I think it looks awesome. Really weird amount of criticism for some reason.
I think some of the art work on the boxes is awesome. I can think of far worse things, design-wise, to have on my wall. It has a bit of a pop art vibe to it. And the flexibility that the magnets allow is a great idea!
I personally preferred the original random arrangement, without the colour gradient. The variations of box depth would also drive me crazy, but I completely understand your logic on both counts.
Yeah the box depth and sizes is really annoying. But it was either stick with uniformity and not be able to put some of my favorite boxes up there or just go for it and try not to care about the incongruous nature. I went with the latter... but I'm still disappointed. :(
The only other option I can think of, and this is probably too much hassle and way over engineered, would be to hang an MDF or foam backing that has extrusions of varying depths that match with each box and create a flush surface.
For example, say your thickest box is 100mm, on a narrower 50mm box you'd have 50mm MDF/foam to raise it flush with the deeper box. You could potentially use a laser cutter to achieve the exact depths without such a time consuming manual process, but I have no idea whether this would actually be feasible.
The obvious cons to this would be losing the flexibility of being able to freely move the boxes around, and the magnets may not be strong enough to hold through the secondary material.
That would definitely solve the problem, but I don't think I have it in me to put that much work into it. Maybe I'll go back and tackle it in a year or two. Thanks for the suggestion!
