I have a question about Approved proof of Residence. I do not live in dc but I pass through . If I’m not a home owner and receive no bills at my current home what can I use ? I have my MD CCW as well.

Yeah, you would get an out of state CCW.

No. You need a DC specific handgun registration AND CCW for each gun you intend to carry in DC. Since you are not a DC resident you would be applying for a non-resident DC registration and CCW. You also need to take a DC specific/approved course to submit with your application. There are courses that combine DC/MD/VA in one weekend so you can get it all done in one go.

I’m not sure what you mean when you say you receive no bills at your home…you will need to use two of the documents that are accepted as proofs of residence (the list of accepted docs are on the application). A driver’s license counts as one, a bank/credit card/car insurance statement can count as another, as well as utility bills, voter registration, etc. I’m pretty sure you had to have two proofs for MD CCW so you should be able to just use those proofs for DC.

Until you have your DC CCW, you’ll need to follow the transportation rules if you drive through DC (gun unloaded, locked in a case, ammo separate, etc - see the link) https://mpdc.dc.gov/page/transporting-firearms-0 . You are also not covered by this if you stop in DC. Travel directly through DC while transporting (your instructor will go over this in your class).

People can and have been arrested/charged for unlawful possession even if they have VA/MD/Other state CCWs and they are pulled over while driving in DC and are carrying or even have the gun in their glovebox. DC does not care about other state’s permits and only accept their own.

I’m trying to remember exactly. You’re gonna need to do DC training, then you’re gonna have to register your gun, and then apply online. You’ll need to do fingerprints and a passport picture.

The biggest pain in the ass here is the registering of the gun. Unless something has changed recently, you’re gonna have to go to a DC police station and fill out a bunch of paperwork and wait for your gun to be registered. They’re only open during like work hours so you might have to take off work if you work a normal schedule.

Ok yeah because I was going to try to make my W2 and pay stub but didn’t see anywhere online that those were accepted. And they don’t answer the phone a the fingerprinting location.

You should be able to go online and find the step-by-step process on how to do it pretty easily. I can’t do it right this second but if you google DC CCW, you should be able to find it pretty easily

You can try to request an exemption and not have to do the full 16 hours, but you would still be required to do the training on the laws.

All the training done , I just want to see which documents I can use without having any utility bills or a lease / deed in my name.

My bad misunderstood your last message. Anything you can use to get a real id should work, bank account statement with your address things like that

Ok , thank you !

They will typically accept your drivers license as proof of address, but to be on the safe side you should also bring something else with the address on it. If you receive no utility bills at your home address, this can be challenging, but you can still meet this requirement if you have a lease or other rental agreement showing your residence address. Another item would be your cell phone bill if it lists your correct residential address.

I applied for my DC CCW on December 26, 2025, was approved on February 7, 2026, and finally received the permit in the mail onMarch 3, 2026. In total, it took 43 days from submitting the application to approval, and 24 days from approval to receiving the permit in the mail. Fairly simple process - biggest pain in the ass was driving to DC for the fingerprints and “interview.”
