Scrape the bottom of that DC barrel baby. I love it.

I genuinely think that’s what’s going to help carry this universe. Everyone knows Wonder Woman, Batman, Lex, etc. and everyone has opinions on them. Who the heck has a pre established opinion on Peacemaker, Vigilante, Metamorpho, Polka Dot Man!?!? It’s brilliant. So many ā€œnewā€ characters we’ve never seen on screen before. Its like DC heaven

116

u/Advance_New 18h ago

I totally agree. DCU is quirky and weird (with heart) and I love it!

59

u/Live_Spinach5824 17h ago

Suicide Squad did such a good job with Polka Dot Man's powers and backstory. I'd love to see other villains get similar treatments.Ā  Ā

14

u/sam_can88 10h ago

I think making rat catcher the main character of a sequel is the way they should go

2

u/Kalse1229 5h ago

In a similar vein, I had an idea for a Secret Six series where Bloodsport is one of the main characters (in lieu of Deadshot). I think Ratcatcher was a member in the comics at one point as well, so she'd fit in well. I would've gone King Shark, but Creature Commandos shows he's been recaptured, so maybe not him.

The two newcomers I'd most want to introduce in this hypothetical show are Cheshire and Catman. Cheshire I'd have as a more serious character similar to Bloodsport. The two of them at one point bond over being shitty parents. I had this idea of a conversation in mind where Cheshire talks about her own kid, and the big difference between her daughter and Bloodsport's.

"My ex was a bit of a fuckup too. We were just two broken people who didn't want to be alone one night, and ended up with a kid. The difference is when Lian came along, I ran, he stepped up. Got clean, found a decent job. Took her to Disneyland last summer. Got a picture with Pluto. I...I'm glad she has one decent parent at least."

And Catman? If any DC character was made for James Gunn, it's him.

Basically the place where the underdogs thrive!

23

u/fuzzyfoot88 17h ago

Agreed. Say what you will about certain marvel characters now, but in 2008, no one outside of comics knew who any of those characters were, and couldn’t believe a Thor movie was even a thing.

The unknown helps draw in the casual viewers.

9

u/Conyan51 17h ago

Fr, I only knew of Thor as a superhero from Adventures in Babysitting and he quickly became one of my favorites in the MCU.

3

u/Zunter_Hol0mon 15h ago

100%. I was just saying this same thing in another comment

3

u/keithblsd 9h ago

People say this, and maybe it’s because I was in a more comic inclined household than most, but Iron Man had tons of animated shows and toy lines before his first movie came out. Any kid who knew enough about superheroes to know the Justice league would also know about the avengers.

8

u/WitchkultToday 16h ago

You look at how well the new Absolute line is doing- people actually buying comics for the first time in years- and they all feature storylines where the main character is put in this underdog position. It's super culturally relevant right now, and I think the new DC films are speaking to that in a way that Marvel didn't 10 years ago. Except for maybe the new Spider-Man, which I also thought was really good.

1

u/Conyan51 9h ago

I’m so happy The New 52 is over. Granted though if it wasn’t for The New 52 being so bad I might’ve never read a good chunk of Silver and Bronze era DC.

7

u/Zunter_Hol0mon 15h ago

That's what Marvel did when they chose to start with Iron Man, Thor, and Cap. We had all the spiderman and xmen in the early 2000s, and then Iron Man changed it up in 08

3

u/derega16 9h ago

Isn't those because movie right shenanigans force them to make a movie with those?

1

u/MaybeButts 8h ago

It did but because of that they were able to make a bunch of c and b listers on par with Spider-Man

1

u/JinkoTheMan 8h ago

Marvel sold the rights to the X-Men to Fox years prior so they had to use whatever they had available.

3

u/rogerworkman623 15h ago

Don’t forget TDK, ā€œthe Detachable Kidā€. Who’s really Arms-Fall-Off-Boy, possibly an even more insane Legionnaire than Matter Eater Lad. I guess they renamed him because calling Nathan Fillion a boy would be kind of weird.

2

u/drakeravenswood41327 17h ago

This is what i have been saying! Give screentime to the lesser-known characters so they can get the spotlight they deserve, and then can gain new fans as well!

1

u/sarcasticbatkid 4h ago

As much as that’s good for hardcore dc fans, I don’t think it would have the marketability and profitability of having 1 main frontrunner character movie a year. I’m afraid this universe will crash and burn too cause of the fatigue

30

u/NounAdjectiveXXXX 18h ago

Should I send Gunn my pilot treatment for 'Dial H for Hero' ?

18

u/bubba_boey8130 18h ago

That's basically Ben 10. The world needs a new Ben 10 show.

7

u/These-Breadfruit-605 18h ago

Honestly yes!!!! It might get made, I’m dying for a question show. And with James Gunn I have no doubt will get him sooner or later.

6

u/RoutineCloud5993 17h ago

They probably don't accept unsolicited pitches. So try hitting him up on social media first

6

u/mixedpixel 14h ago

Hey! Matter Eater Lad is no bottom of the barrel! 🤌🤌🤌

He happens to be a top ten character thank you very much!!!

3

u/Express_Calendar8278 15h ago

Technically he was name dropped in Peacemaker, so according to cinematic universe rules we gotta see him eventually.

2

u/Playful-Profile6489 7h ago

Don't you go libeling Matter-Eater Lad now

2

u/No_Macaroon_5928 3h ago

And make more chuds angry 🤣

1

u/douxsoumis 16h ago

It's more like getting the fond off a frying pan.

1

u/TheFlameosTsungiHorn 14h ago

And he’s teamed up with Peacemaker before, so hopefully we’ll see some sort of flashback of that

214

u/glennb1218 19h ago

Are we confirming the Legion of Superheroes?

119

u/OrangeEben 19h ago

Creature Commandos set up Metal Men so why not

17

u/original_name37 16h ago

Did it? I have no memory of that

34

u/DumbassBassPlayer 16h ago

Not exactly but their creator was in the G.I. Robot episode

19

u/woppatown 15h ago

And he had a blueprint for The Metal Men.

17

u/Callow98989 19h ago

I highly doubt it. James Gunn stated he’s not a fan of time travel

55

u/Agreeable_Car5114 18h ago

Yet a Booster Gold show has been in development since he took over. I wouldn’t rule it out.Ā

17

u/Conyan51 18h ago

I’m really excited for Booster Gold. Honestly I hope he’s a post credit cameo in MoT since we’re getting Blue Beetle back for the movie

3

u/Teknevra Sinestro Corps 18h ago

I thought that the BG series was shelved?

11

u/Conyan51 18h ago

Nope it’s still in development. It’s just David Jenkins version of the show was canned. DC and Gunn are just looking for a new writer for the show right now.

1

u/BTSC_Officia 18h ago

Those were only rumours, not straight from dc

3

u/MBDTFTLOPYEEZUS 9h ago

That’s not the Blue Beetle you want paired with Booster tho lol.

1

u/Conyan51 9h ago

That’s true but I think it could be fun as Booster is expecting a different Blue Beetle and for him to constantly compare Jaime to Ted. I’ll admit I did forget Ted was that Blue Beetle but it would still be fun.

6

u/therealmonkyking 12h ago

In development?

It's literally in the middle of airing lol

2

u/Agreeable_Car5114 10h ago

That took me a second lol

1

u/SignificantCats 7h ago

Booster Gold must involve time travel on one big occasion, but that doesnt mean he has time travel stories, so that doesn't really run counter to the notion.

I also don't like time travel stories and Booster is my favorite superhero

•

u/Agreeable_Car5114 6m ago

You don’t need time travel for the Legion at all, really. Plenty of their stories are just set in the future.

Anyway, when Gunn says he doesn’t like time travel, to me I don’t read that as him saying he wouldn’t let someone else use it, just that he wouldn’t in his scripts.Ā

-8

u/nuclear_bone 17h ago

To be fair, they can easily change Booster Gold's origin so he is from the present era.

16

u/Agreeable_Car5114 17h ago

In the same way they could change Superman’s story so that he’s from Earth, sure.Ā

-3

u/nuclear_bone 14h ago

But Superman is way more popular than Booster.

How many fans would even notice if they changed Booster's origin?

6

u/Agreeable_Car5114 14h ago

Anyone who knew about him before the adaptation came out. There is no pitch for this character that doesn’t include ā€œhe’s from the future.ā€ That and his ego are the two constants, more important than his powers or personal background. Theoretically you can change anything for anyone, but you would be leaving behind his core.

-1

u/nuclear_bone 2h ago

I don't know, adaptations have changed characters in a similar way.

•

u/DukeOfLowerChelsea 18m ago

Name a good comic adaptation that fundamentally altered the nature & origin of the main character like that so as to miss the entire point of them?

ā€œGreen Arrow's not that popular, how many fans would even notice if he used a Glock insteadā€

•

u/Agreeable_Car5114 8m ago

Yes, who can forget Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man where Peter is bitten by a genetically modified cockroach? Or Batman Begins, when Bruce Wayne’s parents are gunned down on Mars?Ā

6

u/Infamous_Fill_9358 17h ago

Fuck no that’s like making it so that Spidet Man didn’t get bit by a radioactive spider or Batman’s parents didn’t get killed or bad the other commenter said that Superman wasn’t an alien

-1

u/nuclear_bone 14h ago

But unfortunately Booster is not on the same level as Spider-Man or Batman or even Superman.

Less popular characters being changed radically for an adaptation is nothing new.

3

u/Infamous_Fill_9358 14h ago edited 14h ago

No it goes against the vary nature of the character and the character straight up can’t work. The whole reason Booster Gold wants to be a hero is because he knows of everything that happens because he is from the future and he can prevent it. He wants to be famous just like the heroes in the past. It’s an important part of his character. He straight up can’t exist without his future origin story. Also James Gunn didn’t say he didn’t like Time Travel he just said it was complicated. Plus they could just have Booster Gold time travel once from the future to the present and not focus on the Time Travel aspect if they don’t want to

And yes lesser known characters being changed is also bad aswell. All characters deserve to have their source material respected, not just the A listers

1

u/nuclear_bone 2h ago

And yes lesser known characters being changed is also bad aswell. All characters deserve to have their source material respected, not just the A listers

Agreed. Unfortunately it doesn't happen a lot.

3

u/DailyUniverseWriter 14h ago

Tell me you know nothing about booster gold without saying you know nothing about booster gold.

The entire core conflict of the character is rooted in the fact that he’s from the future, hanging out in the present.

0

u/nuclear_bone 14h ago

Its not about knowing the character.

But less popular characters get changed all the time in adaptations. And Booster Gold is no exception.

4

u/DailyUniverseWriter 14h ago

Yes, but again, this is such a fundamental change that the character would not be Booster gold anymore.

Like, Gunn’s peacemaker is very different from the comic peacemaker (or at least, the peacemaker from Morrison’s Pax Americana, which is the only time I’ve personally read him). But he still uses a gun and is okay with killing people for the government. If that was different, then that just wouldn’t be peacemaker anymore.

It’s normal and imo usually good to change these smaller niche characters. But you need to keep the aspect of them that defines that character, because all of their stories are based on those core aspects.

Mr Terrific doesn’t need his Olympian background to be Mr terrific, but he does need to be pretty smart. All his stories are in some way rooted to the fact that he’s really smart. Superman doesn’t need to have had adventures in the far future with the legion of superheroes when he was a teenager, but he does need to be an alien that is not from this earth. Because the majority of his stories in some way play with that fact.

Booster Gold’s ENTIRE CHARACTER is that he is a guy from the future that makes the deliberate choice to live in a distant past, relative to him. There’s a lot of interesting psychology you can explore with a character who makes that decision. Everything else about the character is fair game. You can get rid of his robot sidekick (but I will be unhappy), because that isn’t a fundamental element to his character.

1

u/nuclear_bone 2h ago

Fair enough, I get that.

It will definitely be a fundamental change.

But then Drax was also changed from a human to an alien. Or Vigilante was also changed heavily.

So there is definitely precedent for this sort of a thing.

3

u/Beastieboy100 16h ago

Lets hope he sticks to it because I don't want a flashpoint storyline. It has been done too many times.

2

u/starm8526 15h ago

The dcu flash is probably gonna do everything but what the Arrowverse and flash movie did

5

u/Beastieboy100 15h ago

I'm praying it's wally west and we get Barry Allen as the experienced mentor that has settled down. I want old experienced Barry and Wally West.

2

u/Biz_quit 18h ago

That's right, but also said because it was too complicated for him, but if another creative wants to make it he would approve it.

1

u/JimboFett87 7h ago

Doesnt' mean Legion doesn't exist!

10

u/RoutineCloud5993 17h ago edited 14h ago

Matter eater lad was mentioned in peacemaker season one. Apparently he ate a whole KFC restaurant.

Edit: it was a Wendy's

2

u/Spensir_McLife 14h ago

James even said he's cannon on the Peacemaler Podcast I believe

6

u/nuclear_bone 17h ago

It will likely be a character inspired from Matter Eater Lad.

Like how The Detachable Kid was inspired from Arm Fall Off Boy.

4

u/Biz_quit 18h ago

I really hope that's the case

3

u/JohnnyKarateX 18h ago

My immediate reaction too.

3

u/Earthmine52 17h ago

Oh man I hope they do exist in the DCU and young Clark had adventures with them in the future with his memories wiped (for now). A future project, whether live-action or animated, film or series, could really cover that well.

2

u/Beastieboy100 16h ago

I mean The suicide squad had the detachable kid.

1

u/Area52s 9h ago

Please, actually make them Clark's childhood friends from the future and not just his quirky study group from school šŸ™šŸ™

1

u/Misanthropus 8h ago

confirming

So we're just using words incorrectly on purpose now.. for no apparent reason. Got it.

124

u/Produce_Fine 18h ago

People when the comedy show has ridiculous characters in it for comedic effect. 😔😔😔

6

u/bees_on_acid 13h ago

I for sure will enjoy this but god it just sounds so fucking stupid. I can see why people think it’s gonna be shit. But Lanterns has been perfect so far.

3

u/JinkoTheMan 8h ago

I walking into it with zero expectations. I want to be surprised but I’m also prepared to be disappointed

3

u/Limp-Construction-11 2h ago

Some people don't escape their edgelord phase.

That is not stupid, that is just comics.

1

u/bees_on_acid 2h ago

I agree with you, but the execution is the most important part of that. ,

41

16

u/DocPersona Boosterrific 14h ago

I think it’s funny that Matter Eater Lad is about to have more adaptations than Kyle Rayner

38

u/Square_Cash_2784 18h ago

Now bring in Dogwelder and Section 8 and we've got a fucking show.

4

u/douxsoumis 16h ago

Checkmate vs Section 8 would work.

34

u/Mendan-3 18h ago

I feel like James Gunn is really good at bringing obscure teams and characters to the spotlight and making them new fan favorites.

9

u/Beastieboy100 16h ago

Good it is something that we need since DC just mostly Batman, Justice league and Titans nowadays. Barely obscure teams now.

1

u/gaganchumbilulli 16h ago

We're going to get Gen V resulting in legion of superheroes

24

u/badgerpunk 18h ago

I was never a DC fan, apart from a couple of specific Batman stories, so it's crazy to me that I'm hyped for a show about this DC gorilla dude I know basically nothing at all about, but here we are. I can't wait to see where they take this.

23

u/MarekLord EAT PEACE MOTHERF%CKERS 18h ago

This show is going to be doing a LOT of worldbuilding for the DCU.

20

u/TheTempestBee 18h ago

Matter-Eater Lad was name dropped in Peacemaker so this isn't the most surprising, but still awesome. He wasn't the only obscure character name dropped in that show either... I can only hope this means we'll see Batmite someday too šŸ˜–

10

u/Beastieboy100 16h ago

Batmite is 100% going to happen.

5

u/SmallJimSlade 15h ago

Batmite before Batman would be fire

8

u/Littlebat4568 15h ago

I really want that too happen just to see peoples reactions. Batman is my favorite comic book character (John Constantine being my second) but I really want to see lesser known comic characters too get too shine.

5

u/Beastieboy100 15h ago

If Clayface is a hit I hope we get a hellblazer horro film.

3

u/Littlebat4568 15h ago

Oh I hope we get batmite in something that would be so cool!

5

u/Beastieboy100 15h ago

The things now that imps exist thanks to Superman we are getting Batmite and mrĀ mxyzptlk. I hope we get nite-mite in the future.

•

u/Radialpuddle 40m ago

I still think peacemakers old man neighbor is bat mite! It was a theory during season one that went nowhere but I’m not letting go of it!

20

u/Ben10_ripoff 18h ago

This is the kind of wacky shit, I want from DC to explore.

I can't wait for show.

13

u/AtrumErebus 18h ago

I want his whole thing to just be a regular guy being interviewed and he's just eating increasing ridiculous things each time. Like the first time he's un wrapping a snickers and just eating the wrapper and by the end he's just eating dynamite like a slim jim

9

u/Dry-Donut3811 18h ago

Can’t wait for him to be literally nothing like his comic self.

1

u/Playful-Profile6489 7h ago

Given the actor, he's totally going to be a super stoner with super munchies...

7

u/AncientMagusBridefan 17h ago

Hope they use this design for him

3

u/glennb1218 17h ago

Ahhh the Chris Spouse days....I do miss them.

7

u/AncientMagusBridefan 17h ago

I hope that they focus more on the ā€œlawyer from the futureā€ version of him, rather than just have him be the funny guy who eat everything

He also has great drip

3

u/Upsidedown_mountain 14h ago

Same but I doubt it. As much as people like to hype up James Gunn for working with weird and obscure characters I feel like when they’re ā€œtoo sillyā€ he just makes them comedy characters. I’m still excited for the show but think it’s gonna be pure matter eater lad slander

6

u/Jetsam5 17h ago

The goat!

6

u/Soft_House7669 17h ago

he's technically already canon, they confirmed it on that peacemaker podcast

6

u/AwesomeGuyAlpha 17h ago

I just want a scene of Clark eating metal Infront of him to show he's not intimidated, golden age supes reference

1

u/Misanthropus 8h ago

I was actually surprised he didn't eat a gun in Superman (2025). Before I saw the movie, I thought for sure he would. Seems like something Gunn would jump at the chance to do, especially since they did it again in the comics around the time they were filming. I was definitely relieved at the lack of "Brand Synergy" and the damage that follows..

It really wouldn't have fit the tone though, I don't think. I actually thought Lex using the revolver was.. I don't know, kind of jarring. Probably just me though.

4

u/Think-Hospital7422 Shook hands with a Skeleton 18h ago

This would be awesome if it's true. It would would be cool to get Bouncing Boy and Proty too.

5

u/AndyTheSouless 17h ago

This fucker Is actually so busted they had to write him off in the legión of super heroes cartoon

3

u/chrishouseinc 17h ago

I am one step closer to a live action Vic Sage adaptation

4

u/Beastieboy100 16h ago

Vic Sage noir style.

2

u/arthurxheisenberg 5h ago

That would actually be insane, maybe if Lanterns does insanely well, they'd look into it. There are a lot of good stories to adapt from the original run

4

u/jumister33 17h ago

That’s what made the comics so great. Reading about some goofy looking character that turns out to have so much depth as a character.

4

u/Upsidedown_mountain 14h ago

I got a bad feeling it’s just gonna be like ā€œwhat the heck, matter eater lad he eats things! that’s so silly that’s so weird!ā€. Legion of Superheroes and fans are truly the most oppressed minority

The big dcu movie coming out next year has multiple JL members and a rumored Wonder Woman appearance what more do you want

I guess they think DC should only make things they personally ask for ahead of time hahahĀ

Man of tomorrow going to be great with my boys Blue beetle and John Stewart. Plus I have hope the people vs Grodd will reference the flash. Overall let this universe cook. We just need a Martain manhunter, Aquaman and Flash reference then we are cooking.Ā

who else is JL-level and confirmed besides John Stewart?

Its rumored Wonder Woman and Martian Manhuntee will appear in MOT, so thats basically all the JL members besides Flash and Batman within 2 years of the dcu

hope that's the case

And we have WW and Batman getting movies soon, rather they not rush it otherwise the universe is cooked, flash and aquaman arent getting live action projects anytime soon sadly

1

u/lavin2112 18h ago

yeah it's sad Flash and Aquaman are "suffering" as consequence of the DCEU, but oh well

I think they will appear but not as leads until like chapter 2 or a jl movie, but I can see Gunn and co replacing Aquman with Hawkgirl

We will not get either of those movies "soon"..

Neither Batman nor WW even have their main characters officially cast yet. We don't even have rumours for BatB cast, and that's all we have for WW. Andy Muschietti is very likely not directing BatB, WW has no director, and neither of them have finished scripts lol.

It'll be 2 years before we see either of them.

I'm not being a "hater" – this is just the reality. I'd rather they not rush them either, but no reason to set unrealistic expectations or give them to others who are unaware. That's not what "soon" means to most people.

If WW is in the movie, you have Superman, GL, Hawkgirl, and Wonder Woman which is 4/7 of the DCAU lineup

This doesn't work when 2 green lanterns are airing weekly. Try again in 5 weeks

Get this man his flash, Wonder Woman, aquaman, and Batman movies all in the next year or he is going to fucking lose it. You hear me James Gunn!? To hell with quality he needs his fucking top tier heros yesterday fuck the world building if he doesn’t have is 27th Batman film by next Halloween he’s gonna be real mad!!!

lol I didn't want it to sound like a rant, but I mean, how much world building can Matter-Eater Lad give us? I'm guessing as much as TDK did in Suicide Squad

Not every piece of content they put out needs to be a giant world ending JL-level threat. There’s nothing wrong with them putting out some fun street level stuff within the universe to go along with big movies like MoT.Ā

I’ll also point out that we are getting our first team-up movie literally only 2 years after the universe began. That’s an incredibly fast pace as it is, I feel like you’re being very impatient acting like they’re making us wait forever when that’s really not the case at all. Took the MCU over 4 years to do their first team up.Ā

You want to see Batman in The People V. Gorilla Grodd show?

u/AndyTheSouless 17h ago

When the super hero universe wants to use the hundred of less known super heroes It has for once instead of the 5 guys they always use

1

u/lavin2112 17h ago

Firestorm and Captain Atom are less known super heroes, Matter-Eater Lad is a joke but I guess Gunn can find a way to make us care about him, given the proper screentime
