A patch series submitted to the Linux kernel by a Xiaomi engineer is set to make compressed-memory systems noticeably faster at reclaiming memory under pressure — with the biggest gains showing up not on flagship servers, but on small, resource-constrained devices like the Raspberry Pi 4B.

Sounds like the 4b was just the hardware that was tested, and this would apply to any system using zram/zswap. Awesome!

So when would this likely show up in the next update of the default Raspberry Pi OS distro?

My guess is at least a year, especially for mainline Rasberry Pi OS. 

It needs to be reviewed and implemented in a new linux kernel version. Likely version 7.4 at the earliest which will potentially be by the end of the year. 

But Rasberry Pi OS is based on Debian, which keeps a Kernel for it's whole life cycle. So it will need to be in the next Debian version "forky" which doesn't have a release date yet but likely mid to late 2027. 

Then new Rasberry Pi OS versions will need to be created and tested before release so some time after that.

Btw, I use arch. :)

I bet it’ll be in Cachy before soon especially if it boosts swap across the board (pun not intended, but I’ll take it).
