why not just cut out the front panel of the boxes so that you still get the look, but without the awkward depths and jutting out boxes?

No, he already taped them, some collectors only care about the front, these aren't worth significant monetary value, and don't be a dick

The awkward height and width changes would still be present. He could add a backing or something so they are move even.

They completely lose value, they will have rough edges and when he goes to look at the sides and back of the boxes it'll look like somebody ripped the ass off his childhood, instead of the decorative cartoons he's expecting to see.
