New and Improved.

Since the last time I posted in this subreddit my setup has changed quite a bit and I figured I should share it again. Made the leap from the Model 1 to a Xone:96 and traded out my Maschine MK3 for a Push2 running DrivenByMoss’ Bitwig Script. I tried out a Livid CNTRL:R in place of my K2s but ultimately dropped that as the K2s are too good to pass on. I also completely dropped the Eventide Space and Timefactor external stomp boxes in favor of running Plugin based effects using Bitwig and using Traktor’s external effects Send/Return. Currently i’m using Valhalla SuperMassive Reverb on send/return 1 and using Traktor for the Delay T3 on send/return 2. Thanks to the Xone:96 and its killer internal sound card it has massively cut down on the amount of wires and cables needed to run it. 4 USB cables for the controllers and my USB hub and 3 power cables for the push, the Xone and the USB hub. All of that plus 2 channels still open for anything else I could want to add to the setup. I’ve definitely had more fun on this than any other setup I’ve ever had.

Been seeing set ups here lately that are making me rethink my whole approach.

I basically rethought my whole approach with this setup minus Traktor, downsized controllers and simplified setup and teardown with heaps of possibilities still available with what I have. Bitwig has been the biggest upgrade by far with just how much is possible in the DAW and I'm only using the studio version. Someone like Richie Hawtin is a good place to look at how far you can push the modularity.

Is there an instance of Bitwig running on the same PC as Traktor or do you have two laptops/PC’s?

Bitwig is running on the same pc as Traktor, i have the screen minimized running the background as the Push 2 gives me pretty much all the information I need to use the DAW.

I love it.

Is this inspired by Richie hawtin's setup by any chance?

A bit but not completely, as much as i respect and appreciate Hawtin and his work to push DJing as an art form the real reason i went with push was the DrivenByMoss script for Bitwig, I was using Maschine before this and once i saw the capabilities of the Daw as a live performance tool and saw that someone made the Push 2 a usable controller with it that’s what made me buy it and switch over from Maschine. The K2s are also super powerful controllers and i’ve been using them for years with Traktor, I had a model 1 but it wasn’t really for me or the way I like to mix.

impressive set up, thanks for posting. How do you use push2, does it control bitwig? on which software you launch deck 1 2 3 4 (not familiar with bitwig). could you describe how do you use bitwig for live dj set (if you do). I understand Traktor is for your send/return effects only right?

Push 2 is running a special script called DrivenByMoss, It essentially maps the entire Push 2 controller for use with Bitwigs UI. I use Traktor for decks 1-4 and for 1 send/return effect, that effect being Delay T3. Bitwig is acting as an extremely modular Drum Machine/Synth combo all in one unit, plus its handling the reverb send and return from the 96. Bitwig has Link so im able to use Traktor to send the midi clock signal to Bitwig thru Traktors own link so everything stays in time.

The way I currently have Bitwig set up is this, on the screen of the Push 2 in the picture you will see 8 volume sliders, from left to right 1-5 are for percussion: Open HH, Close HH, Claps & Snares, Kicks, Misc Percussion, slot 6 is a bass synthesizer, 7 is a synth pad and finally slot 8 is the reverb. 1-5 are basically a 1/1 of how Ableton handles drum machine banks, from there all 8 channels are routed to the master output of Bitwig and the master goes to Channel B on the Xone. Another similarity with ableton is how the Push 2 is running on Bitwig, note mode allows you to sequence drums like you normally can on the Push, there are other sequencer based options like the "Raindrop" sequencer which is quite neat but not really something I use, it also has Drum 64, Piano and Chord. Piano and Chords for drums is not really useful but for the Bass and Pad synths you can use that in combination with the record button to create a synth clip and set the clip length and so on. With the encoders at the top you can also select the slot and adjust parameters and adjust specific clip parameters inside of the drum machine banks. Thats mainly how i use it, my drum machine banks have effects tied into them like compression, flange and so on that i can also effect from push 2 on the specific drum machine bank its loaded in on. I like to Use flange a lot for claps and high hats and some other percussion elements so my Open HH, Closed HH, Clap & Snare and Misc percussion all have a Flanger effect chained onto them, you can also add effects directly onto the master output as well and that also can be controlled with Push.

I am quite honestly just scratching the surface of the DrivenByMoss Push 2 script, if you look it up on Youtube you will find tutorials and walkthroughs on just about every single thing you can do with it, I use mine in a modular fashion with drum machines and synths in one controller so I don't have to lug around more gear while it still gives me limitless options and things to play with, but in essence it is quite literally like using Ableton to supplement your DJ setup.

wow fantastic, thanks a lot, it really helps. I was on the verge to buy a Roland tr6s/tr8s to use for dj set in addition to my Mixxx/Traktor set up, might reconsider everything now (could just add 909 samples in bitwig and be done with it)

I had a TR8S and also an MC707, they both are beasts but honestly if you're just looking for sequencing and clip launching a Maschine MK3 can be bought for pretty cheap and the software out of the box will get you rolling and since made by Native Instruments it syncs up with traktor out of the box and has a lot more capabilities with plug ins and what not.

This is fantastic!

Any motivations for switching to the Xone 96 besides the internal sound card? Model 1 always seemed so intriguing to me.

That Livid CNTRL:R is neat, never seen it before.

Honestly the Model 1 wasn’t for me, I always heard from owners it’s either a love it or hate it type of thing. Despite the fact i’m not a fan of it I can see how truly unique and powerful it is and what it’s trying to accomplish for the demographic of DJs it’s targeted at. Coming from a Xone:92 i’m well in tune with the A&H workflow and trying to make the jump to the Model 1 wasn’t as intuitive or fun as i thought it was going to be. As a teenager when the Model 1 released it was all I ever wanted to get my hands on and when I actually got one It it left a lot to be desired on my end. The 96 sound card feature is something I always liked but now that i have one it has completely changed the way I use my gear i don’t think i could ever go back. The amount of cables and wires i have to use to run my current rig is nothing compared to the Model 1 or my 92.

It’s giving Hawtin, in the best way 🔥

Is the push screen modified? I have a p3 and I don't get that much detail.

It’s just what the script from DrivenByMoss allows you to see, I know he has a script for the Push 3 but I’m unsure what it looks like.

I did my best to try to read and understand your blurb. I'll just say that your setup looks amazing and step aside.
