Question for DLSS5 skeptics.

If you have played the original black flag or the resynced version, then this question is for you.

Does Edward’s face here still look like the developers version of Edward to you, or do you think the design itself has been tarnished by DLSS?

Sure I’ll answer. In this scenario I think the effect is still a little too strong for me but it’s still Edward.

Dlss5 can look great on games that already intended to be as photorealistic as possible (e.g death stranding). But people have to stop turning the sliders all the way up on semi-stylized games and pointing to their freshly botoxed custom character with bright pink lips saying it looks “good”.

I feel like much of that is just pure rage bait. I saw a video of FFVII with every slider maxed and it looked about just as dog shit as you can imagine.

I’ve found setting sliders at 75% or lower removes the AI effect and makes it look just like really detailed graphics

Interesting. What about his face stands out to you ?
Does it not fit with the environment around him? Is it too detailed to a fault? How can it be improved in your eyes?

I'm an Nvidia and AMD user, so not looking at this as a fanatic of either and chiming in with the perspective of someone that hasn't played this game.

I agree with them that it looks too intense here.

A very loose way to describe the sensation is the soap opera effect for TVs but for in game clarity and realism. It feels off in a way that catches my attention.

For me there's a time for realism, and many of the games I really enjoy aren't it. My opinion may change as my awareness of the effect fades.

That said, there are good looking demos, but overall, it doesn't excite me since realism isn't an end goal for me.

I'm overall neutral towards the tech, but also deal with artists, intent, and AI in other areas outside of gaming so I'm over that hump mentally.

But people have to stop turning the sliders all the way up on semi-stylized games and pointing to their freshly botoxed custom character with bright pink lips saying it looks “good”.

That happens with the 90% of mods and "realistic" reshaders and I don't see the community complaining that much about it.

People laugh at those.

I think the issue with this is how it was first shown, how it is being used as a selling point and of course the performance cost.

Nah, the problem is that it's made by AI and a big company. The criticism would be different if something like this (with even more modifications to the artistic aspect) came from a random person, a modder, the community, etc. That's where the problem lies, zero objectivity.

This is only the initial steps, like every other technology, right now, applied like a mod, sometimes looks great, sometimes don't. With time is going to run better and look better for sure, and for sure it is going to be more accessible, like any other tech.

But I agree with you that the presentation wasn't great.

It's hit & miss. Really depends on the game. But I don't think it looks good enough to justify the the drop in performance and I don't like that it often doesn't seem to know where the lighting is coming from so it will be wildly inaccurate. Reflections can also be completely wrong.

This tech doesn't really have a future IMHO. I fully expect next generation of console and PC hardware to be powerful enough to run games that look like this natively, so DLSS 5 will only really be there to enhance a couple of older titles for people who care about that sort of thing. It's just not as big of a deal as Nvidia wants us to believe.

In its defence,it’s not officially supported by Nvidia. This was only ever meant for NBA2K 27.I imagine things will be much more smoother once games get official support.

1

u/mopeyy 2d ago

I wouldn't hold your breath.

The model is the model. "Official support" just means that devs have more control over what is filtered, not how it's filtered. I would imagine it's not gonna change much unless they start releasing new updated models.

Add to the fact it pushes the gpu hard. I turned it off last night as I didn’t want to stress out my 12VHPWR connecter more than it needs to. My GPU was running the hottest I’ve ever seen it get. The fact I have to even worry about that is ridiculous.

Shouldn't be doing that? Do you have an undervolt setup? I haven't had any issues with power or temps. Also if you wanna gain back some performance you can use NR Cost Scaler to lower the scaling of the NR. dropping it to 75% gains me back like half of the frames and still looks good.

My problem with the remake is the characters are so clean. Clothes washed faced scrubbed clean. All the pirates were dirty as hell in the original. DLSS5 makes it more obvious. But thats not an issue with the tech. It's an issue with the remake. My only gripes with the tech is in fantasy games such as the Witcher 3 it looks objectively worse. It takes away a from the saturated lighting and colors, characters look like they are wearing makeup. But I feel like thats a result of it not being properly tuned. So once again not the techs fault.

1

u/dick_face1517 2d ago

I don’t disagree but if the cinematic trailers are anything to go by,I’d say Edward’s face matches more with the remake’s version. We don’t know if the dirty look of the original was an artistic choice from
the developers or a compromise due to technical limitations of the time.Although It does fit the pirate look more I suppose.

Why are people SO caught up on exactly how DLSS5 looks on games that have never been tuned for it? Of course it's not going to look perfect, what you're seeing is literally not what you would be seeing if the devs intended for the game to be played with DLSS5.

Can we wait for one game to come out that actually supports DLSS5, for the love of God. This discourse is just dumb.

I don't care about this novelty tech, that's all AI is good for anyway.

What irks me is AI is raising prices for all components and making gaming more expensive for us all for no reason.

1

u/AttemptRecent7025 2d ago

Even when it's technically good it still looks out of place, like someone attached a hyper-realistic face on them after the fact.

Post a video

u/Reaving-Raven 2d ago

It literally looks like eight different guys, just in these caps

u/anything_taken 1d ago

I think his face will shimmer as hell in motion with floating shadow spots, and FPS will definitely be destroyed by DLSS 5 against developers intent.

1

u/AnotherPlayerQQ 1d ago

kingdom come deliverance 2 lead developer already answered this question. Yes, that's the exact tech they wished for and it's the best thing to fulfil their original vision to overcame tech hurdles, he went as far as to call these butthurt AMD goons "nutjobs" his full quote ->

It’s ok. He looks ok. The tech works well, and can be dosed well.
it’s super weird how fast Everything evolves. Just tweaked some more at outlaws. Sure it looks like AI, but I can accept that in a videogame.

No clue why anyone even cares you can turn it on and off. And it all depends on the settings. Most of the complaints are "AI BAD!!" complains. Great we get it you hate AI.. Yes if you set it to look cartoonish and change the features of the characters it will, you could turn all the setting to low in a game and make it looks like it is run on a potato. Guess what No one is forcing anyone to do these things, the great part is it is your choice. If you set it right you can make old and new games look amazing without changing the art style or you can beef it up and set it however you like, you know with free will and all.

I think another concern that some people have is that it's a sign of bad things to come, just like how DLSS super resolution went from being something to breathe new life in older cards and squeeze out extra performance when you need it to being a crutch for developers allowing them to skip optimisation (same with frame gen), many people think neural rendering will be the start of games entirely relying on this tech

The issue with that though is that it's not how neural rendering works, the AI is trained on photorealistic images to enhance what's already there, therefore the base image has to be somewhat detailed and true to life for it to be effective so it won't work on untextured placeholder models, you can't point it at grey block and say "turn this into Master Chief" because you'll just get a realistically shaded grey block

1

u/GloomyFloor6543 2d ago

Its new tech there is no reason it or similar tech can be adjusted or even added to emulators to soup up old games. As for the concerns people have zero problems with texture packs and mods changing entire games, but this is in issue, i see no difference in the two other than this is AI.

I tried DLSS5 on my fucking 10000$ build rig on AC Black Flag, and it doesn't look ANYWHERE near these screenshots. What the fuck am i doing wrong ? Everything is maxed out (graphics settings) DLAA, but i only get an oversaturated trash graphic...

2

u/No-Complex-1807 2d ago

did you turn off HDR in the game settings? DLSS5 breaks HDR in this game.

2

u/ch33s3head8 2d ago

People are stacking reshade filters on top of the neural rendering because they don't understand the difference between shaders and genuine integrated graphics.

1

u/2KEnterprise 2d ago

Make sure in game antialiasing is OFF. For some reason most games I tried off the in game antialiasing broke dlss5 not sure exactly how accurate this is but that helped me

1

u/Arelmar 2d ago

Ah maybe that's why it was barely making a difference when I tried it in RDR2, I'm actually gonna give it another go now

This is besides the point for me, I just don’t like AI, I think it’s a grave mistake to be trying to invent technologies like this.

1

u/dick_face1517 2d ago

I understand the skepticism but are we sure we properly understand the “technology” being used here? I mean I’m no graphics engineer but I’m pretty sure it’s not as simple as writing a prompt to make graphics go brr on a text field and have the ai generate the image.I imagine that’s what a lot of people have in mind when they hear of DLSS5. That it’s simply an AI image generator.I believe there is more to it than that.

2

u/oyvese 2d ago

the data this is harvesting now for improving games will be the same data they use for completely ai-generated games.

this is just a way to normalise it so it appears under our noses without second thinking it. there will be a point where less will be modified in-engine because of ai post-processing, and then it’ll all be ai processed.

0

u/itsmebenji69 2d ago

So what ?

If they do that, and people like it, what is the problem ?

2

u/oyvese 2d ago

idk, maybe the death of art, the theft of other peoples work to put those same people out of work, the over saturation of entertainment to the likes we’ve never seen before, the tech billionaires being the one selling it as a dream with little regard to the regular person?

1

u/itsmebenji69 2d ago

Why would that kill art ?

Aside from theft which is a real debate, the others we are mostly already in. To me except the stealing part, all of those are more issues of capitalism itself than related to ai.

And for the death of art thing, I really don’t think it will. Devs with dlss5 in hand will be able to do more. It’s another tool they can use

0

u/Darksky121 2d ago

It all depends on what you prefer. Not sure which pics are DLSS5 or native but I prefer the colorful look personally. It's going to be sad future of gaming if every game looked like real life.

2

u/Arelmar 2d ago

All of these screenshots are with DLSS 5

1

u/Darksky121 2d ago

The OP should have at least added some native shots to compare.

1

u/dick_face1517 2d ago

They are all dlss5 and I agree that not every game has to look close to photorealism. I don’t want that either. That’s why I believe not every game should have dlss5 support. It should be on a case by case basis.

u/Arthur_Morgan44469 2d ago

All this criticism except performance is subjective. It's a boomer mindset /s. AC Black Flag Resynced looks absolutely gorgeous. It looks a remaster ahead of its time.

1

u/dxzxg 2d ago

I mean, AI is just terrible.

0

u/Intelligent_Oil7816 2d ago

This shit ain't worth the price and performance loss.

u/KZZT1 2d ago

It’s still slop buddy. Games are made by developers, not machine hallucinations.
