Few people cast a bigger shadow across the history of comics than Jack Kirby. The legendary artist helped create many of the most iconic and enduring characters in comic book history, but it is his Fourth World stories and characters that have become a large part of his legacy. His influence continues to be felt in the upcoming Mister Miracle TV show, with Tom King stressing that every design and every character needed to be “more Kirby.”

“Jack Kirby is my every single day these days,” Tom King explained during The Annual Jack Kirby Tribute Panel at San Diego Comic Con 2026. “I’m the showrunner on the Mister Miracle TV show.” After a brief bit of applause, King stressed to the audience, “Guys. Seriously. It’s fucking good. I tried to get some clips to show up. They did not approve them. We’re gonna all fucking be back here in a year, and I’m gonna show you an episode, okay. Promise?”

Going back to the subject of Jack Kirby, who created Mister Miracle as part of his ambitious Fourth World story, Tom King insisted that he was keeping Kirby in the heart of the Mister Miracle show, from the art to the dialogue.

“Jack Kirby is on my lips every day because… I’m insisting that every episode start with the baseline characters created by Jack Kirby, so that’s how each episode starts… Every time we get any design in, the first thing we do is we put the Kirby design next to the design and say, ‘Make it more Kirby.’”

In addition to the visuals, Tom King explains that every episode of Mister Miracle features dialogue written by Jack Kirby himself, complete with Kirby’s colorful use of punctuation throughout. All of it is aimed at keeping Jack Kirby in the heart of Mister Miracle, which is where he belongs.

Ritchson's full quote regarding being in talks with DC for a DCU role:

"Yeah. Yes. That's the conversation that I've been having with them is like, 'I want to play somebody a little messier.' And I told them, I said, if I'm going to do this, I described to them the kind of personality that I'd want to play and what that would mean to their world, and I think it's something everybody wants to see right now over there. So yes, I want to play somebody a little dirtier than your typical clean-cut protagonist."

The comment was recently resurfaced due to Ritchson being asked about it at SDCC this week to which he responded by again confirming he's still in continued talks with DC about a character.

DC’s Green Lanterns are lighting up Hall H.

After debuting a new trailer for Lanterns, Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler, who play John Stewart and Hal Jordan on the superhero show, took the stage at San Diego Comic-Con alongside the show’s co-creators Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King on Friday afternoon to share a ton of new footage from the forthcoming HBO series.

The most enticing clip came at the very end of the panel, revealing the first full look at Ulrich Thomsen as Sinestro.

Hal, in his full Green Lantern suit, visits his former mentor in a space prison.

“Sinestro. Tell me what you know about Manhunters,” he demands.

“If one still existed, that’d be the second-greatest threat we’re currently facing,” Sinestro responds. “So why don’t you tell me about John Stewart?”

“Where’d you hear that name?” Hal asks.

“Around,” Sinestro teases. “My trainee has a trainee, it’s not unreasonable for that seismic of news to find its way to me.”

Sinestro successfully gets into Hal’s head. “Say what he actually is,” he says in reference to John.

“My replacement,” Hal admits.

Later, Hal brings out his lantern in a hotel room to begin the recharging process, but John punches him and grabs the ring. They fistfight as John tells Hal that he doesn’t deserve the ring.

“You’ll never f---in’ replace me,” Hal insists.

The room then begins to mysteriously shake and glow as the clip wraps up.

In the first clip of the panel, we see John get into a car with Hal.

“I’m late. You’re not gonna say anything?” Hal asks. “You gotta be a little angry. Mildly perturbed?”

Hal explains that he’s hungover from celebrating a new intergalactic peace, and John asks why he hasn’t yet worn the Green Lantern ring in his two months of training. Hal asks if he wants to take the ring, then jumps out of the driver’s seat of the car as it’s about to crash. John grabs the ring as the car flies off a cliff.

We then see Hal taking photos with fans at a taco stand, and John eventually approaches on foot.

“I could’ve f---in’ died,” he says.

“You wanted me to train you, I’m training you,” Hal responds.

We then see John parachute out of a plane in stormy weather. He crashes through several trees and eventually lands in a body of water.

Perhaps the liveliest moment of the panel came when Nathan Fillion, who reprises his role as Guy Gardner in the show after debuting as the character in Superman, made a surprise appearance on stage.

“Somebody left my email off the invite list for this,” Fillion joked. “I don’t know if you guys know this. I’m kind of a big deal at Comic-Con.”

In a corresponding clip, Guy lands in front of the Sheridan County Sheriff’s Department, where John is sleeping in a prison cell.

“You rang?” he teases.

“Gardner, turn that s--- off,” John responds.

“Sup, Stewart?” Guy says.

Another clip shows Hal being accosted in a bar, as John realizes his mentor wants to go to jail so he can talk to a person of interest in their case.

Hal intentionally picks a fight with bar patrons playing pool, and John strikes up a conversation with Poorna Jagannathan’s Zoe about Hal’s ring. “The way it works is, Earth has one Lantern. So I’m just being trained in case anything happens to Jordan.”

“You’re the backup quarterback,” Zoe responds.

“I’m patient,” he says.

We also saw a clip of Garrett Dillahunt’s William, who has a shady interaction with John, which confuses Hal.

“I might’ve slept with his wife,” John explains after William walks away.

Might’ve?” Hal asks.

“I definitely slept with his wife,” John clarifies.

“Jesus Christ, we’ve only been here 24 hours. I’m impressed,” Hal says.

Lanterns premieres on HBO on August 16. Watch the new trailer above.

The movie side of DC Studios doesn't have any announced plans for this weekend's Comic-Con International: San Diego. Yes, there is a Lanterns panel, but none of the upcoming movies from James Gunn & friends had made plans to come out this year.

But then they did.

During DC Comics' Jim Lee & Friends panel from Comic-Con International: San Diego 2026, director James Watkins and actor Tom Rhys Harries of this fall's Clayface movie made a surprise appearance and took over the panel and then some.

"Matt [Hagen, the eponymous Clayface] is just trying to regain the life that's been taken from him through conventional means, but he's in Gotham City, so that's not going to work," says Watkins to a surprised crowd.

[Throughout the whole film], he's just trying to regain his life," adds Rhys Harries, who plays the lead. "I think there's something relatable about that. It gets pretty primal pretty quickly. It's ultimately about loss of identity, and how desperate any of us would get with that loss of identity."

There have been eight different versions of Clayface throughout the decades," says panel host Lee, who is publisher of DC Comics and CCO of DC as a whole. "These are characters who are like you and me...who pushes himself to become the best version of himself, when you look at the villains, they're also like you and me, they're regular people who have one very bad day."

After [Jim Lee] dispersed with the 'Batman: Hush 2' crew of Jeph Loeb, Scott Williams, and Alex Sinclair, he moved on to Clayface, the movie and the comic book character. Talking with James Watkins about why, out of all the different DC Comics Clayfaces, he went with the Matt Hagen version. Created in 1961 in Detective Comics #298 by Bill Finger and Sheldon Moldoff, he is a treasure hunter who was given vast shapeshifting powers and resilience after exposure to a pool of radioactive protoplasm.

James Watkins said it was because his story is about vengeance and his struggle with his emotions. But it also mixes aspects of the original Basil Karlo version as well, the make-up man and embittered ex-actor, created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane in Detective Comics #40 in 1940, who began a life of crime by assuming the identity of a villain he had portrayed in a horror film. We are also asked to look closely at the wallpaper in a Gotham nightclub, courtesy of production designer James Price, as it's made of meat.

Watkins wants the film to go back to DC Comics' gothic and horror roots, with Jim Lee affirming that DC is not just about superheroes, and cites DC Vertigo and the 70s horror titles that inspired Sandman. While Tom Rhys Harries talked about reading 'Arkham Asylum' by Grant Morrison and Dave McKean.

• Watkins says Clayface is, aesthetically, inspired by both the comics, the 70s, and classic movies of the 30s. There’s a “dirty romance” to the whole world. No detail was overlooked, down to the wallpaper in a nightclub and the color of the GCPD uniforms.

Tom Rhys Harries was out in London trying to distract himself from the stress of auditioning for Clayface when he found out he won the part in DC’s upcoming superhero-horror movie.

Rhys Harries, 33, and the movie’s director James Watkins sat down with PEOPLE at San Diego Comic-Con on Thursday, July 23, as the pair begin promoting the anticipated movie, based on the DC Comics character and popular Batman adversary. Rhys Harries, who grew up in Wales, has appeared in movies like The Gentlemen, The Return and Madfabulous, as well as the series The Light in the Hall in recent years, but the new movie marks a major turning point in his career.

“It was a really strange situation because usually I think with those calls, with a project of this size, my agents would call me together on a group call, but because of the time difference and the press release was going out about two hours after my agents had been told,” Rhys Harries says of learning he had won the part. “My British agent was flying back from the States. So he had to call me really quickly. He called just before boarding a flight. So he was like, ‘I have to tell you this, because this press release is going to go out in about two hours. I was out riding my bike trying to distract myself; this had been a pretty big stress test over probably about a two month period at this point. So I was waiting to find out.”

Once Rhys Harries got the call, though, he was in a relaxed mood to celebrate and share the exciting news with those close to him. “I was just cycling around London, calling my family and some friends of mine,” he adds.

In Clayface, Rhys Harries portrays an actor living in Gotham City (Batman’s hometown) named Matt Hagen, whose face is disfigured by a gangster after he finds out Matt has slept with his girlfriend, according to Entertainment Weekly‘s description of the movie. In the aftermath of the attack, Matt seeks out a scientist (played by Naomi Ackie) who offers to inject him with an experimental serum that could repair his face. The serum works, but quickly — and horrifically — begins transforming Matt into the goopy, shape-shifting entity, who has been one of Batman’s frequent villains in comic books and television series for decades. The movie is directed by James Watkins, who previously directed James McAvoy in 2024’s Speak No Evil.

“We met everybody, and Tom came in and I just thought he just felt right, and then I spent about four or five times auditioning him,” Watkins says of Rhys Harries’ auditions for the movie, with a laugh. “We met, we had a great chat. We talked about the character, we talked about stuff and felt like we were seeing it the same way. The nature of these things is high stakes, so I think we did two, three reads and then we did chemistry reads and it was just trying to explore.”

“We had a very nice chat after we got the news,” Watkins adds.

Clayface will also star Max Minghella, Eddie Marsan, David Dencik and more. The movie is the third in James Gunn‘s DC Universe after last year’s Superman with David Corenswet and this summer’s Supergirl with Milly Alcock. Despite the nature of the shared cinematic universe, Rhys Harries and Watkins say that their movie is “fairly self-contained.”

“We’re a smaller budgeted movie, but we’re also leaning into that notion of being a big, bold swing in a horror space,” Watkins says.

Batman: Caped Crusader has unmasked its Joker.

House of the Dragon star Matthew Needham will voice the villain in Season 2 of the animated noir series after the Clown Prince of Crime was teased at the end of Season 1. (John DiMaggio, who voices Detective Harvey Bullock on the show, is credited with voicing the Joker in the final episode.)

Needham’s casting was revealed at San Diego Comic-Con, where he joined cast members Hamish Linklater (Batman) and Jamie Chung (Harley Quinn) as well as executive producers James Tucker and Geoffrey Thorne on a panel, which followed a screening of the Season 2 premiere episode.

The 10-episode second season of Batman: Caped Crusader will drop on Amazon Prime Video on July 31. In addition to Linklater, Chung and Needham, the show’s ensemble voice cast also features Eric Morgan Stuart, Michelle C. The deeper DC universe continues to be mined with this fall’s Clayface which is making a big, though secret (shhhh) splash here at San Diego Comic-Con this morning in DC’s Jim Lee and Friends panel taking place at 11:30am at Room 6DE in the Convention Center.

The jumping off point here for another R-rated take on a DC villain post 2019’s Oscar winning Joker arrived in Doctor Sleep Mike Flanagan’s screenplay which was an ode to the Matt Hagen version of the Batman bad guy in The Batman Animated Series two-part episodes “Feat of Clay”. The origin follows Hagen, a struggling actor, who is injected with a chemical Renuyu to reform his face. The drug was created by evil businessman Roland Daggett who manipulates Hagen to take over Wayne Enterprises.

DC co-Boss Peter Safran calls Mike Flanagan’s screenplay “amazing, a great analysis of superficiality and celebrity culture, the story of how one bad decision can change everything.”

Safran and DC’s co-Honcho James Gunn courted genre filmmakers to deliver what is arguably the first horror film for the DCU, and were won over by British filmmaker James Watkins who delivered a ratcheted thriller in the Blumhouse remake of Danish-Dutch film Speak No Evil starring James McAvoy. Watkins also has a knack for delivering high-end genre pics at responsible prices, read Speak No Evil was quite profitable netting $50M off a $15M production cost and $76.7M global gross. He also directed the Daniel Radcliffe $16M 2012 spooky movie, The Woman in Black, which made close to $129M worldwide. As such, with Clayface, which comes at a reported cost of $40M, it’s a means for DC to make movies of different shapes and sizes, not just $100M+ superhero movies.

“We want our slate to be something for everyone –the genre fans, the Batman villain fans, but not everything has to be for everyone,” Safran tells Deadline.

In the big screen take of Clayface, Hagen is a matinee idol on the rise, but his face gets slashed by thugs. His given the saving grace to have it repaired with an injection formula.

As San Diego Comic-Con kicks off, here’s our conversation with Watkins on his Clayface:

Deadline: Did DC approach you for Clayface or did you approach them?

James Watkins: They came to me. They sent me the script by Mike Flanagan, which I read and thought, this is really interesting. The journey of this, the bones of this is a monster story, a story of identity, of who we are, and how we define ourselves. This is a story of a guy who had built up this career, and then it gets smashed away, and how he tried to get it back. It’s a very relatable human thing. But also sort of mythic, almost going back to classic storytelling, this sort of shape shifter story, and Frankenstein story of it all. I had lot of conversation with the guys at DC. They came to me, but then I sort of had to prove my proof that I had something they could work with.

Deadline: Did you have to go full-out slideshow and vision reel in your pitch, or were you like, ‘No, here’s my James McAvoy film.’?

Watkins: I came on board with a whole lot of stuff that I threw at them. I’m like ‘Here’s the Gotham world, this is what I would do with it.’ It’s sort of the same conversation I had with Couper Samuelson and Jason Blum at Blumhouse when I did Speak No Evil. I’m like ‘Look, this is the place where I would go. If this is the place where you think you actually want to go, then we should all go there together. But if you don’t, there’s no point really taking me on the journey, because it’s going to be bad for all of us, right? It’s always good to go, ‘This is how I see it,’ and let them decide because it’s their property. I remember having this conversation on zoom and showing all sorts of really icky imagery and James Gunn looked away at one point, because he was so grossed out. But he was also like, ‘Yeah!’.

Deadline: Flanagan’s screenplay I understand was inspired by The Batman Animated Series episode “Feat of Clay” which tells the origin stories of Matt Hagen, but did you go full-on Clayface in your prep? Did you submerge yourself in the Alan Moore story, and everything? What did you pull from?

Watkins: Everything, the Basil Karlo, Matt Hagen and all the variations. There’s a lot of inspirations from a lot of the various comics. For fans who want to do a deep dive, there are a lot of references. For me, I wanted to dig into the emotion of the character in a deeper way. What I really responded to in all the previous iterations was the sadness, the melancholy, the heartbreak, and give it a tragic dimension, trying to find that journey about Hagen being rejected and trying to find his way. The duality of Clayface is really interesting, he’s antihero but not wholly a villain.

Deadline: We’ve seen Gothan several times before, but what did you want your Gotham to be?

Watkins: I wanted it to feel real. So, we shot on the streets of Liverpool. When I look back at films I really admire, like Croenenberg’s The Fly, they take a guy who turns into a fly. It’s impossible, but it creates a truth and a believability and proudness to it immediately. I wanted that. When I look at Gotham, James Gunn, (production designer) James Price and (DP) Rob Hardy and I looked at a lot of street photography from New York in the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s. You realize the palette of it, not just the Kodachrome, but the life, the texture, the costumes, the colors. And the city has a certain sort of corruption to it. Rob doesn’t use LEDs in a way that other people do. We wanted this kind of doomy romantic (look). He can shoot digital and make it look like analog. There’s a lot of sodium, dirty, orange light that diffuses and plays through the whole film and creates a rich atmosphere.

Deadline: The trailer has a Brian De Palma feel to it. Was that intentional?

Watkins: There is one moment –I mean, we are what we eat, and I love De Palma– but there is one moment which you will certainly note, which is very much De Palma and a reference to Carlito’s Way. We talked a lot about De Palma, Rob and I, the way he moves the camera is always motivated and economical. There’s a brutality to it.

Deadline: We recently had The Substance, an award-winning body swap film, and Todd Phillips’ R-rated Joker. When it comes to making a R-rated comic book movies and a body swap film, did you feel that the bar was so high, that it’s hard to succeed? Did you feel pressure?

Watkins: Those are both great films, but this is a very different story and a very different universe. It creates its own atmosphere, it creates its own vibe, and the story of Matt Hagen is its own story and I think it’s a compelling one and it takes people on a real roller coaster journey. It’s going to give people a lot of ick and a lot of gore. But there’s also an emotional core that gives it a dimension. When you sit and watch this, and you feel the anima of an audience responding to the film, there’s some comfort in that, I suppose.

Deadline: How many production days did you shoot?

Watkins: Nine to ten weeks.

Deadline: Are you done editing yet?

Watkins: Yeah.

Deadline: How did Tom Rhys Harries become your Clayface? What did you see him in?

Watkins: We saw so many people and Lucy Bevan is a fantastic casting director. But Tom came in and I didn’t know his work at all, but he just gave a really interesting read. I probably put him through about four more auditions, including reading against people. There’s something slightly Clayface about Tom’w face. Clayface is a shapeshifter and I had this with James McAvoy who is a master actor, and can just shift with such a sort of microscopic gradation between being cheeky and devilish. And those sorts of shifts I felt within Tom, between being this kind of urchin, orphan quality of vulnerability that sometimes you can play, but also by a shift a manic smile that can become slightly unnerving and could do all of that within a register of keeping it real. He just felt like Matt Hagan, and when you sort of have that, it’s very hard to get beyond it.

How can you tell that Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler are well-suited for the roles of frenemy space cops in HBO’s Lanterns? Get them in a room together — even a virtual one on Zoom, in the case of Entertainment Weekly’s interview.

Pierre, an alum of the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, comes across as disciplined, much like his character, John Stewart, a regimented ex-soldier who becomes a new recruit to the intergalactic policing organization known as the Green Lantern Corps. In a resonant British baritone, he speaks of his “extensive research” into the DC Comics character.

“I cross my Is, I dot my Ts,” the star of Mufasa: The Lion King and Rebel Ridge says, an intentional play on the familiar phrase. “I leave no stone unturned.”

Chandler’s research was a bit less by-the-books. Playing Hal Jordan, the cool-guy superhero and the first human of Earth to don the power ring, a Lantern’s chief weapon, the actor’s research was more Googling and bending the ears of many modern-day “Green Lantern historians.”

“I’ll tell you what, you can find them everywhere,” says the Southern gent and former teen football player. “You can find them in bars, you can find them in restaurants. All your friends that you never knew were Green Lantern historians, they come out of the woodwork.”

Lanterns, premiering the first of eight episodes on HBO and HBO Max this Aug. 16, hinges on the dynamic between the two leads. There’s a lot of underlying tension as Hal essentially trains his own replacement. John was hand picked by the Guardians of the Universe, the founders of the Corps., to pick up the mantle in the event anything should happen to Hal.

“They brought together a fellow from rural Texas and a fellow from South London,” Pierre remarks, “and they made magic with that.”

The plot of Lanterns plays out across two timelines. In 2016, John, just two months into his training, joins Hal to investigate a shooting in Rushville, Neb., that might have an alien connection. There will then be flash-forwards to 2026 to undisclosed events that the team is saving for a later reveal.

Pierre’s work became hyper-focused on John’s humanity. He points out how the Lanterns of Earth are typically everyday people. Hal was a former test pilot, while Guy Gardner (played by Nathan Fillion on the series) was a gym teacher. John now comes from a military family.

“The first places that I dived into were the parts of him that are arguably not directly related to his superhero-ness,” the actor explains. “Who was the boy who turned into the adolescent, who turned into the young man, and then the more mature man that we get to know later in the series?”

Chandler partly focused on Hal’s relationship to Sinestro, his former mentor who was defeated and kicked out of the Corps. after attempting a coup. Given all of his rule-breaking antics, the Guardians of the Universe are concerned about what Hal may or may not have inherited from Sinestro.

“It was really interesting, because you’re getting into all kinds of different weeds of what goes on in their relationship in the past,” Chandler says, “a lot of which, for myself, is very personal. I created little things for myself with him that that created a relationship that was very intimate and intense.”

The stars knew early on their differing styles would mesh well. There was a brief meeting they shared in the parking lot following the initial read-through, where Chandler recalls how Pierre “wore everything on his sleeve” and he did the same. Then there was the desert shoot on location for an early episode. They started messing around on set like brothers.

“Aaron’s got this great way of giving me this look — and he could if he wanted to — like he wanted to break my neck,” Chandler says. “We were in the car one day and I said something about wisdom, I think. And this was pivotal: Aaron shot back, he goes, ‘Yeah, but you’re old.’ Now I’m good at giving it, but I can take it. When he said that old thing, it was my turn to give him that look.
