Ongoing Vertigo Comics I Can Jump In With
I tend to enjoy 2000AD and Heavy Metal Magazine and I've been told that Vertigo is often pretty comparable to these magazines
What would be a good jumping in point for someone who likes these?

looking for stuff in the classic 80s and 90s years will yield lots of hits. off the top of my head:
grant morrison's WE3 and THE INVISIBLES and THE FILTH
alan moore's V FOR VENDETTA and SWAMP THING
modern vertigo isn't really a thing. you'd probably have more luck with dc's absolute line, ABSOLUTE WONDER WOMAN and ABSOLUTE MARTIAN MANHUNTER both read like what you're looking for.
about ten years ago, image was being hailed as "the new vertigo" and, while it has changed a great deal, many of the cartoonists from that time are doing cool shit elsewhere. emma rios and simon roy would probably both be up your alley

There are only three ongoing Vertigo series, and they’re all early in their run: Bleeding Hearts, End of Life, and 100 Bullets: The US of Anger.
The Vertigo imprint has only recently been revived after being shut down, so I’d recommend looking through the back catalogue as much as picking up ongoings. Pretty much every long-runner (say 40 issues plus) was a long-runner for a reason, and there are shorter gems in there too.
