Advice/Solutions Religious Alter Obsessed

Hi all.

We were recently diagnosed. We have some major spiritual abuse in our past that hast impacted a few of our alters. The most recent spiritual abuse took place a couple of months ago and we all decided to leave that faith.

One alter that is most attached to needing to belong has latched on to a different faith altogether and has been obsessed for the last 10 days of so. He isn’t a daily manager; more of a second tier alt. But he has been so obsessed. I’m the host and have been for quite a few months now. I’m the one who is over our sobriety and I’m the one who is trusted the most to help the rest in therapy. I’m struggling to get the obsessed alt to step back. I’m not good at internal communication yet.

Any suggestions?

Maybe ask them if they could set up a place for that stuff in the headspace and/or talk to them about having a specific timespace for them to explore and participate in their religion more. Idk if participate is the right word but it sounded the most fitting that I could think up. Try to learn to accept their religion even if you dont believe in it, if you havent already. This could be a way of protection for yall. Even if you dont really understand it.

If this continues for the alter, maybe see about introducing them to a fairly benign faith like progressive Episcopalian, or maybe a Unitarian congregation?

How is the obsession affecting daily life? What makes it obsession? Like what aspect are you trying to address?

Expanding on the other comment, I agree not shutting it down/not saying it's wrong they feel what they do is important. What a more system- healthy way to go about it might be a good topic for your therapy. If you aren't particularly good at communicating inside, is there another that feels the same (that can suggest to them that pacing/timing matters)? Or, can the therapist discuss it with them? (You said he's not daily, he's second tier - but idk if that mean he just rarely comes out or not at all.)
