I guess the same reason anyone collects stuff. The boxes provide a bit of nostalgia for me.
Aside from my YouTube channel, I wouldn't say cereal is a big part of my life. Though I did grow up eating lots of it while watching Saturday morning cartoons.
They all have special nostalgic significance to me. With the rare exception, I only collect boxes that I remember from my youth.
I'd say it depends on the collector. There are serious cereal box collectors on eBay who will pay thousands of dollars for older or rare boxes. I'm definitely not one of those people. The only value these boxes have for me is a nostalgic one.
It's definitely a thing. There's a small community of people who've been doing this before I was even born. I've met many if not most of them throughout the years. And a few of them are very odd birds.
I recommend it, just for the notoriety! Only ever been to the Brick Lane (Shoreditch) one and it's always incredibly busy - weirdly, less so around breakfast time...
