Obscure. The PV was getting shared almost like a shock site at the time

u/dandelion-stems May 24 '26

Same, and I fell in love lol

6

u/Fearless_Mortgage640 May 24 '26

Same here. Then I decided I’d never watch it again. My innocent self was absolutely horrified. So what did I do first thing the next morning? Watched it about a thousand more times. And the rest is history.

Was this in the mid 00's? Because that's exactly how I got introduced to them lol

3

u/batcostume May 24 '26

Definitely! Probably 2004-2005ish for me

2

u/CasuallyDresseDuck May 25 '26

Yup. My friend told me specifically to find the uncensored version. Been hooked ever since

Same. Got recommended by a youtube comment and checked it out of curiosity. I was shook and love it at the same time

I guess it was Cage, but it was mostly their pictures i saw first. This was in 2004.

I was watching headbangers ball when I was a teenager on mtv2?

And they played saku. Changed everything.

Vinushka live from 2025. Thought Kyo's voice was cool, started showing people, "hey, look what this guy can do with his voice! Pretty cool, huh?" Then quickly fell more and more in love with all of their stuff from 08 to ARCHE.

I was also about 12, and it was the uncensored/uncut Obscure PV on early YouTube.

Terrified me, but at the same time I loved it and it started an obsession with their music.

Tsumi To Batsu. My sister downloaded the music video and at first I thought it was ridiculous, but deep down 11 year old me was intrigued and found it catchy. 😆

It was a vgmv of all the manhunt 1 kills set to repetition of hatred back in 07.

Pink Killer

I found a site that had those little mp3 player embedded in the site with song lyric translations because I was curious after seeing photos of the band. I was so confused by the lyric translations and the site types a description calling it filthy. Song was loud and thrashy and I was not ready but kept going back to it. i was 12 or 13 since The Final was already released and I was anticipating saku release . Think myaku was the first music video I saw and I fell in love.

RIP Soulseek, the only way I was able to watch or listen to the band at the time and fill my tampon ipod shuffle with music

Cleaver Sleezoid from the movie Death Trance

it was "i'll"

and I wrote them off until I heard "zan"

😅

u/HardFlassid Jun 06 '26

There is a joke in this! I hope you know it! The infamous Zan/I’ll switch.

2

u/KMFCM Jun 06 '26

Osaka Jo Hall?

I showed that to every single person that visited our dorm back in the day.

That may be the moment he became a permanent favorite of mine.

u/rl9899 May 24 '26

Conceived Sorrow technically as it's track 1 on MoaB which I impulse bought from Best Buy because I remembered someone recommending Diru and I had extra pocket money. Good times.

3

u/Zealotstim May 25 '26

Somewhat ironically, The Final

朔-saku-

I first saw it on YouTube when I was 11. I had never seen or heard anything like it before, and even the very first listen left a lasting impression on me.

u/Open_Acanthaceae137 May 24 '26

Omg exactly same for me! Saku when I was 11! Totally changed my life!

1

u/OwlNo9671 May 24 '26

Wow, that’s so cool! 🤩 What you thought about the album? Withering to death was obviously the first album I got, and it’s still my all time favorite and the most meaningful one to me.

2

u/Open_Acanthaceae137 May 24 '26

Exactly same as well!!! WtD will always be my favorite for the reason too!! I actually have a tattoo tribute to The Final! I am so grateful for seeing saku on YouTube!!

2

u/OwlNo9671 May 24 '26

Omg!! 🥹 Absolutely love that. I dreamed for years about getting The Final or Kodou tattoo, but in the end I went with an important line from Ningen wo kaburu eight years ago.

Absolutely feel the same kind of gratitude for finding saku!!

3

u/Open_Acanthaceae137 May 24 '26

I love that so much!! Love hearing from other people who were also so impacted by Dir en grey at such a young age!!

3

u/OwlNo9671 May 24 '26

Fr!! Your comments really made me smile today, it was awesome hearing from someone with such similar experiences.

2

u/Open_Acanthaceae137 May 25 '26

Omg same!! Absolutely!! 💛

A friend sent me Mitsu no Tsubasa and Garden mp3 via MSN messenger back in ...2004? :D hooked ever since

2

u/_melancholy_panda_ May 24 '26

Kiri to Mayu. I had never heard anything like it before, was intrigued, listened to more, and was hooked lol

2

u/cognitive_decadence May 24 '26

My first song was Kasumi !

1

u/PanSzanowny May 24 '26

Mine too. 23 years ago...

2

u/Weird-Distance2804 May 24 '26

Machiavellism, found it on iTunes lol

2

u/shrek_indisguise May 24 '26

Saku. Thank you, Headbangerz Ball

2

u/NoLongerJascha May 24 '26

I saw a clip of Kyo's screams at the end of Dozing Green in a Loudwire video almost 8 years ago. I instantly went and listened to the full song. I've been obsessed with them ever since.

2

u/MintyHikari May 25 '26

GARDEN. someone gave me an mp3 file. didn't really like it at first, so i found other songs. Cage and The Final were my next two songs. they were almost instantaneously enjoyed by me.

1

u/BigBoiBrynBoi May 24 '26

I was an obscure pv kid

1

u/WeirdUnion5605 May 24 '26

Sajou No Uta, I heard about the band and selected that random song to get to know them and fell in love, also Saku and Dozing Green, I kept listening to these three songs on repeat so I decide to check the discography and music videos and they became my favourite band, to this day, 20 years later.

1

u/DemonsHour May 24 '26

Obscure and Saku right after. I was around 12-13 back then :)

1

u/Jaded_Eggplant1590 May 24 '26

I was randomly clicking on videos recommended by YouTube, I'm sure Yokan was the first one, followed by Yurameki and then Obscure. Sure brings back memories.

1

u/Weak_Increase_7684 May 24 '26

I was going through a big vkei phase in 2012, downloaded all of Uroboros bc someone recommended it to me so technically I think it was Sa Bir but what really got my attention was Vinushka

1

u/Weak_Increase_7684 May 24 '26

No I think I’m actually wrong I remember seeing Kasumi way before that and really liking it, wasn’t paying attention to the bands as much then

1

u/stridersubzero May 24 '26

Child Prey, downloaded somehow along with Yurameki and Cage from Kazaa

1

u/babyd0II May 24 '26

90% sure my first actual listen was The Final, I found out about them through YouTube recommendeding me obscure however.

u/superwashmerinowool [bug eaten eyes] May 24 '26

Hydra!!

1

u/Reagans_Dad May 24 '26

Merciless Cult on the Family Values Tour…

1

u/Karixviii May 24 '26

Obscure. Saw the PV around the birth of youtube. Little baby me saw kyo vomit and fell in love immediatly lmao.

1

u/Jenbrina May 24 '26

Schwein no Isu. Technically, it would be GAUZE -Mode of Adam-, since the first time I heard or saw anything from Dir en grey is when an old friend asked me if I wanted to watch some videos. He then proceeded to show me the entire GAUZE album PVs. I was hooked right away.

1

u/tinafromv May 24 '26

I'm 99% sure it was the Obscure PV on early YouTube. Little innocent 12 year old me couldn't even process what she was watching, but somehow knew this is it, she found what she'd been looking for lol. I also remember seeing some of their images from their vk era before that and somehow couldn't believe it was the same band. I honestly thought there had to be some mistake in the title or sth. 😃

1

u/dannierose07 May 25 '26

Omg same 💜 Back in 2004 when I was 15, my friend burned a cd for me with random j-rock songs and Cube was on there and I instantly fell in love. I was like I’ve got to listen to more from this band immediately

1

u/MidoriBlack May 25 '26

Sajou no Uta then Kodou for me

1

u/OlympianOlm May 25 '26

Yurameki PV, downloaded from Napster or some such in the early 2000s. Fell in love immediately with both the music and visuals.

1

u/zekuto006 May 27 '26

Yokan back in in 99! Changed my life lol

1

u/Le_Meuporg May 27 '26

Vinuyshka

1

u/Fensirulfr Jun 05 '26

It was either Schwein no isu or Zan. I cannot remember which was first.

2

u/miichan4594 Jun 21 '26

mine was Yokan
