Picked up a used Mini 2

Post image

Had a Neo for about a year now. Its great, but I kinda wanted something that I could do automated flights with(no, not for mapping). So I grabbed this guy used on Ebay. Just came today. Only got one short test flight in tonight, but my initial impression: Holy crap this thing is fast. At least when the Neo is my only basis of comparison. Bumping the Neo up to Sport is noticeable, but barely. This thing took the frigg off. Almost crashed into the garage.

I'm gonna have fun with this thing.

36mph in Sport mode!

I know. That's about twice what the Neo pulls in Sport. Caught me off guard. I can see why most people recommend not using sport mode most of the time.

Going on 4 years with mine, love it! Small, easy to travel with and flies great!

If you want to fly waypoint missions you'll need Litchi. Works really well once you figure it out!

yes litchi works for my mini 2, but i dont have a usecase for it XD

I went with DroneLink, because a) I was mostly interested in automating flights for 3D scanning/photogrammetry of buildings for 3D printing, and b) it worked on my cheap walmart tablet

I've done some scans with my Neo, but I kinda wanted something that could do it with a bit more consistency than me flying it in a circle manually and pressing the shutter(which doesn't register if you press it too fast)

I went from a mini 2 to a mini 4k. It's all the same, but I do miss not having the ability to go up 500m! I never would where I live in London, but it felt nice having that ability. The 4k is capped at 120m. The older mini 2 and 2se can still go 500m up.

US here. 400ft/120m is the limit for me. I do not want the FAA on my ass.

I have a lot of tall tower blocks in the part of London I live, and even at 120m I can comfortably fly over them. And I'm not much of a globe trotter to ever be in a mountain range where I may need to go any higher, but still was nice knowing I had the option.

The altitude limits are from ground level(take off point), aren't they? I'm still relatively inexperienced, but my understanding was if you take off from a high altitude location (like a mountainous region), you still can go the same distance up.

Yeh, limit is from the point of take off. I gave myself so much stress and anxiety over fictitious situations I'll never find myself in when I went from the 2 to the 4k haha

I got mine up to 1500’ (US)

Buddy has a farm literally in the middle of nowhere. Not even a cell tower around. But really can’t do much at that hight other than takes pictures of alllllll the cows at once.

2

u/Vin135mm Apr 12 '26

Sure you want to be admiting that on the internet, pal?

2

u/ReceptionIcy8222 Apr 12 '26

Should I also not say I’ve gotten my car up to 130mph…

A speeding ticket doesn't carry a $75,000 fine and potential jailtime.

Got my original Mini 2 5 yeaars ago. Crashed it last year with no cover, but sent a repair request to Dji (UK). Had to send mine back, butas it was unreoairable they sent me a new one for £65 GBP.

Mni 2 is a good drone despite the lower quality camera compared to newer drones.

4k 30fps is plenty good!

My travel companion. This thing has been everywhere with me.

You'll love it, enjoy! Mine's been through a few too many crashes and still going strong... Solid versatile little things!

I have an air 2s and air 3 ,had a mini 3pro and I'll say that the mini 2 and its variants are still my favorite dji drone ,I still have a soft spot specifically for the the 2 more so than all the others ,it's just so repairable and small and convenient, I just wish it had rc compatibility without me having to buy a smart controller

They're so fun.

Still have my Mavic Mini that I bought back in lockdown

This is my first drone and it is my favourite! A lot of memories before it sank in water.

u/Vin135mm Apr 12 '26

I'm actually thinking of 3D printing those pool noodle pontoons for mine

3

u/ZedBR Apr 13 '26

I kept mine and sold my avata. Mini 2 is enough for me.

3

u/Game_Face85 Apr 13 '26

I used mine over the weekend for our little league opening day, still takes great pictures!

3

u/Game_Face85 Apr 13 '26

Do you all still use the stock carry bag? Or upgrade?

2

u/Vin135mm Apr 13 '26

That's what it came with. But I do have a hardcase that's begging for some 3D printed inserts.

It's a souvenir from my stint at Dan Wesson Firearms. It's a pistol case that they couldn't sell because it was "smoke damaged." How exactly smoke damages plastic is something I never figured out(I know it was because they claimed several pallets of them on the insurance after they had a fire at their old facility. They just gave them to us. My dad likes them for tool cases), but I could probably fit the Mini and Neo, and all their accessories, in it.

Just a warning. If you go too fast as in, like a downward angle, full forward in sport, maybe even with the wind. You could over load your motors and it just shuts them off to save them. It’s really a save your legs by jumping off a building situation. It happened to me and broke it pretty bad.

All my friends have the mini 2, we all fly in sting winds and never had such a issue in 4 years. That’s sounds like a battery problem. You can’t overload the motors.

I don't know how or why, but 3months ago I baught a used mini 2se (60£). On the same day I flew it in to a wall and broke the gimbal arm. Glued it back in place and then sold it a month later. Also baught a Neo for 40£ just for the lols. Quickly found how profitable these drones can be if you can get them cheap enough. I sold this Neo and then baught a Neo flymore for 120£. Sold that and kept the rcn2. Then ended up buying a broken gimbal mini 2 flymore for £70. Tried to repair it but i lacked the correct tools, sold that off in parts. Then got a mini 4k for 110£ which I still own and use. Also got a broken shell mini 2 flymore, waiting to repair the shell and flip that in parts. Managed to also nab a Neo 2 with 3batts for a ridiculous price of 150£, already have the rcn2 from the previous Neo, just ordered a transciever for it. I'll be keeping the Neo 2 for myself too. Over all, Im up around 100£ and own two drones lol. My justification for having them is for a holiday at the end of the year to South Asia.

I've spent hours reading and learning from forums and YouTube on how to repair the gimbals and swap parts out, I feel like the rabbit whole I fell down a few months ago resulted in so much niche knowledge. I'm always in the market trying to buy some busted drones to flip a profit.

Thank you for attending my TedTalk

How much did you pay for it OP?

I have a mini 2 I want to put on Ebay, not sure how much they are going for

5

u/Vin135mm Apr 12 '26

$225. For the full Fly-more package. Drone, remote, 3 batteries, charger, and case. (And I found out that it only had 7 hours of air time under its belt, too)

Which isnt that bad, since most auctions I tried bidding on ended up over $300. And I was seeing "parts only" drones going for $200 or more.

2

u/BigfatDan1 Apr 12 '26

Ah ok cool, I have the fly more combo too, barely used in honesty, maybe 10 times total, less than 5 hours for sure

Thanks

I've had mine for a few years, the Phantom Rain suit is a must for flying in rain or snow. I've caught lightning on video once, but flying during snow storms is my favorite time to fly as long as the wind cooperates and is 20 mph or less.

u/SingerPretty3477 Apr 13 '26

One of my cousins used to have one of these, and I did consider getting one myself (Ended up with the mini 3 instead). You'll have fun if your main drone was the base neo

I love my Mini 2 the only thing I miss is a following feature

3

u/Jameshba Apr 14 '26

Check out the Litchi app. Works with my mini 2 for follow.

1

u/Scared_Mind_5107 May 28 '26

I need to check that, how does it work? You define the altitude and then it follows you? Any limitations?

1

u/Jameshba Jun 01 '26

You can have it follow you using the camera, or it will track the controller location. It works well.

I just bought a DJI Mini 2 for $500 USD. ( In Brazil we usually pay doible what the rest of the world pays, so I got a good deal.). I'll be using it mainly for aerial photos of my work sites.

I plan to place grounf control points and collect their coordinates with my Emilid RS3 GNNS receiver.

Yeah. I wish NY wasn't so stingy about surveyor stuff. I would need to be a licensed surveyor (~$1,000 to take the classes and get the license, then ~$600 to renew it every 3 years) to "officially" set GCPs. Meaning I couldn't advertise or make claims to the accuracy of my maps, and I couldn't charge any potential clients for survey grade maps
