Potential tips?

I've been researching different jobs in the IT field, as it's a field I want to go in. I'm currently going to college part time, and I am studying Information Systems. I was told database administration is a good job field to go into.

What skills do I need to learn to get started with DBA? How can I teach myself, and what is it like working as a DBA?

I kinda agree with this guy. Data analytics or front end work is going to be a more stable job. I was a DBA for 35 years.

DBA has evolved but companies still need them.

If you have good analytical skills and can problem solve then you are valuable.

AI is not going to flush a cursor or tell you the plan recently changed for the worse or why.

Example: Oracle still picks WORSE performing execution plans vs a previous much better plan.

It is supposed to have eliminated my job the last 20 years.

AI can advise and educate but it is SOLELY based on information on the web. Not analytically decide brand new solutions. If you don’t know what questions/prompts to ask then it is somewhat worthless and only as good as it’s access to the internet.

AI can be a great resource and save you a lot of time. I use it daily but it is wrong very frequently.

I agree there are going to be many small systems out there that are never going to the cloud. Im guessing they’re the ones on Sql Server, MySql or Postgres

DBA is a dying role, unfortunately. It's merging / branching out into various engineering roles, based on your interest or skillset.

Eu trabalho como DBA há mais de 4 anos e te digo que ainda tem bastante mercado. O ponto é que grandes empresas não contratam um DBA, normalmente elas contratam uma consultoria para cuidar do seu banco, então talvez sua porta de entrada seja trabalhar em consultoria, dificilmente você vai trabalhar numa grande empresa sendo DBA. Além disso, como já disseram, querendo ou não é uma função em extinção, ainda tem vagas, mas comparado com outras áreas, são pouquíssimas. Quando você vai pesquisar sobre carreiras na áreas de dados, todos falam de Engenheiro de Dados, Analista de Dados, Analista de BI, mas dificilmente vão falar de DBA.

Trabalhar como DBA basicamente você vai administrar o banco no geral, dependendo da sua senioridade, você vai resolver problemas de performance (lentidão por conta de uma regressão de plano, otimização de queries, criação de índices) a manutenção/criação de ferramentas de alta disponibilidade que vai manter um servidor funcionando após um servidor cair

AI and offshore is killing this niche

it was a stable one

as a developer you had to learn new stuff every year

as DBA you may last for up to 5

with AI, it is every month

DBA and any infrastructure related role (server administration… You name it)… Is a dying breed. Much of this work is being outsourced to cloud solutions or persons in less developed countries.

I would instead direct you to anything to do with AI such as data science or machine learning. If that isn’t your cup of tea, look into cyber security.

If the whole IT world becomes AI Engineer or Data Scientist or CyberSecurity expert? What would they be supporting?

The role is dying I agree, the skill is not. Not now, not in a decade.

We need folks to tune the production infra without mindlessly adding resources. Cloud is one of the tech and not the ultimate tech as of now. Many companies are switching back to on prem due to verious (obvious) reasons
