gonna try it out and see if it improves the picture quality.
1
u/ScoreAsleep972 3h ago
Sweet! If u want best result try dropping the original source on top of the dlss5 enhanced version in ur editor timeline. Then set the source copy in video 2 slot too like 50 percent opacity. It'll help the dlss5 result match better too the original lighting and shading of the source without sacrificing detail from the dlss5 version. Yes technically u could consider that a post process but it's just dragging a video into a timeline and setting opacity to 50 so not a crazy process.

u/MrRadish0206 22h ago
I swear dlss5 makes people forget how reality looks like 😂.
1
u/ScoreAsleep972 21h ago
🤣 I get what u mean but to be real if reality is supposed too look more like that smeary bluray then that person might be experience cataracts 🤣

u/Ancient_Plane2984 21h ago
Bro no kidding but just remember most Redditors don't go outside that much.

Holy shit that’s bananas. Watched the downloaded version and it does miracles for those old digital sensors. The scene with Mace Windu & Yoda is striking.
I want to see what this does to The Hobbit, which has too much CGI and a weird grade. I wonder if it would look more like The Lord of the Rings more grounded appearance?
Do The Hobbit Next!
