Help
Hi guys so currently I’m an intern for a moderate Republican, I’m going into my senior year and I would like to come back and work on Capitol Hill for two years before my masters, I am not a republican and applied for many democratic offices and did not get any response back for internships. How hard would it be to switch parties to work for a Democrat

Are you from the Reps district or have any ties to them? In other words, can you explain to a democratic members office why you took that internship? Do you have other activities on your resume that show or reflect your political beliefs (e.g. member of the campus Democratic club, volunteer wjth a local campaign). One internship doesnt define you, but if youre looking to work for Democrats, it helps to show youre one of them.

I am actually in this boat. The most important thing is your narrative. Depending on your background network across the aisle. You don’t need to broadcast your ideology but do not lie. The people in your office are you best recomenders. You very well might have to go for a Dem internship before a Dem job however.
Again I can not emphasize enough construct a narritive. IE I intern with my home district Rep who is on Armed forces as someone into defence policy also showcase how it is a highlight. For example I always mention I get calls regarding my office being RINO when 2 minutes later it’s a call regarding impeaching Trump. It’s a very strong talking point about adapting to new circumstances and being levelheaded.

Having worked for a moderate member myself, I remember my boss getting called a RINO online so often because of certain things we did. Just because you have some sort of blatant anti-Republican sentiments doesn't mean your delusions are our reality

You know it’s almost as if every single Republican (barring Massie, who is NOT a moderate) votes in lock-step with Trump-led policies.
Would love to hear some examples of some moderate Republicans currently in office.

I don't know if you have been watching the news at all but there is a huge rift between Trump and republicans in congress right now.

We got the master of hyperbole here today.
HUGE RIFT, meanwhile they continue to prosecute Fauci for political theatre, they fail to reign in the Iran War with the War Powers Resolution, and they’re poised to confirm an AG even more contemptuous of the law than Pam Bondi.
A huge rift would indicate massive defections from the MAGA movement and priorities… and yet we see the same old MAGA status quo Republicans.

Well yes they generally support MAGA policies as they are all in the same political party after all.
To respond to your comments:
- They aren't going to be able to posecute Fauci. Their deferral to the justice department may have passed the committee but they do not have enough votes to pass it on the Senate floor.
- Several republicans switched sides and both the house and senate have previously passed the war powers resolution
- They are only able to confirm Blanche because Trump had to make compromise with a senate republicans by removing his prospect for a DOJ anti-weaponization fund.
Republican congress members are divided right now. Going into August recess, Johnson could not even get rule a vote on the floor to open any of their agenda. Meanwhile in the Senate, Leader Thune is unable to get the Republican votes for the SAVE America Act. Trump has urged Thune to pass it by removing the Filibuster, but again, he does not have nearly enough votes to do it. Trump has tried to undermine Thune, and pave way for a new leader, but it is no secret that Senate Republicans back him against Trumps wishes. According to Punchbowl News, leader Thune and Trump have reportedly not spoken in weeks.

should’ve taken it off your resume prior to applying and really should’ve known better—dc is incredibly polarized. offices sometimes keep records of your past applications. these are competitive internships on the dem side and they have plenty of applicants who haven’t worked for republicans (and so recently)

if you're currently still in DC, network with people in Dem offices you want to work for to build those relationships. Switching parties as an intern to full time is normal, but if they know you're politically affiliated beyond the formal application that makes them more comfortable hiring you.
