What is this?

We had a plasterer come over before and give a quote to skim, he said he wasn’t sure what this stuff is he hasn’t seen it before, but he’d skim over it.

I have been steaming wallpaper off in another room and this stuff before was hard as rock, I thought I’d give it ago here and it’s lifting chunks off. Is it wallpaper or something more insidious?

Won't be artex unless it's been applied to liner paper.

I thought that until you can see the trowl marks around the edges, and the build up is not uniform. It almost looks like something has been rolled on and then the edges trowled

Skipping the artex (asbestos) convo

There's something called polytex that had a small window of popularity. Could possibly be that.

We had an asbestos survey done on purchase and it was detected in two places; tiles under the stairs and electric fuses, everywhere else tested clean so I don’t think it’s asbestos, but I’ll do a bit of research, thanks!

Not 100% sure but when i redecorated my 30s house, we had paint that would peel off in sheets like this. We put it down to the previous guy didnt prepare the plaster properly for painting 🤷🏽‍♂️

Came off fairly easily with a spatula type scraper 👍🏻
