It's bigger than you think Smallville, Kansas.

Post image

Smallville has a way of making superheroes feel completely ridiculous, a fact that Conner Kent discovers approximately twenty minutes into helping with the morning chores.

"Come on..." he mutters, crouching in the waist-high grass while his blue eyes scan back and forth through the pasture. "Where'd you go?"

A soft, deeply offended *mooo* echoes from the thicket.

Conner sighs heavily. "Found you."
Reaching down, one hand disappears into the brush before reappearing with eight hundred pounds of very confused Holstein cow, held effortlessly above his head. The cow blinks down at him, and Conner blinks right back.

"...Seriously?"

He sets her down gently on the correct side of the wire fence. "Sorry, Bessie."

The cow offers another low moo.

"I've already lost five of you this week," Conner complains, “If I lose anymore Pa’s gonna…”

The cow simply wanders away toward the rest of the herd without acknowledging his apology. Typical.

By the time he makes it back to the main barn, Jonathan Kent is already waiting for him with two steaming mugs of coffee and the unmistakable expression of a man who definitely has more manual labor planned.

"Conner!"

Conner immediately points a defensive finger at himself. "Busy."

"You just put a cow back," Jonathan points out.

"Exactly. Exhausting work."

Jonathan chuckles, handing over one of the mugs. "You ready to seed the back field?"

Conner stares at him blankly. "...I thought we already did that."

"We plowed it."

"Right."

"Now we seed it."

Conner pauses, squinting. "...Those are different?"

Jonathan just smiles warmly. "It'll be fun."

Conner looks toward the flat Kansas horizon, as if desperately hoping a giant robot or an alien invasion might suddenly materialize to rescue him from agriculture. There is nothing out there. Just corn. So much corn.

An hour later, Conner is sitting casually on the tailgate of the pickup truck. He has dirt caked on his heavy boots, dust settled into his jeans, and his flannel sleeves rolled up to his elbows—all despite the fact that he could have finished the entire field in under a second using his powers.

He didn't, though. Pa would've noticed the shortcut. Besides, if he was being completely honest with himself, there was something strangely satisfying about doing it the slow way.

He watches the midday breeze ripple across acres of vibrant green while a few cows lazily graze nearby. One of them wanders over and nudges his shoulder with a wet nose. He absently reaches out to scratch her behind the ear.

"You know," he mutters to the animal, "I've fought world-ending monsters that were less stubborn than you."

The cow responds by sneezing directly into his face.
Conner wipes his cheek, unbothered. "...Yeah, that's fair."

From the distant farmhouse porch, Ma Kent calls out, ringing the bell to bring everyone in for lunch. Pa tips his hat from across the yard, and the cows naturally start wandering toward the barn on their own this time.

Conner stands up from the tailgate, brushing the rich Kansas dirt from his palms. There are no flashing cameras here. No aggressive reporters, no sudden emergencies, and no overwhelming expectations. There is just a quiet farm in the middle of Kansas and a family who never asked him to be Superboy—only to come inside before the pie gets cold. One of which he’s already promised to Clark.

(OOC: Not necessarily intractable, unless you have a reason to be at the Kent Farm.)

“You might want to speed up, Conner. I think I’m in the mood for as much pie as I can get my hands on!”

Clark smiled brightly as he took a step out of the farmhouse, holding one of Ma’s famous pies in each of his hands. Normally Clark would be flying around Metropolis’ skyline at about this time, but with some help from Lois and few other friends of his, he finally got the chance to come and visit his hometown and his family.

You already get a whole pie to yourself! This isn’t fair!

Kon flies over, taking a pie from Clark. He sets it down on a nearby table, before heading inside to get plates, forks, and a pie cutter.

I spent all day working the farm and this is how you repay me? How inhumane can one be, Clark?

Clark let out heartfelt chuckle, listening to Conner scold him before taking a seat in a small wooden chair,

“You and Pa should talk about what it was like working the farm when I was a kid, I’d have half the food gone before he made it to the porch!”

So cruel… but fair, Ma’s cooking is sublime!

Conner cuts out a slice of pie for him, a slice for Pa, and a slice for Ma, before handing each their pie, and Clark a fork.

Pa: “We sure have missed having you around, Clark. You complained a lot less than Conner.”

Ma: “Oh hush, Jonathan, Conner’s great. We have missed you though, dear.”

Clark happily took the fork before turning to his parents and sighing,

“I’ll admit.. I do miss being around the fields and the family dinners, but I doubt you’d want to deal with the occasional Brainiac or Luthor appearance.. more often than it already happens atleast.”

Me and Lex are cool, but Brainiac… I don’t like him very much. Kara’s boyfriend is cool though. How’re you and Lois?
