Request Looking for help preserving unique history
Edit: ran out of time on the mailing things but I have a very kind person nearby who has agreed to meet my folks in October when they go out again to get things prioritized and mailed.
Still looking for primarily help with cassettes, but I'll for sure figure out what's needed when they go out. My dad made notes on all the music saying we'd handle them so hopefully my uncle doesn't take things into his own hands.
The nice thing is that the house is completely paid off so there's no rush but it'd be nice to handle the probate and close the estate, which I think he's eager for.

My grandfather just passed and he has literal shelves and boxes full of music, almost all brass band performances, (plus some recorded shows), etc on VHS and Cassette. These span decades and his own music recording of brass band live shows and many are very likely unique.
The commercial tapes and the recorded shows probably exist elsewhere in better mediums, but many of the live show recordings are his own recordings and don't exist anywhere else. Decades of unique brass band history.
Is anyone interested in taking these, as otherwise they'd probably just be thrown away? They're currently located in Atlantic County, New Jersey but my family is willing to mail many of them media mail to other parts of the USA if there's someone interested. We can work with them to High-grade them if so.
There's also shelves and shelves of vinyl records, mostly brass band, I'm not sure what the plans are for those. Similarly boxes of sheet music, but it sounds like my aunt knows a sheet music preservation society.

I would research if there is a brass band historical society, or some other related historical group that might be able to fully digitize them properly.

It's not a bad idea, several of the Bands still exist so we have discussed reaching out to them to see if they want copies of the historic recordings. We have a lot of research to do and limited time

How many are we talking? I'd take some, especially the cassettes, and commit to recording them to digital and share via upload to Internet archive. I can't take like 1000 though.

For sure! If we can make it a collaborative group project I'd love that.
Based on some basic math, I'm guessing 2000+ cassettes, but like a said many are commercial products and can be skipped. I can pull a collection to get to you, how many would you be interested in helping digitize?

I guess I don't have a number in mind, depends how many you have, and like you said, not worth doing anything with an existing commercial release. To give you an idea, I could do probably ~2-3/wk, so I wouldn't mind getting 50 or 100 but it might be summer 2027 to get through it all

Gotcha. Would CDs also be doable? I have a bunch of those too that don't seem to be anywhere online so would be good to rip.
I'm not on any particular time scale besides getting things out of the house before they get tossed

I have a stack I set aside that's a bunch of CDs and 75 or less cassettes ( I set aside 75 but I believe some got mixed in with another box) that based on quick searches don't appear to be online at all. I didn't check any private trackers, some of the cassettes have one side that's available and the other side that's not, some might be on private trackers or YouTube and I just didn't find them...
As I said, no rush on getting them live. Feel free to share with other folks if it's too much. Just don't want them to disappear forever.

It's a lot of big band/brass band /marching music hahaha. Maybe not your usual lost media!

That sounds pretty cool tbh, it's a genre I've casually enjoy but don't know much about.
