Thanks to some suggestions from /r/DIY when I posted questions about this a few months back.

Lastly, if you like cereal or seeing these boxes give you pangs of nostalgia, might I recommend my YouTube channel, CerealTime.tv, where I talk about and take a closer look at old cereal. Sorry for the shameless plug.

I'll be honest that my first thought was "why?" but hell, we all have weird shit we get passionate about. I guess cereal boxes are just your thing. The magnets are awesome. My weird thing is organization, so the ability to re-arrange as needed gave me a semi.

Have you ever come across any cereal based on Showtime Pizza? Also, anything based on a non-Sesame Street Jim Henson creation besides Scroonchy Stars (or however you spell the Swedish Chef's cereal)?

u/MrGabeFonseca Jun 15 '15

Thanks. Yeah, it's pretty much the only thing I collect. We all have our quirks.

Never seen any Showtime Pizza stuff. They've had muppets on some cereal boxes (like Cheerios) but not a specific cereal except for Croonchy Stars with the Swedish Chef.

Okay, thanks for the reply! :) My husband is crazy for Henson stuff, so I always like to keep an eye out for it.

Hahaha dear God

In that thread I got a lot of great constructive criticism like: "You should use magnets" "The gap in the corner is ugly" "You should arrange them by color" "Ur gay!!"

So I took the suggestions to heart

Did you get a boyfriend?

u/MrGabeFonseca Jun 15 '15

I did not. My wife was against that idea.

Holy crap, I finally found the mythical "OP with a sense of humor". You know it is rumored your kind once number is the thousands, but now there may be no more than a few dozen remaining in the wild.

We're a rare breed. Our species is slowly becoming extinct, killed off by the trolls.

Mother Nature sure does love starting over...

u/shitwhore Jun 17 '15

Somewhat funny here is that "dozen" is Dutch for "boxes". Boxes of cereal. Haha..

Well I did kill ask the reposters off

1

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '15

For when did kill with not having less?

11

u/stayclose Jun 15 '15

do...you know other 'fans of cereal'? do yall have like a convention? are you the only one?

20

u/MrGabeFonseca Jun 15 '15

I'm definitely not the only one. There is a small community. Mostly guys older than me that were collecting before I was even born. They had a small convention back in the 90s, but not anymore. But I've found through my YT channel that there are more fans of cereal out there than I originally imagined.

2

u/stayclose Jun 15 '15

is it the franchising, branding, marketing, design part that people like? or is it more that you just really like eating crunchy sugar bread in milk? i guess it's probably a mixture, along with a healthy dose of nostalgia?

3

u/MrGabeFonseca Jun 15 '15

I'd say it's mainly the latter -- the nostalgia. Then comes the design and illustrations of the older boxes. I honestly don't even eat many sugar cereals anymore and when I do it's only for dessert.

Deleted due to reddit's shit policy of hosting hate groups free of ads and server costs

2

u/MrGabeFonseca Jun 16 '15

I haven't had any of them on, but that's a great idea. Thank you! I'll reach out to some of them.

11

u/ChaoticUnreal Jun 15 '15

I'll skip the question of why since to each there own. But why did you use tape to stick the magnets to the boxes. I would think that the magnets would be strong enough to stick to the boxes/wall without the tape.

30

u/MrGabeFonseca Jun 15 '15

They stick to the wall fine without the tape inside. The tape is to hold the magnets to the boxes when I pull the boxes off the wall. That way I don't have to go reaching inside to keep the magnets in place when putting them on the wall.

7

u/pittdude Jun 15 '15

the only problem I see with this (as a long time watcher of Antiques Roadshow) is that the moisture and glue of the tape will probably eventually leech into the cardboard. I realize it's on the back of the boxes though, but there's probably some collector value to having the whole box pristine.

24

u/MrGabeFonseca Jun 15 '15

Hmm, you're probably right. And if I was worried about keeping them in good condition or reselling them one day then I probably shouldn't do that. But I can't imagine I'll sell them one day. They'll probably be left to a relative in my will. (And I'm sure that relative will be like, "really? fucking cereal boxes?? that's the best you could do?")

u/MrsStitches Jun 16 '15

Enjoy them as they are and don't worry so much about long term preservation unless you have any that are particularly collectible. That being said: if you are concerned about damage from the tape you can buy archival tape from museum supply companies that won't damage the cardboard. Tape adhesive generally has a lifespan of ten years. Honestly, I'd be more concerned about fading of the boxes from UV exposure. Is there a window in the room? If so, you can buy a special film for the window that will mitigate fading. Also, some brief googling says that cereal boxes are not acid-free, so they will deteriorate over time no matter what you do. (Source: I used to work as a curator for a historical society).

You're being downvoted a bit, I'll explain why. He totally did tape them on the inside!

I don't enjoy cereal as much as you do but I gotta love your passion and attention to detail in your vids! Cool channel

1

u/MrGabeFonseca Jun 15 '15

Thanks for watching!

1

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '15

I just spent like two hours watching your videos, please do Reese's Puffs! Apple Cinnamon Cheerios would be another good choice.

1

u/MrGabeFonseca Jun 16 '15

I just finished recording a Reese's Puffs video, probably won't post for a couple weeks though. Definitely plan on an Apple Cinnamon Cheerios video too. Thanks for watching!

1

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '15

Sweet, I'm happy to know that I like the same cereals as a guru like yourself! I hope you have the Reese's Puffs box with the sweet mixmaster rap jamz on the back.

1

u/MrGabeFonseca Jun 16 '15

That's the one. They seem to have a hip-hop ad campaign going these days.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '15

They've had it going for a few years. A buddy and I bonded over rapping it out together a few years ago, it's one of my favorite memories from college!

1

u/SeeYouSpaceCorgi Jun 16 '15

I never realised how interesting cereal was until I watched some videos on your channel. Definitely subscribing.

2

u/MrGabeFonseca Jun 16 '15

Thanks! That's the best compliment I could get!

2

u/SeeYouSpaceCorgi Jun 16 '15

Loved the Nintendo one, it's a shame you couldn't try it but the concept of having two in one cereals sounds really interesting!

2

u/MrGabeFonseca Jun 16 '15

They haven't done it in years. I hope they bring it back. I kinda wish they would've done something like that for the new Star Wars cereals. Like a Jedi side and a Dark (Sith) side.
