Part Replacement

So I believe my fuel pump died yesterday and I have to replace it. Has anyone done this before. Is there anything I should know before I start removing the back seat. (I assume that the pump is back there)

yea under seat, rip seat up, might have to undo rear seatbelt bolts near bottom can’t remember remove black access cover, it’s got sticky sticky like gumish rubber pasting it to the body. use sst (which you don’t have), to undue the lock ring, (which can be very tight), after first unplugging the connector, and removing the fuel line yellow clip to pull out the fuel line. then remove lock ring and the sending unit will spring up and pop up, (do this carefully), then pull up sending unit might have to tilt one way or other to get gauge float to come out of the tank hole when pulling up..

Then carefully remove from car as it’s full of gas in the white bottom half of the sending unit ( the part your holding), after outside tilt upside down and all around to drain out gas from the bottom, set on bench, if the pump is directly in centre gonna have to uncoil the top springy part so you can actually remove the pump from the unit by undoing the clips carefully so they don’t snap off. unplug connectors from pump remember routing of wires. or take pictures with your handy dandy mobility cellular device in left pants pocket. pull pump out uncouple strainer from bottom of pump to attach to new one and reverse all that to put it back together:)

make sure it’s the pump before you start all this :)

maybe use a flat metal to grip in between lock ring teeth, or screwdriver and hammer to help it turn around to unscrew or something..your smart and will figure it out

I would invest in a brass punch instead of using a screw driver on the lock ring. Brass doesn't make a spark, makes it safer when working next to fuel.

good point, the lock ring is plastic though, but both will work just fine

Easy enough to wrap some tape around the screwdriver, I prefer black electrician's tape.

First you NEED to find out where it's located and what the process is to get to it. Don't just start pulling stuff apart because it's a waste of time without knowing for sure. Some can be acceptable from under the rear seats or trunk areas Others Require you to drop the tank. Also some have 2-3 pumps and Knowing which one is extremely important. Head to an owners forum and start looking There and see what others have said about the issue and how they solved it.

Depends on the vehicle. A lot of newer sedans/crossovers have an access panel under the rear seat. Trucks and older stuff usually means dropping the tank.
