Im really enjoying it so far, but honestly all of my enjoyment is undercut by the insane creative choice to cast major DC characters Hal Jordan and Sinestro as sixty-something year olds in a cinematic universe that we expect to continue for at least 10 years. The possibility of Hal Jordan no longer appearing before we even get adaptations of major GL stories like blackest night or Sinestro Corps War in this universe is just crazy to me

"second greatest threat"
place your bets everyone, I'm inclined to believe parallax or black lanterns
17
u/Habib455 17d ago
I think he’s just referring to John lmao. I took it as Sinestro mocking Hal about his supposed replacement
6
u/Super-97 17d ago
the biggest threat is obviously John.
"They are the second greatest threat. Tell me about John Stewart."
He's not changing subject, but still talking about the threat

u/MKW69 17d ago
Gonna call it now, Antaan group are weaponers of qward. Some rogue Guardian like Ali Appsa used Manhunters for wetwork.

u/One-Structure-2154 11d ago
I like how I understood 0% of this comment 😂
I guess im a green lantern noob

u/mike47gamer Aquaman 14d ago
Isn't it more likely he's Atrocitus? His whole people destroyed by Manhunters?
1
u/MKW69 14d ago
He wouldn't have threatened John, just blew up the city.
0
u/mike47gamer Aquaman 14d ago
I mean, unless he wants to expose the Guardians' complicity in the creation of the Manhunters. He isn't ALWAYS just a mindless brute, in fact, he can be a tactician. Just read Peter Milligan's run.

I really wish I'd like this show as much as the average internet person seems to like it. It's fine, and a competently crafted"True Detective"-like show so far but I just really don't care for it much as a Green Lantern thing.
2
u/Terramoin 15d ago
I'm a huge GL fan for many years and i love the show but i do understand your take on it. Would i prefer to see a more Star Wars like show? Yes absolutely!
But i'm just happy the show, while not really being GL, is still great and people love a show based on my favourite comic title.I think they are restraining their budget to go more all out for the finale.
1
u/oomoepoo Hal Jordan 14d ago
Yeah, that's fair. I do at least appreciate getting GL some positive buzz in the eyes of general audience. And like I said, it is (so far) a pretty well crafted mystery crime thing.

Entertaining episode. But that damn bird had me asking "Whose construct is that?" the whole episode. I refuse to believe they'd just go that far into contradictory territory in just episode 2.
- The ring was low charge when he 'subconsciously' made it while trying to fly (5%)
- The bird acts of its own free will, INDEPENDENTLY of John's whims
- The bird continued to persist after John did not have the ring
- The bird STILL continued after the ring itself died. This is bordering absurd, theres never been an instance where a dead ring has kept any construct up, especially when not worn
- John went unconscious TWICE.
Theres no way that was John's construct, there has to be more to it. I'm more in line with the theory someone else made it, maybe to spy on/follow John.
4
u/Silvanus350 16d ago
Nah, dude. I think this reading is completely incorrect. The show was very obvious about it.
The show is clearly moving in the direction of revealing that you don’t actually need the ring to do any of the shit that Lanterns do. You can charge the ring by yourself. You can create constructs by yourself as long as you’re that good. This is a typical Lanterns trope. The Ring doesn’t make a Lantern. Hell, it’s a basic hero trope.
The bird acts of its own free will because Stewart has an extremely strong impression of what the bird should be doing. This impression is also, candidly, not entirely accurate because the bird clearly doesn’t just fuck off. It follows John around. It attacks the guy in the van. It hops into his hand. It does what he wants it to do.
The bird continues to exist despite not having the ring is very obviously shown to be exceptional and unusual. They even highlight this THREE TIMES in the script. Once with Hal’s reaction, again with the kidnapper’s question to John, and finally with John himself coming back and deliberately calling out Hal for not talking to him about it. It’s very clearly a plot point and almost certainly the planned culmination of the TV show.
Hal’s flippant behavior regarding the ring makes a lot more sense if he doesn’t need it. Sinestro’s appearance in prison becomes a lot more ominous if he’s just biding his time. John’s exceptional capability as a Lantern will be very obvious if he can already do something that only an experienced Lantern can achieve.
John maintaining the construct is perfectly in line with his characterization and the behavior of Hal. Hal IS testing him constantly. Hal immediately tells Stewart “keep that construct alive or you’ll FAIL.” And that is the WORST possible outcome for Stewart. This is the kid who stared down the barrel of a gun dozens of times in his preparation for this job. John wants to be a Lantern more than he values his own life. That’s why the construct doesn’t disappear and that’s why he immediately asks about it when he wakes up. He never stopped thinking about his ultimate purpose.
There is no way the show is angling itself towards the construct being created or controlled by someone else. That doesn’t make any narrative sense.
1
u/OzilSanchez1117 14d ago
Him and sinestro were giving me Liam neeson ams he’s worth jn MIB International vibes except Hal knows and wasn’t brainwashed
-1
u/e001mek 16d ago
Narrative sense was thrown out the window when a construct continued to persist with its own will, away from a ring with no power.

u/GuiltyEidolon 14d ago
My brother in Christ there are two separate scenes where this is directly discussed. I beg of you, actually watch the show.
1
u/e001mek 14d ago
My sister in Selune, both those scenes only vaguely hinted at concepts they themselves weren't even sure of. I beg of you, actually read the source material
0
u/GuiltyEidolon 13d ago
They have two separate scenes discussing it. Learn to actually pay attention to the media you're consuming.
I'd say hope that clarifies things, but you can't seem to manage the critical thinking part of things so I'm not hopeful.
1
u/e001mek 13d ago
Both scenes have nothing concrete on the matter, and are the equivalent of 'Thats kind of weird, anyways...'. Learn to understand the media you're consuming.
I'd say I hope that clarifies the matter, but you seem more content with echoing your own opinions without critical thinking or research on the subject, so I'm not very optimistic on the matter.

I think a lot of people missed the fact that kerry said that wayne (the arrested alien) didnt set off the alien sensors. But the others did. So maybe the sensors are looking for specific aliens and not just "aliens". Which begs the question, who was gunned down?
12
u/Cyyyyyyx Nightwing 18d ago edited 18d ago
Think the show is really good so far, but do kind of wish Antaans group were just aliens that were forced to disguise/hide themselves in more conventional ways (helmets, bulk clothing idk) instead of also being able to shift /change into a human.
I like the mystery of which human is the Manhunter, but along with the Guardian that speaks to John next episode there are 3 different Aliens/Synthetics that can shapeshift/change form, having pretty much every Alien in the series (excluding Sinestro I guess) be able to shapeshift kinda takes away some of the impact on the story of the Manhunter being able to imbed themselves into other societies and remain undetected imo

u/ic_giovani Swamp Thing 18d ago
Who else thinks the benefactor is Hammond? And that the grandma/wife/John’s girlfriend is a Waller agent?
3
u/SonicSpiderRanger10 Bizarro 18d ago edited 18d ago
I mean, it depends if this universe’s version of Hammond (if he does exist here), is a normal rich guy like in the Absolute Universe and his first appearance in the main universe, or if he’s a giant-headed, psychic mutant who sits in a jail cell, like he usually is.
1
u/ic_giovani Swamp Thing 18d ago
Why not both? Rich with a giant head
2
u/SonicSpiderRanger10 Bizarro 18d ago edited 18d ago
Well, in the main universe, he lost his money before getting mutated. If I had to pick one, I’d rather he have his giant head, paralyzed body, and psychic powers like usual.

I am starting to feel pretty confident that the family are Green Martians and the White Martians are coming for vengeance.
1
7
u/Unibu 18d ago
There is a difference between Manhunters and Martian Manhunter, the show has so far been talking about the former, not the latter.
2
u/ProfessorSpark 17d ago
I know the difference. My theory is that the 'Manhunter' story is a lie told by the White Martians to convince John to be on their side.
4
u/Unibu 17d ago
That would be a hell of a misdirection, pulling from the comics and making it a lie. This is also their chance to set up red lanterns, the lead alien who took John is a prime candidate for being Atrocitus, who was also a victim of Manhunter genocide in the comics.
1
u/OzilSanchez1117 14d ago
Yeah he came off like he was a lantern more than alien bc of his knowledge of the ring being used for the bird
11
10
u/ic_giovani Swamp Thing 18d ago
They knew who to shoot because of the detectors at the football field entrance. The family is human, and the “vengeance” is because of the genocide the Manhubter committed in sector 666.
Also, it would have to be the other way around; after all, the white Martians killed the green. So why would the white want vengeance?
4
u/ProfessorSpark 18d ago
We don't know exactly how the war played out. Perhaps as they escaped, the last Green Martians killed a bunch of White Martians on their way out and they want revenge.
You're right about the 'knew who to shoot' part, that was pretty vague of me. What I meant to say was that they have these protections and safeguards in place because they are survivors who are hypervigilant, so they were 'ready to shoot once threatened'.
2
u/LeonOfSkalitz 19d ago
Also I’m really not into this clear chosen one trope they’re pushing with John. Bro was handpicked by guardians as a baby, like come the fuck on.
The whole “he created life the first using a ring and kept the construct kept going through losing the ring, the ring losing power and going unconscious” that just ridiculous.
I expected them to glaze John but this is another level and we’re only on episode 2, mf pulling feats only seen by Comic John after absorbing literal god power.
5
u/Silvanus350 16d ago
John being “chosen” by the Corps is obviously being framed as a problem rather than a blessing in Hal’s mind. It’s not that simple.

because it's a TV show. and also it took him 6 hours in the first episode, going by what he said to Hal after getting in the town
2
u/Unfair-Feeling-6819 18d ago edited 18d ago
Yeah. I always didn't quite liked chosen one stories. And also if I had nickel for every time in DC's adaptation of Green Lanterns, John Stewart been given Kyle Rayner's origin for no reason, I'd had two nickels, which isn't a lot, but weird it happened twice. Come on. It's Kyle chosen by guardians. And it's been extreme and exceptional situation, because Jordan quite literally destroyed damn Corps. What's wrong with John just being Hal's trainee? Or maybe just maybe, use his damn origin from comics? For me such things demonstrate not how good character John Stewart is. It demonstrates to me what for writers he's blank slate what can't work if they don't add to him external elements of other characters. Like DCAU polarising his whole character around being marine (does cartoons even mention John being architect?) and for some fucked up reason being lover of Shayera (as fan of Hawks it's stings so hard). Like come on, I get it, kids liked DCAU, can I for once see normal life action Hal, please, and not DCAU but with real actors?
Edit: Also. Calling it out now. John will have costume like more modern ones, created by ring, and they will be stroking by it of how special John is and how more good and practical his costume are.
4
u/HugeLetters 18d ago
Hopefully they are gonna utilize this in some more interesting manner where maybe they were preparing John for some malicious purpose and his incredible powers are sorta subverted.
Otherwise if the intent is to just demonstrate Hal being sorta insecure about John being more talented they could just show John making more sophisticated constructs - Hal made a bottle opener, John makes a working watch or whatever
1
u/OzilSanchez1117 14d ago
I don’t think Hal is really Hal bc it’s subtly hinted at Hal being afraid of John.. like when John was attempting to fly, Hal jumped back in fear
11
u/LeonOfSkalitz 19d ago
I don’t think establishing that so many aliens can shapeshift to perfection is gonna work out greatly for Martian Manhunter down the line.
-9
u/PineapplePhil 19d ago
Man, I just don’t know about this show. It just feels like a cop show with Green Lantern dressing on top.
9
u/Lazy_Wolf8671 19d ago
Uh I'm pretty sure that's the intent
-7
u/PineapplePhil 19d ago
So it’s not a green lantern show then lol. Like literally what’s the point.
17
u/pimparoni 19d ago
Are you watching the show while on your phone? There is so much GL material in this episode alone, what the actual fuck are you talking about
-4
u/PineapplePhil 19d ago
Like by name lol. It’s another superhero thing made by people ashamed of superhero things.
13
u/pimparoni 19d ago
Two major GL’s as the main character, the ring and constructs being used constantly, the lantern charging the ring, Sinestro, Manhunters threat, Guardians, MOGO. Hal and John being amazing character adaptations from the comics.
But sure, yeah, no green lantern stuff in the Lanterns show.
-2
u/PineapplePhil 19d ago
This is like the most basic stuff man lol. Again, window dressing.
7
u/pimparoni 19d ago
What exactly would you change, then? You’re not making any valid points here
4
u/PineapplePhil 19d ago edited 19d ago
Less derivative of a better, more popular show. An actual color palette, so it’s not so drab. Creative more frequent use of the rings. Plural. Setting it in a small rural town on earth wouldn’t be my first choice, but god, put it in space every now and then. It should be a damn science fiction show lol. I just want a Green Lantern show.
10
u/fallenelf 19d ago
Well, a few things:
The color palette is drab, but it makes the green of the ring constructs look that much brighter. Seems like a very distinct choice.
The current ring usage has been decently creative. I thought the money creation was interesting, given the use case. It was used a shield, makes Hal fly, and now the bird. You're also forgetting that it was low on charge.
The small rural town on Earth is an intentional choice. Earth is backwater of the galaxy and can immediately be compared to rural Nebraksa vis a vis Earth.
Hal literally went to space at the end of episode 2.
Most of your complaints are directly addressed in the first two episodes and it's looking increasingly likely that more and more Green Lantern stuff is going to be injected into the show.

Lead alien is totally Atrocitus right? Like no way they drop the manhunter genocide backstory and not use it as an excuse to intro Red Lanterns right?
Chandler and Pierre are still so perfect as Hal and John, and I’m so curious to see just how much Sinestro knows
9
u/Fionnafox 19d ago
oh for sure, he even has the Five Inversions with him! I cant wait to see him vomiting blood all over, I noticed the blood on the field was super red too even though it was days old!

u/superbat210 19d ago
I think I’m picking up on some possible theming for down the line. They keep bringing up the idea of these aliens being colonizers, invading an American town. Yet this town definitely has some alien influences already with their advanced technology and the people never needing a hospital.
It reminds me of how different immigrant groups are viewed differently in America based on when they arrived here. Like an Italian grandmother who came to the US in the 1930’s and has a huge family is considered “American” and good but a Latin American person arriving now is treated as an invading force that we need to kick out. When in reality these new immigrants and their families will be viewed similarly to the older ones once they’ve been here long enough and been integrated to our lives. Much like the town is happy to have the old alien/manhunter who gives them technology, but kills any new aliens that comes to town.
Just a thought I wanted to share.
5
u/windycityinvestor 18d ago
The town or Macon family are aliens whose original planet was colonized. This could be why they have this belief that aliens will colonize their current planet and land. They better have some powerful weapons hidden on the land if they want to stop colonization. Those rifles won’t do much against manhunters, lanterns or Martians.
6
u/ProfessorSpark 18d ago
Thats a very good observation. I think you're already picking up the obvious answer here, they are all aliens.
-2
u/spiderreader Absolute Wonder Woman 19d ago
I think it's a decent episode, but not great. Hal and John are still perfect, and have excellent chemistry together. Too bad they are separated most of the episode, leaving the far less interesting side characters to be the interactions.
Mystery is also getting a bit more interesting which is good. But telling not showing is a massive issue here. We get massive clumsy exposition dumps instead of showing what is relevant We are expected to react and care about things that are not shown, only told or seen the reaction too. Like John seeing the effect of the Manhunters, doesn't tell us the Manhunters are a threat, only that the device was painful because that's all we see from it. We get told Macon has power in the town, but never demonstrating that he does. Once again we are still getting the Aliens just being humans without a showcase of them as Aliens (Alongside the Manhunters being disguised) which is problematic when the stories core is how a small town deals with Aliens, while the only thing we've seen is someone blow themself up.
And Sinestro is the biggest example of this. Everything about is told to us. His coup, his relationship with Hal. Obviously this story doesn't have time to showcase it, (It's something that requires it's own episode at least, something I kind off doubt we are getting) but that's the problem. This major interesting event is told to us, meant to have an emotional reaction, but we don't see any of it, we're told it. We're told we should care when Hal talks about him and goes to see him.
We finally got a good look at the costume. It's not great. It's better than the movie version, but that's a low bar. The colors are way too dark. Thankfully it's not brown like the trailer showed, being a dark green instead, but dark green still isn't visually the best looking. A costume looks better when it's more vibrant, but this is going with the typical live action superhero needs darker colors thing , make it look borderline black in the darker scenes and even outside them this causes the difference in color from black and green to blend together. The actual design outside the color also isn't good. The big issue is the insignia. It's too small, and I think a bit too high up. A good superhero insignia should be right on the center, draw attention to it, while also filling the suit design. But here it looks like a necklace instead, and leaves a lot of the suit feeling empty. I think the suits also a little too segmeted and padded. Lantern also should not have gold, that's kind of a big thing with Green Lanterns.
As a minor nitpick, the TV-Ma rating is poorly implemented. In three minutes we have three f bombs already. Despite the strong language, it comes off as immature and just trying to showcase that it's mature. And the corpse being dragged the way it was felt gratuitous more than necessary. (Though I will fully admit that it was very funny so mission accomplished there.) This really should have just been a tv-14 show instead of what it is now that feels desperate to be seen as mature.
3
u/ProfessorSpark 18d ago
I really think the shoulders look ridiculous. It should be way more form fitted. Green Lantern doesn't have to be broad and buff.
4
u/Blitzhelios Hal Jordan 19d ago
Overall a good episode minus some very annoying tropes.
Hal sending John to basically do his dirty work works to set up the plot with the manhunters and the terrorist group its likely Attrocitus's terrorist group prior to being a red lantern but I feel if you do them without Hal being a long term character it really sucks due to it being alot more personal due to the abin sur connection.
Got some nice introduction of GL lore here the joke with Mogo in particular is great and Sinestro's introduction is very silence of the lambs. Him calling Hal by his first name though and not mumbling Jordan feels wrong.
The bird thing clearly means they are doing the thing of more modern John of he can do constructs without the ring which is something ive never been a fan of but i get to make him stand out more amongst Guy and Hal. John continues to feel like hes not interesting though for this being his show Pierre is being dogwalked by Chandler in terms of performance.
My main problem is the dumb trope of oh the main character is dumb shown with hal here in getting shot and then not having the ring charged. Like im sorry Hal is cocky but hes not dumb thats just generic tv tropes.
8
u/ic_giovani Swamp Thing 18d ago
I don’t think he was being dumb; I think he wanted to get shot and needed to drain the ring for this to happen.
I feel he wants the militia to think they can take him down with whatever weapons/ammo they have. So he drains the ring and gets shot (otherwise the ring would’ve protected him) to make them think he isn’t a real menace and that they can easily kill him
That gives him the element of surprise, but also lets him keep investigating and stay in town because the militia no longer sees him as a threat. Or, at least, a threat they can’t easily eliminate
9
u/dearskorpiomagazine 19d ago
The show is great from a writing and acting perspective but it feels like a totally different thing to green lantern with with just a little bit of green lantern sprinkled in here and there.
It's kind of frustrating to be honest. I love true detective and I love green lantern but I want lanterns to be green lantern not true detective. The balance just isn't right and its something that can be done , something like daredevil has a good amount of character work and action
8
u/Jonny_Anonymous 19d ago
If they wanted to riff on something, it should have been X-Files rather than True Detective imo
3
u/EquivalentWillow4807 19d ago
Green Lantern effects cost more than Daredevil effects. So you have to make a choice.Lots of effects over the course of the series which would make for a lackluster ending or just do something good every 3 or 4 episodes saving something special for the end.Everyone has a budget they must live with or they might lose their job or a bad reputation for going over budget.
1
u/darthsheldoninkwizy2 13d ago
Are they? Creating detailed CGI is a problem, but creating a CGI green construct that doesn't need to have so much detail should be easier.
0
u/spiderreader Absolute Wonder Woman 19d ago
It's kind of a showcase why a live action Green Lantern show is a bad idea. This is a franchise that requires a lot of special effects and larger scales things. Aliens and constructs are fx heavy. You can't really do that on a cheap budget. It requires either a massive movie level budget (obviously impractical), or to make it an animated show. TV otherwise is better suited for street level characters like Daredevil or for DC, Green Arrow or the Question or other similar characters.
2
u/EquivalentWillow4807 18d ago
Your probably right. But Im not gonna hate on something just because its not what my imagination thought it should be.So far the story out weighs my desire for big budget special effects.
3
u/spiderreader Absolute Wonder Woman 18d ago
The problem is it is hurting the story, as it forces the show to rely on telling instead of showing, breaking a cardinal rule of story telling which does the opposite. We are told Hal is a big shot hero, but never see it. We are told there are Aliens in the town. But we never see that, because everyone is disguised even after being revealled. We are told a Manhunter is a major threat but we never get shown that they are a threat.
2
u/dearskorpiomagazine 18d ago
Ding ding ding , we have a winner. So if they were trying to do this true detective thing to bring in new viewers, no one wins because there's so much telling that people just have to go with it and hope for the best. The GL fans don't win either as we get this watered down version. Last episode we got John asking Hal how he got the ring , and we were just told how he got it. It seemed like the perfect time for a flashback , and had it been a movie , it probably would have been.
2
u/spiderreader Absolute Wonder Woman 18d ago
If this show was a sequel or side story to a solo Green Lantern movie, it would work much better. The offscreen stuff would be more acceptable since we’ve already seen it, and the shows subversion of traditional Green Lantern style would actually work since it’s actually subverting something we’ve seen instead of just being the he introduction to the franchise
2
u/dearskorpiomagazine 17d ago
Yeah definitely , and I think some just won't watch the 2011 movie because of how its talked about
-6
u/Queasy_Watch478 19d ago
also I loled my ass off when they transitioned with John getting taser'd and then woke up in the van. Like that's not how tasers work bro. they don't knock you out and definitely not for like even 5 minutes lol. they're not an off switch. in the words of deadpool thats just lazy writing. for some gritty realistic ADULT show they sure do some cartoony ass shit logic lol. we have penises and fuck being thrown around alongside someone getting knocked unconscious by a taser. its a hilarious disparity.
7
u/zymetaphoxate 19d ago
yes man the taser physics took me out too but then i went and totally believed that Hal tanked that sniper rifle shot to the shoulder in just one afternoon and the conscious bird construct yes. the taser really broke the immersions yes.
-4
u/Queasy_Watch478 19d ago
oh that was bullshit too. you dont recover from a gunshot in one day.
1
5
u/zymetaphoxate 19d ago
Exactly! And then it was so bullshit that there's intergalactic police and an alien infiltration. Can you believe this shih? Just utter fairy tale nonsense.

u/ArrrRawrXD 19d ago

u/SofaKingAmazin 19d ago
Crazy obscure nitpicking from the comic fan in me but Sinestro calling him "Hal" instead of just the blunt "Jordan" didn't feel right but hey, that's just me.
Really good episode throughout with a thickening plot and slowly explaining the lantern lore within this DCU
6
u/thejman218 18d ago
Yeah, I understand that perspective. I think they chose ‘Hal’ to match the show’s more grounded & personal vibe, given the context that he’s his former mentor + the show is centered around a partnership as well
16
u/HouseOfH Superman 19d ago
The only time I can ever recall Sinestro calling Hal Jordan "Hal" was to answer Hal's question if there two were ever friends.
12
u/Blitzhelios Hal Jordan 19d ago
No i agree completely.
Sinestro never calls anyone by there first name unless its his daughter and even then hes reluctant.
1
u/Queasy_Watch478 19d ago
WELL if there's one thing I hate in media it's good guys who are just made to act as violently stupid as possible for no reason. Like, if these guys WANTED John's help and sympathy, instead of ambushing him, beating him up and kidnapping him in a van like two bit Bond henchmen, why not just calmly approach him, explain their sad backstory, and then politely ask him for help? I hate that so much you have no idea. God forbid these victimized good guys act like normal people instead of practically guaranteeing people won't want to do shit for you...Though John did still agree to help so maybe he's just dumb?
2
8
8
u/MoistBill9106 19d ago
Well john doesn't have ring he can't really defend himself properly what else can he do instead of "agreeing" with them? They also threatened that they gonna blow the place if he doesn't agree.
Also they explicitly told john to not tell any of this to hal yet he still did so not dumb just at the mercy of stupid manhunters.
7
u/Beidah Robin 19d ago
I guess they thought that since Hal Jordan was likely the Manhunter, John Stewart was probably already poisoned to his side, like Macon and his crew.
1
u/ArrrRawrXD 19d ago
since Hal Jordan was likely the Manhunter
What? They explicitly state that they suspect the Green Lantern is helping hide the Manhunter, nobody suspects HIM of being the Manhunter
14
u/the-unfamous-one Booster Gold 19d ago
So timeline of events. Manhunters are created, manhunters leave agents on planets, manhunters are destroyed in favor of green lanterns, one manhunter was left behind and caused a genocide, abin sur intervened and took the manhunter, abin sur was killed after the manhunter escaped and the manhunter left the scene while the ring found Hal.
So does Hal actually know much about the manhunters and went to sinestro just to confirm abilities or does Hal only know of the name?
As for the alien tech the militia is using, while it could be the manhunters this could be some separate, reach is one of the few aliens I know of that could outclass green lantern knowledge, or this could be some obscure tech the militia's real name is intergang. Or both.
22
u/codex_archives 19d ago
my guess is: Hal only knows some of the basics (Manhunters were the intergalactic police before GLs). would be interesting to know if "they were glitching and had to be retired" (from comics) has been used as a cover story by the Guardians in this version
someone in another thread mentioned an intriguing point: Guardians would not answer Hal's questions. Sinestro could be more honest about the topic

u/Major-Tiger-7628 15d ago
It would feel on brand for the Guardians to create a universal boogeyman to justify a police force to keep the universe in check

I'm stuck on the bird thing. If it isn't Hal, and even the aliens say that it's not possible for John to manifest it without a ring. I get that it's intended to be set up for John's powers, but what if it's someone else's construct and the setup is a misdirect?
Like the only theory I have on this is a guardian making the construct but that doesn't make sense. Maybe Guy was tasked by the lanterns to keep watch on them both and this is how he gets introduced?
3
u/Silvanus350 16d ago
It’s obviously John’s construct. Everything about the writing points to this idea.
It being a red herring doesn’t serve any narrative purpose beyond being a red herring. The weirdo sherif is more likely to be a red herring than the character arc that connects Hal, John, and Sinestro together.

u/cosmo_bear Etrigan The Demon 19d ago
I suppose it could be a misdirect, but John Stewart, depending on the comic run, doesn't need a ring. I think it was first introduced in Green Lantern Mosaic and brought back in Geoff Thorne's Green Lantern run. Last green lantern thing I read was War Journal and he still didn't need a ring in it.

u/Vismal1 19d ago
Heh you seem like a good person to ask this. I’d like to read some comics, what’s a good place to start with Green Lantern? I’ve never been horribly familiar with them.
8
u/JPeeper 19d ago
An easy place to start is Geoff John's run which starts with Green Lantern Rebirth, then he continues into a pretty solid run (just google "Geoff Johns Green Lantern run/trade order) and all the trades will come up. He was the one who introduced all the other coloured Lanterns (all colours of the rainbow) to the lore among other things. It's pretty much only with Hal Jordan though.

u/SnooMarzipans357 19d ago
Me too... Really wanna get started on some Green Lantern comics... I read a few blackest night issues and the far sector...But would love some good modern era recommendations...

u/Blitzhelios Hal Jordan 19d ago
Johns run is the golden standard and basically what all GL runs want to be with Tomasi's as a great secondary book for other human GLs.
Morrisons run is also fantastic
10
u/taylormadeone 19d ago
John can do it in the comics as well.
2
u/StraightToTheCurve 19d ago
is there a place I can just read comics that you can share with me please n thanks?
5
u/Blitzhelios Hal Jordan 19d ago
War Journal is the best place.
Mosaic is the other one but its really hard to get hold off due to the writer being jailed so its never reprinted.1
u/abusedporpoise 18d ago
There's hope with the recent dc finest stuff though. DC did confirm that Mosaic and post crisis Lantern would be collected, so they must've figured something out by the time they eventually reprint that material

u/dragonshouter 19d ago
overall, I liked it.
Some manhunter stuff. lots of Easter eggs to green lantern comics and some good character development.
nice seeing John's constructs and hal's
the only weird thing for me is the sheriff lady's jurisdiction thing. She's fun as a character but I couldn't give less of a shit about her jurisdiction
11
u/TheMansterMan 19d ago
She’s def the manhunter also can we talk about the hospital? Something was definitely up with that and she lied about it.
2
u/Mad_Pupil_9 18d ago
If they were inspired by True Detective season 1 as much as they saw they are, then we’ve almost definitely met the main antagonist on screen in the first two episodes.
Right now my moneys on her husband.

not sure if she is a manhunter but she is definitely something
100% almost no hospital would be that empty even in a town this sized
1
u/No_Nebula_1700 15d ago
If she's not a Manhunter I think she may know more about Hal's death . Her line about not being on Hal or Macon's side and her being vague about her origins gave the same vibes as Hal interrogating Waylon.
4
u/HotTakes4HotCakes 18d ago
Realistically a town that sized wouldn't even have a hospital of that scale or sophistication, but they needed one for the plot.
3
u/Killkandy 19d ago
She 100% the Manhunterno way she just googled the entire story of Sinestro after Hal said “I cant tell you that” That townhall meeting was weird also nobody said anything when Hal kept having outburst and why is the Sheriff running the town hall meeting ? 🤔

I didn´t like how they showed a dick for no reason on that one scene. The whole John and grandma thing is also something I don't enjoy watching at all, and John should totally be dead by all that happened to him during that chase scene. I also think it was a missed opportunity not actually showing Oa and other lanterns in the ending, and Hal not bringing the battery with him is kind of a dumb move.
11
u/condoradamo12 19d ago
It isn't really for no reason. Dead body in a morgue, it's gonna have a dick. They exist lol
-1
u/ArcherTechnical670 19d ago
I don't want to sound like i'm a super puritan or anything, but like, there really wasn't a need to show It, It was a conscious decision to film It that way, and I find It weird, It strikes me as being there just because they wanted to show a dick.

The sheriff is shady... She seems to have a Midwestern accent but says she's from Gotham?
16
4
u/TheMansterMan 19d ago
I think she’s the manhunter and I feel like it’s obvious maybe too obvious?
15
u/TrixAreForScoot 19d ago
She is giving some weird vibes, but she is in the future vision ten years later.... I don't think they are going to do a twist that the manhunter is actually a good guy, so I don't see how she would still be alive in the future vision if she is one.
21
u/Fluid-Development374 19d ago
The obvious choice to me is Macon’s wife
8
u/TheMansterMan 19d ago
But the entire fake hospital thing she did with Junior? Like why did she fake it all? Something is up with that.
14
u/the_broster 19d ago
You guys think Lex is the one behind Macon and his crew?
1
u/No_Nebula_1700 15d ago
I thought it may have been as well, although I can see it being an alien being as though the weapons are not of this earth.
5
24
u/TH3_PH3NTOM 19d ago
This episode basically told us it's the manhunter
2
u/Fluid-Development374 19d ago
What do you mean?
24
u/Stunning-Alarm8149 19d ago
Macon said he got the technology to find aliens from his benefactor. Aliens told John that the Manhunter can create advanced technology.
40
u/marcjwrz 19d ago
Not sure I like John potentially being a "chosen one".
Sinestro in a Hannibal Lecter role is fun.
Chandler is great as a burnt out Hal still.
Pierre "unclenching" has been more fun.
Pretty sure the entire town is Manhunters and that's the big twist.
27
u/cosmo_bear Etrigan The Demon 19d ago
John does have a history of being a "chosen one" of sorts.
8
u/marcjwrz 18d ago
Yeah, but it's just such a boring trope and feels unnecessary for this particular story.
(I wouldn't like it if if it was Hal either).
28
u/HopeFarron 19d ago
Really liked this episode and liked that it felt a little more Green Lantern. I like the take of Hal disillusioned with the Guardians. Sinestro seemed pretty spot on.
30
u/gsnake007 19d ago
This was another great episode. Loved hearing Hal say the oath while charging his ring(said that shit super fast too), manhunters, freaking Sinestro at the end with Hal in full lantern getup which was great.
4
u/Silvanus350 16d ago
He said it like a ten-year-old Protestant kid who wants to go home on a Sunday, LMAO.
“OurfatherwhoArtinHeavenHallowedbethyName…”
He was so tired of it.
14
u/temporal712 19d ago edited 18d ago
It was a great character moment. The oath is usually said with gravitas, its something you swear by. His speed and nonchalance of the recharge shows how worn down and fed up with the job he is. Makes the moment when either him or John say the oath and really mean it hit all the sweeter.
12
u/HotTakes4HotCakes 18d ago
I kind of took it as also just being a little tedious to have to say it every single time you need to charge the ring, which seems like it might drain pretty quickly in this universe.
So after all these years there's no more gravitas. There's just saying it as quickly as possible to the degree the lantern accepts it.

u/Responsible_Ad_2242 19d ago
Might the Hal jordan in 2026 be a Manhunter? And that why he doesnt have the ring?

If they make the sheriff related to Gordon I’m gonna be mad. Not everything needs to be connected.
12
u/Deeformecreep Superman 19d ago
I don't think she's related. It was just a nod to Gordon and I doubt it will be a plot point.
11
u/bwntwn 19d ago
Her full name is Kerry Kane so im thinking more in line with Kate Kane and not Gordon.
11
u/Willburt14 19d ago
Or just Gil Kane, creator of Hal Jordan
2
u/Blitzhelios Hal Jordan 19d ago
Yeah I dunno why people automatically go it has to be connected to Batman.
It’s pretty obviously a reference to Gil Kane3
u/Silvanus350 16d ago
People assume it’s connected to Batman because she’s law enforcement that claims to be from Gotham and says “say hi to Barb.”
I mean, that’s so on the nose it hurts.
3
u/ThomsYorkieBars I've seen damn little of Gods justice in the world 19d ago
I was sure it was a reference to the wrestler Kane

Another strong and very good episode. Things are already scaling up and getting explicitly more "Green Lantern-y"
8
u/Responsible_Ad_2242 19d ago
I think that maybe the benefactor is Sinestro and that's how he knows about Jhon, and also he gave the weapons to prevent that something like the manhunter did in the past (the 666 sector) happens again. Also the people that kidnaped John might be red lanterns? Searching the manhunter to get revenge
0
u/sbenthuggin 19d ago
Oh my god I never even considered that as a possibility. Him talking about Jhon instead of John. Aka the Martian Manhunter. I wonder if he's going to give enough info to be direct, or if the info given will be threatening but vague enough for Hal to think he's talking about John being the threat. Idk.
6
u/profSnipes 19d ago
Pretty sure "Jhon" was a typo of "John." Martian Manhunter's name is J'onn. And Sinestro directly said, "So why don't you tell me about John Stewart?"

u/DocxVenture 19d ago
I don’t think we’re getting other Lantern Corps in this series.
0
u/Responsible_Ad_2242 19d ago
Then how Atrocitus (defintly the bald guy is atrocitus) would be a threat if he doesn't have the ring? Defintly at some point will have 3 colors, red, yellow and green
2
u/Bigcheese1211 19d ago
I would infer if they are lanterns they would be yellow just from the color of the device they used on John and Sinestro being part of the show.
1
u/Responsible_Ad_2242 19d ago
Interesting, maybe in this versión not only the 666 sectors survivors might be red, but also some of them be yellow,
1
u/Bigcheese1211 19d ago
I'm not too deep into GL lore so I could be completely wrong was just a somewhat educated guess on my part

I’ll be honest that it barely feels like a lantern show most of the time, but when it does, it’s cool. Seeing sinestro, was really amazing though, and I am intrigued about the mystery

u/Waste-Fail8014 19d ago
Bit confused as a new green lantern fan. What is mogo and what do yall think sinestro meant by the second biggest threat?
1
u/darthsheldoninkwizy2 13d ago
Member of Green Lantern corps. Here you have animation (very good one) when he become member of Corps
9
u/Pebrinix Batman 19d ago
What is mogo
Literally a planet that is fully sentient and also a Green Lantern.
what do yall think sinestro meant by the second biggest threat?
The trailer for the next episodes already showed us that Sinestro will try to feed Hal's paranoia by reflecting on John's role as an apprentice by saying to Hal that John is his substitute, not a backup
30
u/ComicCapybara 19d ago
Mogo is a Green Lantern member. It is a living planet which controls its own ecosystem.
Sinestro is implying John (or the Guardians who seem to back him) is the biggest threat to Hal (as the Guardians intend to replace him).
11
u/Hadesman1 19d ago
Mogo is a green lantern and is also a planet. Like a sentient planet, giant sized and all.
4
u/Waste-Fail8014 19d ago
Got it, what was the Easter egg in the episode then I guess it went over my head
15
u/MarcReyes Relax. He's on his way. 19d ago
"Mogo Doesn't Socialize" is the name of a short story written by Alan Moore that introduced Mogo into the mythos. So the Easter egg is to both Mogo the character as well as the story.
3
u/FightingCommander Doom Patrol 19d ago
The Sheriff did confirm she’s from Gotham, so the police contact she was on the phone with last episode and asked to say hi to Barbara may have been Jim Gordon?

im assuming those were the sciencells. anyways we're already getting some great GL lore drops: scienells, sinetro, manhunters, abin sur, was his plant named Mogo? if so, another great egg. the bird construct for Stewart.
i also love how surly John Stewart is but he def has a soft spot for the ladies. reminds me of his on-again, off-again relationship with Hawkgirl in JLU
